    "Buyer Beware"

    by techgirl50 on October 10, 2006

    Pros: Great Picture, Good Value

Cons: Samsung Warranty & Customer Service

Summary: I researched and came up with this TV as my choice for my first High Definition purchase. The picture is (was) terrific. I purchased the HL-S5087W on July 3, 2006. On September 2, 2006, barely 2 months after purchase, I turned on the TV to watch a little Discovery HD and the set began making very loud "knocking" noises...so loud that I thought it was literally going to EXPLODE. I turned the set off and called Samsung, who seemed very nice and helpful (at the time). It was the weekend, but on Tuesday (after Labor Day Monday)a repair tech called me and set up an appt to come out that very evening. He turned on the TV and said that he had NEVER in his 20 years heard anything like it. He called Samsung and they had no idea what the issue was either. The repair tech left, came back two days later, replaced the ballast, and a couple of other parts, and determined that it was an "actuator" in the light engine. BTW...the color wheel also had a very large piece missing on one edge, which would have eventually caused the motor to fail. The tech determined that the set would need to have the entire light engine replaced. He ordered it, and it was on back order with NO date for shipment. At that point, it was determined that I would get a replacement. It was almost three weeks later to get to this point. It took another week to get the replacement approved. Needless to say, I STILL DON'T HAVE MY REPLACEMENT set, and today is October 10! I was told that it would take up to 3 weeks for a replacement...and that "we're sorry" it's our PROCESS. I could have taken a "trade" at Circuit City (which I was only offered when I bitterly complained), but they are only obligated to give you credit for what the TV is currently selling for, not what you paid, and if they don't have the same model, you need to pay the difference for something else. It looks like I might have my replacement by October 14, 2006 (maybe), but I'm really concerned that I'm getting the same model, based on other posts I've seen on the net. So...the lesson is...Samsung makes a great product (I think), but if you are one of the unlucky ones who has a problem, get ready to be challenged!

Thanks for the info.My old tv went out yesterday 12/23 (Merry Christmas to me)and I had decided on buying this tv based on a review by PC World.Fortunately I decided to look at reviews from consumers like you before I went out to buy this tv the day after Christmas. My pet peve is bad customer service. Some companies just don't care about you after they get your money and this seems to be one of them.So back to researching for another brand.

I purchased My Samsung HLS5087W on Nov 10th 2006. I was very excited because this was my first HDTV. My excitement soon turned to a feeling of despair. After having the television for 37 days I also noticed after turning it on one night, that it began making a horrible sound. I can only describe it as a loud buzzing/crackling sound. This sound apperared to be coming from the rear of the TV. I was in shock!! I ended up talking to the salesman that had sold me the TV the next day and told him what was happening with the TV. He told me that they would have to send out a technician to have a look at it. I told him that if he sent out a technician and the technician determined that it needed to be repaired, that I would not want him touching the TV but that I would bring it back to the store for either a refund or exchange.
After he spoke to his Samsung rep, he informed me that they would replace the TV.
I now have a new TV and am keeping my fingers crossed to see if this problem occurs again. I am otherwise very happy again with the TV provided this doesn't happen again. I think maybe Samsung is aware of some problem with this particular TV and that is the reason they agreed to exchange it without much fuss.

We will see what happens!! I am hoping I can keep my hopes up high for Samsung products. If this happens again I will never buy a Samsung product again.
