Manufacturer description
The Dell 5 GB Pocket Digital Jukebox MP3 Player contains impressive features from the original Dell DJ in a package that easily fits into just about any pocket. At a scant 4.4 Oz and measuring just 3.5 x 2.1 x 0.5 inches, the Pocket DJ is a great companion for all of your adventures! With 5 GB capacity, the Digital Jukebox lets you carry up to 2500 songs at any given time and provides up to 10 hours of battery life on a single battery charge. In addition to supporting the WMA audio format, the multifunctional music player plays high-fidelity MP3 audio files, and also provides a way to back up critical data from your PC. It boasts an anodized aluminum case, a brilliant 1.62-inch (diagonal) LCD with blue back light and an USB 2.0 interface for PC synchronization and alternative battery charging.Product summary
The good: Good value for a solid if unspectacular player; easy to operate; compatible with DRM-protected WMA files; decent sound quality.
The bad: No major extra features; mediocre battery life; scroll barrel is no match for iPod Click Wheel; Janus DRM support is coming, but when?
The bottom line: If you're looking for a simple high-capacity player and don't want to pay for extra features, the Dell Pocket DJ is a fine choice.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more. Dell stuck to its old playbook for its first micro hard drive-based MP3 player. The Pocket DJ looks virtually identical to the regular DJ, right down to the anodized aluminum case, the scroll barrel in the center, and the blue backlighting on the display and buttons.
Micro hard drive-based players have become very popular, and it seems that manufacturers have at last temporarily reached a détente in terms of the size and weight of a device containing a 5GB drive. The Apple iPod Mini, as well as the latest models from Creative, Rio, Samsung, and Virgin, are all roughly the same size and weight.

The same is true of the Dell Pocket DJ. It measures 3.5 by 2.1 by 0.5 inches and weighs 4.4 ounces. That is perhaps slightly larger and heavier than the iPod Mini, but no matter. The device is compact and light enough to take with you everywhere. (If you want something significantly smaller, you'll need a flash-based MP3 player instead.) In this class, buyers will be choosing based on other factors, including aesthetics, features, and performance.
Speaking of aesthetics, the Pocket DJ won't attract any oohs or ahhs, but it has a clean, sturdy, and efficient look that works equally well at home, in a dorm room, or at the office--just about anywhere. Dedicated volume buttons, the power button, the headphone jack, and a USB 2.0 port line the unit's top side while a Hold switch resides on the back. The USB port serves as both the data transfer and power connection.
For this second generation of DJs, Dell has refined the interface. The top-level menus on the 1.6-inch-diagonal LCD now include Music Library, Now Playing, Play Mode, Date & Time, Settings, and Info. Overall, it reminds us of the interface on Creative's nonflash MP3 players--and that's a good thing.
The Dell Pocket DJ is designed to work with both MP3s and Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. It's also compatible with any of the popular online music stores that uses secure WMA formats, including BuyMusic, Napster, MSN Music, and Wal-Mart. Of course, it doesn't support AAC files or work with iTunes Music Store--that is strictly the province of the various iPods--nor does it support alternative formats such as OGG (Ogg Vorbis). We were disappointed that neither the Pocket DJ nor the new DJ currently support Microsoft's latest digital rights management (DRM) features out of the box even though the new features were available within Windows Media Player 10.0 before the new DJ models arrived. Dell says it will provide a free downloadable flash upgrade in early February to support WMP 10.0 DRM (previously known as Janus), but that is extra work for users and is likely to cause some confusion. The primary reason to get the update with the new DRM is to be able to use your MP3 player take advantage of the entire catalog of subscription content from services such as Napster.
The Pocket DJ has all the basics. The 5GB drive is sufficient to hold 1,200 CD-quality MP3s, according to Dell's calculations. It works well with the Dell-branded version of Musicmatch Jukebox 9.0 that is included--even though version 10.0 has been out for some time--but if you prefer, you can also use it with Windows Media Player 10.0. You can quickly sync basic info--song title, artist, album, genre, and playlists--between the device and software either manually or automatically using USB 2.0. You can play music in standard or shuffle modes, and the Pocket DJ has an equalizer with eight presets and a custom setting.
That's basically it. You won't find any bells and whistles on the Pocket DJ. It doesn't come in different colors, and there is no FM tuner, no line-in recording, no color LCD to display album art, no playlists on the go, no PIM features (although there is a calendar), and so on. These are features found on many competing products such as the Creative Zen Micro. Then again, the Dell Pocket DJ costs less than most competing MP3 players.
The Dell Pocket DJ's performance didn't stand out in any one area, but overall, it's a reliable, solid performer. The Pocket DJ's rechargeable lithium-polymer battery is rated for 10 hours of battery life, and that is basically what we got. To be more precise, the 9.5 hours it scored in CNET Labs' tests put it in between the Apple iPod Mini (8 hours) and longer-lasting products such as the Creative Zen Micro and, most notably, the 20-hour Rio Carbon.
The sound quality was fine, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 95dB (the higher the signal-to-noise ratio, the cleaner the sound). Generally speaking, any device at 95dB or above is pretty good, though some MP3 players definitely do better; the Zen Micro, for example, has a ratio of 98dB. Consumers can utilize any of the eight preset EQ settings or a four-band, user-defined EQ to fine-tune their audio. As with most MP3 players, the included earbuds are uncomfortable and don't sound particularly great, so we recommend that you invest in a good pair of 'phones.
On our tests, the Pocket DJ transferred a music library at a rate of 2.7MB per second over its USB 2.0 connection. That's a solid score--right about where it should be.

