"One Beautiful TV set!"
Pros: Excellent Hi-Def, menus easy to navigate, 480i sources are reasonable (after adjusting)
Cons: none at this time
Summary: Excellent pic right out of the box. I've spent the past week "getting to know" the set and have done some tweaking - still some to go. Colors are vibrant, although the red's are little heavy, but the aforementioned adjustments have alleviated that somewhat. Remote easy to use. Sony's product manuals, as usual, aren't the greatest, but I've gotten used to that over the years. I've found that for standard def, it's definitely best to let the signal pass through to the TV at the signal's resolution (480i) and NOT to use the cable boxes up-conversion feature. My DVD player is several years old (Sony DVP NC600) and while it's not even progressive scan, the picture is very nice.
I have the DVD player connected using component video and am using HDMI from the cable box to the TV.
One pleasant surpise that I had was that my 480i sources (even my TV stations that are still analogue-I have cable, so not all stations are digital)are tolerable. Again, I haven't tweaked yet. My DVD player (Sony DVP NC600) isn't even progressive scan, never mind up-converting and the picture was very good-I'm using component video hookups for it.
The Hi-def stuff just makes my jaw drop. watching the football games and the World Series game yesterday was just breathtaking.
The room the TV is in has 5 large windows & 2 skylights and I had absolutely no problem viewing this set.
I took a long time to decide on this set & have absolutely no misgivings whatsover. I would recommend this TV to anyone.Updated
I am still thrilled & still give it a 9. I've had to tweek the settings a bit to ease up on the "red push" and an ever so slight green tint on some SD programming, but no big deal w/all the adjustment options this set offers. I've ordered Digital Video Essentials calibration disk in order to get everything the best possible. I'll update on that after I use it.
One other thing that I did was I purchased a surge protecter/line conditioner. I was surprised at the difference it made. The picture became noticibly brighter (it was bright enough already & I actually had to LOWER the exisiting setting I had to compensate). Quality wise, not much difference on the HD channels, but on SD, particularly the digital channels (I have cablevsion, so all channels 2-78 are analogue), the difference was significant, and actually startling in some cases. It also made a signicant improvement with my DVD's partivularly with clarity of detail.
I'll keep updating this as needed.Updated
After having hads this for several months now, it is becoming clear that virtually ALL of the shortcomings regarding PQ (eg, tint, clarity, etc.) have everything to do w/cablevision & nothing to do with this set.Updated
To anyone trying to decide whether or not to buy this TV, wonder no more. This is the one you want (current model is the A2020, but it's the same TV, slightly different cosmetically).
It's been 9 months & the set continues to be nothing short of spectacular. I have an HDDVD player that I purchased several months back & HD DVD's on this set are literally jaw-dropping.
Nothing left to be said- If it's in your budget, just buy it.
