    "This is Bliss"

by redlinemac on November 26, 2007

Pros: HD picture quality, deepness of blacks, sharpness of image, ease of setup

Cons: No backlight on the remote, lack of ability to wall mount, USB connection doesn't work with all USB devices

Summary: Frankly, I love my set. After months of research online and in the stores taking a multitude of set through their paces (of course taking them out of the glaring store mode) I decided on the 5676. I compared it to the Sam 87 (LED) and several Mits models(not even close) and the 5676 came out on top.

I was most surprised when we were able to put the LED 87 next to the bulb 76 because I just knew the LED was going to win out but the 76 took the prize based on clarity, sharpness and color. I, over course, made certain the settings were the same.

Once getting the 76 home and out of the box setup was easy and I was soon enjoying HD. While flipping from game to game I somehow ended up hitting the wrong button and ended up paralyzed, mouth open for a little over and hour. I came across "Winged Migration."

The 76 absolutely blew me away. The colors and every detail of this beatifully-photographed documentary were displayed flawlessly. I was totally pulled in and since have been singing the praises of the 76. Incredible!!!

Now to the bad...The work arounds in living with the set are quite annoying.

    The smaller issues:

When the writeup and salesperson said USB connectivity I immediately thought I could plug any USB device (keychain drive, hard drive...) to the TV just like I do with any and every other piece of hardware in the house. Not the case.

Also, why would you not have your remote backlit when the vast majority of viewing on screens of this type take place in low lit situations? It's really a pain trying to figure out the correct button using the light given off from the TV.

Now to my huge gripe: Samsung at the '07 CES touted the slimfit series as wall mountable. Finding out otherwise after several calls to Samsung reading tbe quote from one of their VP at CES and even pointing them to their own website where it was documented was just disgusting.

Because of my room setup, I knew I was going to need a higher-than-normal view height. From every indication this wall mountable DLP was exactly what I had been looking for.

Well the air was quickly taken from my balloon by some level-2 tech and a most helpful customer service rep. The set needs at least a 4 inch wall clearance for ventilation so a wall mount would not work.

Samsung, if it is not so then don't have your folk out there saying it is.

Not to be deterred too much, I just designed a wall shelf and had a metal shop fabricate it.

All in all, again, I'm in a state of bliss when I'm looking at the picture this set produces so I'm giving it a good rating...I know the other things matter but I'm more happy having a few flaws with a great picture than having no peripheral flaws with a less than great picture.

    I hope this helps...