Portable entertainment right in the palm of your hand, reliable
Pros: Given the hard disk inside it as opposed to flash memory, this DJ is quiet and it doesn't vibrate as much as the Apple iPod Video.
Cons: The scroll barrel is slow compared to the Apple click wheel, and the display is a bit hard to see in the dark

Who needs an Ipod when you can have a Dell...
Pros: Easy to use. Small, compact & fits almost anywhere...
Cons: If you download songs from the net you might night be able to rewind or go backwards on a song. The system will shut down & you must reboot. Finding accessories.

Good MP3 player.....
Pros: It's very small, easy to use and transfer music
Cons: Not too many features, volume button problems
This MP3 player is for music. That's all it doesn't ahve a lot of features. over time it kinda messes up. I've had problems with the volume control and it's starting to freeze a lot more than usual. Maybe it's the weather maybe not, but overall it's an ok player.

9.8 rating. Very good. one flaw
Pros: Extremely simple and basic, storage space, dedicated volume buttons, easy navigation
Cons: battery life
Very good basic player, exactly what i was looking for.
Simple controls, navigation, good capacity for the price i paid ($150 when dell.com had a promo)
Very happy with this.
Personally...the glowing blue controls and screen...i prefer over the ipod's plain controls..even with it's color screen.

Good product. Ease of use good support not an ipod but for the price difference I can live with it.
Pros: Easy to set up and load songs even for a computer dummy. light weight enough to carry in a pocket or wear on your arm while jogging.
Cons: Needs better lighting for daytime reading. Washes out in bright sun. Needs instruction book with it rather than have to go on line for it.

So Many Flaws, I hate it.
Pros: cheaper than Ipod
Cons: So many! The battery life is attrocious. Maybe 1 or 2 hours max. It is so frustrating to charge it before I go to the gym and then have the power go dead mid-workout.

one awsome mp3 player
Pros: small, loud, and easy to use
Cons: some times slow, micro hard drive
the dell pocket dj is about the same size as the apple ipod mini. i love the set up of the buttons instead of the "wheel" on the ipod. and i love the blue light up.
cons:
it at some times slow at loading a song because of the hard drive. it does not compaire to the new ipods (ipod video/nano)
does not do as much as the ipod. bigger than the rio nitrus and carbon

2nd time I'm returning the Device due to battery life.
Pros: None at the moment.
Cons: Battery life.
Other then the battery life, i like it. It's easy to use and it does what i need it to do. Plus, i love Napster To Go and that is the main reason I got this instead of an Ipod.

