"Beware Poor Quality and Support" on

Summary: This TV has a great picture and features *when it works*. I have owned this set for approximately 8 months and have experienced 2 major quality issues. Within 1 month of purchase, the TV exhibited a power reset problem similar to the one described by Elwood. Toshiba's suggested solution was to unplug and re-plug the set. Fortunately, the store where I purchased the TV was willing to replace it. Now, roughly 7 months later, the set simply will not power up (a flashing LED on the front indicates a non-recoverable problem). To add insult to injury, the local service provider has a 3 week wait list and has indicated that most of their backlog is due to Toshiba service calls. Toshiba's customer support insists that their warranty providers are independent dealers and they have no influence over their service levels. Hmmm... I definitely understand that electronics can fail, but I cannot recommend a Toshiba TV based upon the frequency of quality issues in combination with the poor customer support.

"AWESOME PICTURE, NICE SIZE, GREAT PRICE/FEATURES" on

Summary: After spending about 3 to 4 weeks looking at the various models and comparing features and reviews and reports, I decided to go with this model. There are several reasons why. First, the set looks real good, nice fit and finish, no exposed RCA plugs or anything on the front of the unit. The set is big enough but not too big for an apartment or smaller living room. The really cool thing is that the set is smaller depth wise than my old 27 inch Sony and weights only around 130 pounds. The other nice thins cosmetically about the set is that a stand was not needed. Most sets with a screen of 46 inches or lower a stand was needed at an additional cost (around $300). Now for the picture and features.... I looked at a Sony 51 inch, a Mitsubishi 46 inch, a Panasonic 47 inch, and a Hitachi 43 inch set. Of all of the units, the Toshiba had the highest resolution of any of them. The picture quality from just plain old cable tv is good to excellent depending on what network you are watching. Some cable channels display a great picture and others while not perfect, still very acceptable for the trade off of a larger screen. When putting in a DVD is where the set really shines. You have 4 screen options on how you want the set to perform. You get standard (4:3), wide screen 1,2, and 3. Watching a DVD on this set the picture in awesome. Looking forward to the HDTV that is getting installed this week. Saw it on disploay where I bought the set and WOW is all I can say. Another nice feature I liked is that this unit does not have the type of screen where if you were to run your fingernails over the screen it makes that zip zip noise. The screen actually has a built in protector which gives it a better picture while protectiing the screen. There are several hook up options on the back of the set so upgrading is very possible. The set up menu is very easy to navigate and the auto convergance is a huge plus. So overall, when comparing the cost of a flat screen tube to a projection widescreen like the Toshiba, the trade off was easy to decide. True you might get a tad bit of a better picture from a set with a tube, but you don't get the size or the widescreen for the same amount of money.

"Very happy customer" on by rpowell777

    Pros: Excellent picture quality

Cons: Initial cost = over $2k

Summary: I bought my 42H81 on sale, and got more than my money's worth out of it. Excellent picture and sound quality. Has performed for years without a problem.

    "Poor Support" on by BeezerMartin

    Pros: Good while it lasted

    Cons: Doesn't last long

Summary: Had a great experience for 4 1/2 years. Now, the picture has a bunch of horizontal tearing and the part needed to fix it is no longer made. Toshiba basically tells me that I am out of luck. I can't say that I would recomend Toshiba to anyone.

"Outstanding clarity and color of the imagfes. HD performance is as good as the source material." on by tristanjohn

Pros: Great price, good connects on back panel and front

Cons: None to speak of, really. You could always quibble with any product, of course, but this set is so good for its price that I hesitate to bash it seriously in any way.

Summary: For the money this has to be one of the superb deals to come down the line. I've had my set now for four years and have had no problems with it save a slight distortion of the panels at the lower corners. Even the sound is well above average for television sets--not home-theater quality by any means, but splendid when compared to other stand-alone units.
