Pros Picture Quality, Brightness, DLP (HD2+ chip), HDMI
Cons On Screen TV Guide
Summary The Toshiba 52HM84 does not disappoint in picture quality.
For crystal-clear picture, tweak the settings using Video Essentials as follows:
CONTRAST at 65
BRIGHTNESS at 67
COLOR at 48
TINT at R 2
And the matching stand completes the set. All in all...a great value for an exceptional DLP HDTV.
Pros picture quality, BRIGHTNESS (HD2+ chip), functionality, controls
Cons 4:3 picture (as usual with any widescreen), inputs (no DVI, just HD)
Summary We spent a lot of time looking for a new TV for out entertainment center. First off we decided to go with DLP technology because of the price and quality. Plasma is extremely bright and vivid, but costs are out the ass. LCD is similarly overpriced. The three models we purchased and compared (all of this in December mind you) were the Toshiba 52HM84, Samsung HL-P5063W and comparable Sony DLP model (can't remember # off top of my head).
We purchased the sony first, because of its price, but soon found problems with the hues in the TV. No matter the color configuration on the TV we received green tints and color distortion. We couldn't find a fix, and brought the TV back for the popular Samsung model. Everyone knows that Samsung is the pioneer in the industry, and came out with DLP first (with Texas Instrument providing the DLP technology). The model we tested was excellent, but the picture was too "projectiony." E.G. the screen wasn't bright enough and wasn't as clear. The Toshiba HM84 has a HD2+ chip, contrary to the Samsung model's HD3. This 2+ chip improves the contrast ratios and black levels, offering a much brighter and clearer picture overall. The HD3 chip isn't an upgrade from the HD2+, and is merely a cheaper alternative. IMHO, the HD2+ is well worth the extra bucks.
Of course, as with all widescreen TVs, the regular TV watching experience (4:3 ratio) isn't much. There really is no way around this, but overall I'm impressed with the Toshiba's stretch ratios.
As for the high definition signal... it is absolutely gorgeous.
Pros Good picture
Cons Reliability, Support, Cost of lamp, availability of parts
Summary TOSHIBA WARRANTY STINKS - I have a 52HM84 the bulb is bust after 8 months about 600 hours instead of the estimated 8,000 and Toshiba has no bulb for the last 25 days and still waiting a bit extreme for $3000 TV and warranty repair - I wonder if Toshiba has some defect that the bulbs are going after about 6 months and they are running short on them. Want to buy a TV that it needs a new bulb ($275) every 600 hours instead of every 8,000 say every 6 months rather than 6 years and Oh you don't have a TV for a month while Toshiba finds a lamp. AFTER MY EXPERIENCE I WOULD NOT BUY THIS TV EVEN THOUGH THE PICTURE IS GOOD - I BOUGHT DLP FOR RELIABILITY HELL I COULD GET A PLASMA IF I WANTED A HEADACHE
Pros Excellent value for the money, picture quality is awesome - even though it has shown my cable providers analog signal to be less than desirable. I am now looking into upgrading to direct digital signal to do this TV justice. I must admit to being a Toshib
Cons This is a different type of TV than what we all grew up with. The Mercury lamp takes about 3/4 of a minute to get to full brightness, and the TV "stays on" in cool down mode for about a minute or two after you shut it off. This really isn't a "con" but j
Pros Easy set-up, great control options, crystal sharp picture, "mind-boggling" HDTV, outstanding color & clarity in brightly lit sunny room, REAL stereo with separated speakers and beautiful design.
Cons Can't find any after 30+ days of normal use.
Summary I did significant "due diligence" before ultimately selecting the Toshiba 52HM84. I couldn't be happier with my choice. I have a Charter Comm. cable feed and both the HD and regular cable stations are abolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend purchasing the Toshiba cabinet that can easily be had at discount. The Toshiba cabinet helps "make" the product. TV has lots of good user picture & sound control opitions. I believe it's a high quality product for a reasonable price. And, since I'm normally NOT a "Pollyanna", my rating this product a perfect "10" is definitely out-of-character for me. But, thus far my expectations have been exceeded and I just can't find anything to complain about. Go figure, huh?
