"Disappointed with faulty television"
Pros: Easy set-up, beautiful picture, looks great
Cons: Picture freezes every 20 minutes, only way to unfreeze is to unplug television
Summary: Bought this Samsung model from Best Buy for a reasonable $1500. Set up was faily easy, and I was watching beautiful high-def TV in no time. However, after about 30 minutes of viewing, the picture freezes, though audio continues. Can't access menu or even turn TV off. Only way to unfreeze is to unplug. Same thing happens no matter the video source, be it component from DVR Cable box or straight from DVD via regular video and audio cables. Am returning to Best Buy, who won't have a replacement for days. Bad start. Will update when I get a replacement TV.Updated
After talking with Samsung support, who recommended returning the product after saying that they had never heard of my problems before, exchanged TV for same model at Best Buy. The new HL-S5086W seems very good, so far. No freeze up, and the picture is very good right out of the box, with no professional setup. I must admit that I'm worried about long-term reliability, but I would up my rating of this product to a seven after a week in my living room. It looks great and has plenty of inputs. Now I will cross my fingers that this set doesn't freeze up like the last one.
Updated on Nov 16, 2009After owning the set for about four months, it looked like the TV had pixels that were frozen bright white. Just a couple of pixels, but it was annoying. Called support, who set up service (under warranty). They replaced the color wheel, which seemed to fix the problem. After all the initial problems, I will say this has been a reliable TV that I've owned for three years now, and I've had no further problems. I'm glad I bought it, even though the first few months gave me some real problems. Even the lamp has lasted this long for a TV that is on nearly 14 hours a day on average (wife and I have different schedules). Overall, this has been a fine TV that I hope lasts many years to come.
