    "Perfect entry level DLP."

by darrenohooligan on March 1, 2007

    Pros: Size, picture. price. weight

    Cons: viewing angle

Summary: i purchased this DLP after my gorgeous 36" panasonic Tau tube went out. I had my mind set on a DLP over an LCD or Plasma set. We have a decent size living room, and I wasnt sure if a 46" set would work. Well let me tell you this set is close to perfect In both picture and size. First off it weighs nothing compared to the 275lb panasonic. (46lbs roughly) Second, setup was VERY easy. One thing i like is the TV recognizes inputs and they are automatically switched even if you unplug one and add another. The connections are not directly in back, they off to the right side, so plugging cords in and out is a snap. Especially if you're waiting for my HDMI cables to be delivered as I am. There are 2 HDMI hookup, and 2 component hookups. there are some s-video and standard hookups as well. The picture on this thing is amazing. HD looks brilliant, and sports on this thing are REDICULOUS. I don't even like basketball, and have 4 games this past week i've had the set. Even standard def TV looks good. Granted it's not spectacular, but very very tolerable. To the point where I'm not even bothered by the picture. Some things I read about this TV said that SD TV look bad. I would'nt say bad at all. I would go so far as to say decent when it comes to SD broadcasting. So far the only time I've seen the "screen door" effect was on my DVR'd shows. Blue seems to bring out the effect pretty bad. You have to look for it, and honestly it wasn't all that annoying. I haven't noticed the rainbow effect like most talk about on this set. I'm not a gamer, nor do i intend to be so I can't comment on that. DVDs look amazing. Cars is a great movie to watch for the colors on all the cars. The reds are red, yellows are really yellow and neither bleed which is a common. I used my video essentials disc to tune the DVD input so that helped. The dynamic setting is way too bright for most viewing, but if you want to light up a dark room, use it. There are many ways to fine tune the picture and you get plenty of options to do it. The screen is plastic and not glass like an LCD or plasma. This is great when you have a 2 year old running around. The only downfall that I've seen so far is viewing angle. At extreme angles it gets dark and hard to see. Comapred to an LCD which has almost a 180 degree angle. This is only bothersome when i want to watch TV while cooking dinner. I would highly recommend a monster HTS power center for this TV. The bulbs in DLPs are very sensitive to power surges, and buying one will protect your TV. Service plans are also highy recommended as the bulbs do burn out, but the SPs cover bulbs. This TV is perfect for someone who wants to enter the realm of HD, but doesn't want to dig too deep into their pockets. This set looks as good as most LCDs and Plasmas. If you enjoy watching DVDs and TV you should really look at this TV. The price, the picture, the weight, ease of use make this set close to perfect.
