"A Solid Choice"
Pros: Amazing Picture for HDTV programs and DVDs; Great Connectivity; Solid Feature Set
Cons: Bulb will need to be replaced in a few years; Cost
Summary: I bought this television about 1 month ago at Best Buy for around $3000, which was the market price at reputable dealers. Overall, I was pleased with the experience, but did have some frustrations with Best Buy's delivery service. Impossible to get in touch with the right people, and in general, not helpful when you do.
That aside, this television is simply amazing. As my first HDTV purchase, I couldn't be happier. Set up was a breeze, including the optional stand, and the picture has been amazing. While much of the television I initially watched was standard programming delivered via satellite, I found the picture to be bright and clear, despite some people's complaints about standard television programming. DVDs are incredible to watch on this beautiful TV, and now that I've connected the television to a terrestial antenna (a corner Yagi setup with pre-amp in my attic), I'm getting a whole host of HDTV and DTV stations over the air for free. The picture for HDTV programming is incredible. Now I can watch my lowly Jets with a crystal clear picture that is almost as good as being there (except I don't have to struggle with traffic there and back only to watch them lose).
Connectivity, a huge requirement of mine, is awesome. The Digital Audio (Optical) out is a huge plus, since I have a external AV receiver. The 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound for the OTA HDTV broadcasts is such a bonus, and the TV's tuner handles it perfectly. With the DVI inputs, multiple Component Video inputs, firewire connections, and the integrated cable card, I know that I'll be able to add components to my heart's content for many years to come.
I can strongly recommend this TV. Right out the box, the color calibration was nearly perfect, and we were watching great TV in a matter of minutes. While you might find the 780p resolution a downside, so few programs are offered in 1080i format now, you aren't missing much. Plus, the picture is so close to perfect as it is now, I don't view the extra cost as worthwhile. Do yourself a favor when shopping for a TV, and give this Samsung a serious look.
