"So Far GREAT!!"
Pros: Fantistic Contrast
Cons: Speakers could be better
Summary: I too looked at the Samsung DLP and thought the Toshiba 50HM66 was better. It has the best brightness of the two. In fact I have turned my lamp setting to low (which will increase the life of the lamp)and it still has a great picture.
In response to the defective light engine: The set at the store had this defect but the sales guy said it was a mis-aligned lamp caused by the tv being dropped. I bought one anyway and so far everything is fine with mine. I like the glare coating on the glass. It really makes a difference if you have a lot of windows in the room like I do. I got mine at HH Gregg store for $1675 and they threw in a Toshiba DVD player with HDMI. For watching HDTV there's nothing like DLP!!Updated
I have found out that there is a problem with the light engine for the 2006 Toshiba's. I entered my serial number on their website and my set is affected. So far I have not had any issues with the picture. I will be calling tech support to replace the light engine unit. I do have a 3 year warranty so I'm ok.Updated
Going on 6 months and still no problems with the light engine. I went to the Toshiba website and typed in my serial number. My TV was one of the models that had a problem. I will wait closer to the end of my year before asking for a new light engine. The tv picture is still super clear. Everyone that sees these unit can't believe how clear it is on HD channels. Standard cable channels look fine. I'm very happy with it....
