"Stunning statement piece. Don't base anything on in store audition."
Pros: Fantastic picture ... really fantastic picture. Did I mention the picture is fantastic?
Cons: If I'm forced to search .... blacks not as inky black as BEST crts.
Summary: Got a great deal on one of the top Samsung DLPs and would have never looked beyond it if I wasn't one of the small percentage of folks that is extremely effected by the 'rainbow effect'. So, during the return period and because of the 18 month no pay no finance on the Sony decided to try the SXRD which I also would have the 30 day return on.
Please ... if you have only seen one of these in a store setting you need to see the sxrd in the proper environment. If it's not an option taking one home with a return policy find someone that has one to get a demo. I'm an impulse buyer with a lot of fairly high priced toys but this is one of the few that wowed me so much at first viewing in my system there was never a moment of buyer's remorse. As usual, when I have to rewire/rearrange my system it's a matter of throwing a mountain of cables into the middle of the room and then not seeing or hearing my new toy for a couple of hours until I get the basics set up again so gratification was delayed til I finally got the minimum in place.
The picture using a Denon dvd-5900 I had on loaner was stunning ... and that was just out of the box! I'm usually one of those guys that isn't satisfied til they've tracked down the warranty violating service codes to tweak things so this was a shocker! I was so amazed (put on Star Wars III and see how many times you say holy **** to yourself) I decided to take advantage of the 'package deal' price I could get and upgrade my pre-pro and multi-player, both, in the next week.
I have the Denon DVD-5910 feeding he SXRD now and it's hard to find fault with that combo. But ... if you're looking for downsides ... hmmmm. Let me comment on the downsides I've read about.
Black levels: Not as inky as the very best crts but really close with adjustment.
Off angle viewing: I mean ... I guess not as good as direct view crt. Better than any rptv I've seen .... maybe lcd flat panel or plasma might be better but I've never had those on my list so I can't comment.
Blue black levels: I've seen it ... but only when the whole screen is black ... like when the movie is just starting up. Not even close to being an issue for me.
Built in speakers: I've used them when I was rewiring my main system. For that purpose the fact that they exist ... once the system is connected I could care less.
Not being able to remove the speakers: I guess if you want to install this in a cabinet that could be a concern. But it's not one for me.
So, I rate it a 10 because it has no downsides for me and what I want.

10 ALL THE WAY!
I have one, over six months now; Everone that walks into my house says the same thing--WOW! It is so perfect, I don't want to tell all the discoveries (they are still happening after 6-8 months)...unreal;
Don't read anymore; Just Go buy it like you would a triniton 20-30 years ago.
YOU WILL BE STUNNED.
PS--I have Dish & basic Cable hooked up; Dish offers a package with the "VOOM" Hi-Def channels, among all the others, and it is STUNNING.....
