"Great unit, Great sound, poor ergonomics" on by onewarmguy

Pros: Excellent sound, excellent radio reception, Good functionality

Cons: Hard to adjust, Viewing angle of display is very shallow, no adapter for 5th gen Ipod makes dock fragile

Summary: I've owned this unit for over a year now it was purchased as a replacement for my Boston Solo as I wanted a dock for my ipod. The sound as expected from Boston Acoustics is excellent and it possesses an excellent radio receiver; once it's set up it's an incredibly good unit. The main problem lies in the display, and adjustment features. The viewing angle of the display is very shallow maybe 45 degrees, I keep it on my headboard shelf and can't see the time when I'm lying down and even at it's dimmest setting it's still very bright. Making adjustments can be an adventure in frustration, the function control knob has very soft stops and it's extremely easy to go past past the function your trying to select. The function selector indicator on the display is a pair of tiny brackets on each side of the function that are extremely easy to miss, whats more the function only remains selected for a short time then defaults back to the base display. Another minor annoyance is the lack of an adapter for a 5th gen Ipod, although the docking jack still works, the connection feels very fragile, Boston Acoustics was very unsympathetic when contacted about this lack.
Given it's price, and Boston Acoustics reputation for good design, I expected a lot more thought would go into the ergonomics. It's almost as if the clock radio functions were thrown in as an afterthought. I would only recommend this unit to someone with sensitive fingers and 20/20 vision.

"Excellent sound at a great price" on by panditsh

Pros: Deep sound with a fair amount of controls

Cons: Changing modes can be made easier

Summary: I have owned this unit for more than six months and am very happy with the performance. I mostly listen to music on my iPhone (3GS). I also play the radio from time to time. Not used much as an alarm clock or other features like aux in, AV out, etc. It's kept in a fairly largish space (a living room-kitchen combo about 14' x 27'), yet I get room-filling sound right out of box. The controls are fairly simple and intuitive so it's easy to make adjustments, e.g., changing bass levels when switching from music to radio. The unit is light enough to move around though I've so far kept it at one place. I would strongly recommend this unit. I have tried iPhone 3G and 3Gs without any problems, but one needs to make sure later generations will remain compatible.

"sweet sweet sound!" on by bhondorp

Pros: I've owned this unit for about 2 weeks now and I was blown away immediately by the sound. if you like rich, full sound, this unit is what you're looking for. I'm done w/ bulk/wires/pieces and will be buying several more of these units for my home.

Cons: the ONLY con I can come up with is that the remote doesn't fully control my iPod, just a simple play/next/back. Unless I don't know what I'm doing, I can't change albums via the remote.

Summary: If SOUND is your main priority, buy it. if you're more fickle about intricate features...at least try it out. BA will stand behind their product if you're not happy!

"Clocks always lose time" on by jamesharbinson

Pros: For the money, the audio can't be beat.

Cons: I've owned three clocks now and every one of them loses time. It might be as annoying as a few minutes a month, but this morning my bedroom clock lost 45 minutes and I was almost late for work.

Summary: One bad experience could be an anomaly, but I've now owned THREE of their clocks and experienced the loss of time on every single one of them. A great sounding clock radio that can't keep time is about as useful as a GPS that plays MP3's but has maps from the 1800s. I am officially done with Boston Acoustics. How incompetent is their engineering department anyway? I can buy a digital clock from The Dollar Store that works better.

"Fantastic sound and design" on by morganted

Pros: The sound is rich and full. Design is attractive and features are intuitive. Zero distortion at max volume. Remote gives access to most, if not all of the product's features.

Cons: The mode dial control is a little sensitive when switching between modes.

Summary: I have purchased several units to find the perfect balance between sound quality, product design and features. I've purchased the Vers 1.5 rx, the Alec Lansing units and others. The Boston Acoustic unit is quite impressive. Looking forward to years of performance.
