"Great picture but beware"
Pros: Wonderful picture out of the box at an affordable price
Cons: Defective "light engine" being reported by many owners
Summary: After 2 months of owning this set, all of a sudden I noticed a purple streak running from right to left across the top of the screen. The streak gradually widens to 2 inches and looks like an elongated triangle. Fortunately, it is under warranty and Toshiba will replace the light engine and hopefully correct the problem for good.
I've done some poking around and have found that many owners of the 50hm66 have experienced this problem. I wish I could recommend this item because of the great picture and its affordability, but this problem is a real show stopper. If I could take it back, I probably would. Don't be surprised if you see a lot of these refurbished sets selling for very low prices. It's a very frustrating problem.
The only bright spot is that Toshiba has recognized the problem and is willing to fix it as long as it's under warranty. You can find more information here:

I really wish I would've gone with a different tv at this point. My bulb lasted just over 18 months and now I'm looking for a replacement. After doing some research, I've found that 18 months is actually a pretty long time for this set. I've read reviews on other sites and in one extreme case the bulb lasted just 2 months. I guess this adds one more reason to avoid the 50hm66. I've found a replacement bulb for as "cheap" as $188 from www.cablesnbulbs.com but that's not going to help me today. This is my primary TV in my family room.
