"sony vaio pocket is better" on by magnesiumalloy
Pros: view photos (like sony viao pocket), girls think it looks cute, easy interface (only people with little computing skills care)
Cons: sound quality just above average, not that much different from regular ipod, battery life still shorter than the major competition
Summary: sony vaio has slightly bigger screen, longer battery life, remote control (with a screen on it so you can see what you're doing), atrac3 has same sound quality as mp3 (128kbps) at half the file size (64kbps) so i can get twice as many song on the same capacity hard drive which is more than the 60gb ipod photo.the vaio pocket is easy to use. i know connect.com isn't all that good so i just go to best buy or other music store and get a cd for the just $2 more (sometimes the same price) than an album on itunes cost and download it directly onto the device with sonicstage sofware. it really isn't that hard to use like everyone says version 3.0 is very good. besides if anything happens to my computer i'll still have the original albums with me.
ipod is good but to me it is not the best player out there and it doesn't deserve all the hype and bias that it gets. i think the sony looks better. vaio pocket has been out for about a year now and cnet never reviwed it. ipod was immediately given
the "editor's choice" rating the day it was released.
instead of trying to see if a player stacks up to the ipod try seeing how they all stack up as quality audio players. you'll soon find out how many essential features the competition has like multi format support (creative zen and iriver players) that is a major drawback to the ipod since mp3 has horrible sound quality compared to atrac3,wma,ogg. the ipod can play games who cares? the games on a cell phone are better than that crap.Updated
replaceable battery (creative players) is not available on ANY ipod. so if the battery goes down you can't simply take it out put in a fully charged spare on long tips. if the battery starts to fail after a few months you have to send it to the manufacturer and pay $100 or more then pay for shipping. so people said that you can replace the battery yourself. that's if you take the ipod apart which voids the warranty but creative zen is designed to have the battery taken out without the need of tools how's that for ease of use. the replacement batteries on ipod cost like $99 plus the manufacturers replacment cost. -
"Great value compared to 30/60GB iPod Photos" on by jmcafee
Pros: Easy and fun to use; color album art is great compared to monochrome iPods; includes dock, A/V and firewire cables, and belt case not included with new (30/60GB) iPod Photos
Cons: Ear buds are uncomfortable and hard to keep inserted
Summary: I bought my son a 10GB iPod a year ago and never dreamed I would want one. I'm of the generation that doesn't absolutely, positively HAVE TO HAVE music strapped to my side all day. But after seeing how much he enjoyed his iPod, I discovered a unique way for me to use use one to unclutter my music collection of CDs, vinyls, cassettes, and open real tapes from my youth. You can tell I'm no Gen Xer, but I still enjoy a variety of classic rock, jazz and classical.
Now my music collection has been digitized and stored on a 40GB iPod Photo. Ripping the CDs was a snap, and dragging album art from various web sites was easy and fun. Digitizing the vinyl, cassettes, and open real tapes was time-consuming since it has to be done in real time, but it was fun to relive some of the music I hadn't played in decades! (P.S. I've got the equipment to do this, but you can buy an inexpensive cable and software to connect a turntable, cassette or open real deck to your Mac or PC.) So now my CD collection is stored away and all my music is in an uncluttered corner of our kitchen. My wife, who is no techno-geek, even enjoys playing with the iPod because she knows every piece of music we own is stored on this cute little device from Apple. She even takes it on her walks and snaps it back on the dock beside the Bose when she returns. No more CDs to fumble with!
I chose the iPod Photo for the color screen. The newer models don't include the dock, A/V cables, or hard case with belt clip. (I found one in the close out section at Best Buy for less than the new 30GB models ($350ish.) So snatch one of these up if you can.
One more thing, the color screen is sharp enough for me to see without my reading glasses and the album art helps me identify the music selection after scrolling through the menus. I predict all future iPods will have color screens.
So even if you're not in the 50+ demographic, but want to simplify your life, go out there and buy an iPod. You'll never regret it and your kids and grand kids will think you're AWESOME!!Updated
The iPod rests in its dock which sits neatly atop a Bose Wave Radio. The audio cable which came with my iPod Photo plugs into the back of the dock using a standard 1/8" mini connector. The other end of the cable has RCA stereo left and right connectors for the back of the Wave Radio. Volume is controlled by the Bose. The sound quality is unbelievable! -

"The more possessions you own, the more your possessions own you." on by First Hokage
Pros: Color Screen, Shows Album Art, Is an iPod, etc.
Cons: Shiny Backside / Screen Scratches Very Easily, My iPod Photo Freezes Up Once in a While, Somewhat Difficult to Manage Photos.
Summary: If you're going to get this iPod Photo, then you better buy a decent case, because the one that comes with the iPod Photo WILL scratch up your iPod, for it (the case) blocks the Click Wheel as well as the screen, so you're constantly having to get it out, which result in a TON of scratches. Also, you might want to buy a protective film cover for your screen, because that WIll scratch up as well if you don't. See what I mean about my one-line summary?
Was it worth it? You bet, but only if REALLY love music/want the color screen, otherwise, stick with the regular black and white iPod.