Perfect for Music Subscription Service Users
Pros: Inexpensive, Easy to Use, Stylish, Small, Great Sound Quality
Cons: Backlight Too Dark, Menu System Very Tedious, Lag Time Between Songs, Horrible Earbuds
With the advent of music subscription services like Napster, Rhapsody and Yahoo! Unlimited, it just makes sense to scrap iTunes and their 99 cent per song purchases for the ease of "renting" 1,000,000 songs for $5 per month (Yahoo! Music Unlimited). Unfortunately, Apple will not make their iPod compatible with such services for fear of it taking a bite out of their iTunes profits. So what is a person left to do? Find something else, right? Well, find something else I did and I'm happy with my decision.
As an equally rabid Dell fanatic, the Pocket DJ seemed like an obvious choice for me. I've got a Dell desktop, a Dell laptop, and a Dell pocket PC and I'm more than pleased with all three. The Pocket DJ is no exception.
Tiny. That's the first word that comes to mind when you hold it in your hand. I compared it to my iPod Mini and it seemed to be slightly smaller lengthwise, but a bit thicker. It weighs about the same also. If you're a college student like me and you're going to be carrying this thing around campus, you won't even notice it's in your pocket (which may be a good thing or a bad thing).
The menu is quite a bit more tedious than that of the iPod. Every little command requires a drop-down menu and subsequent scrolling and clicking. Instead of simply clicking on an artist to display their songs like the iPod, you must first click on the artist which will bring up a new menu with several options including "View Artist Songs". Once you click on that, you then scroll through the songs until you find the one you want. After you click on the song you want, guess what? Yep, another menu. You must then click on "Play Track" before it will play, which brings up my next grievance ... lag time.
It seems that about 80% of the time I experience a 3-4 second delay between choosing a song or skipping to the next track before the song actually starts. It's not a big deal, but it definitely gets old after a while.
The backlight is horrible! It's WAY too dark. It looks kinda cool from afar, but if you're trying to actually read it, it proves to be quite a pain. The only adjustments you can make to it is to adjust the contrast which makes the black letters a little lighter, but the light stays the same. Again, not a big deal, but if you're trying to browse your songs while you're driving at night or while you're walking, just make sure to look up from time to time because you're going to be spending a lot of time straining to see the screen.
The sound is great. There's not a whole lot I can say about that. It sounds like just about any other MP3/CD player. The earbuds are not only uncomfortable, but are down right painful. They're way too big and too hard and too round to fit comfortably in your ears. Invest in a good comfy pair of buds (mine were $45 and I'm very pleased with them).
Overall, I'm thrilled about my DJ. I'm sure the little nuances will eventually become routine, i.e. navigating the menus -- I don't know if I'll ever get used to the backlight, however. In the end, I would give this model a solid 8 out of 10. You figure you're paying $200 for 5GB ... can't get much better than that.

Cons: Begins to get boring

Good simple music player.
Pros: Easy to setup and use, decent battery life. very durable
Cons: none at all very very nice player
This player is so much easier to use than the iPod mini, the scroll wheel is far easier to master than the iPods click wheel I know we have both in the family. The DJ is just better all the way around.
DJ is backlit automatically, iPod must turn it on everytime you want it. try that in the dark!
The software much easier than the iTunes stuff.
iPod must buy a 30 dollar adapter to charge from a regular wall outlet, DJ comes with it. The Rio ce2100 also comes with a wall charger! also a great little player, we have one in the family also, and is backlit when any button is touched. for 140 bucks!
Just the backlighting and the 30 dollar charger are enough of a reason to choose others over the iPod, the click wheel, is hard to use 3 of us try to get used to it we can't.
not to bash the iPod but really it is over hyped there are better players out there, when 3 adults who own and use mp3 players on a daily basis all hate the iPod and find it hard to use that says something.
Dell DJ 5 gig, easy to use, no uneccesary frills, just a great user friendly, music player.

HIGHLY recommended for Napster-to-go
Pros: Dead simple controls. Great performance. Works perfectly with Napster-to-go.
Cons: Battery life is a bit lacking.
Hallelujah! A player that actually WORKS! No more duplicate tracks, random lockups, and most annoying of all, 30 sec pauses between tracks. Sure, it still takes up to 5 sec to change tracks sometimes, but Pocket DJ has been by far the LEAST buggy player with Napster-to-go. Props to Dell firmware developers. You succeeded where others failed.
Dell Pocket DJ is seriously underrated by CNET. I think they gave a low rating due to Pocket DJ's lack of "extras" but personally, I couldn't care less. I just want my player to play music. Period. I love how simple the interface is and I don’t miss any of the extras. Sure, I'm a gadget lover, but I don't want to crash my car tinkering with layers upon layers of menu options either. With Pocket DJ, it's scroll, click, and you're good to go.

2,500 tracks???
Pros: Looks great, easy to use, affordable for the file size....
Cons: but the file size don't meet the hype! average battery life, few accessories, technical support bombed on easy question!!
The one true problem I have with the DJ may be the result of my own ignorance. One of the selling points that persuaded me to purchase my DJ was the statement on Dell's website that the player can hold up to "2,500 tracks". However, My 5GB DJ Jr. is looking to top out around 1,300 songs. Now, I wouldn't raise a stink about a discrepancy of 100-to-200 tracks if I'm already getting 2,000-plus, but 2,500 tracks is TWICE the size of what I'm getting, which doesn't seem right. And Tech. support has not been of any use to me: one techie said that I should copy my songs to MP2 format, then convert them to MP3 before saving them to my player, which is hogwash. Another said that WMA format is smaller than MP3, but by my comparisons, that's not the case. Mabey someone in the C/NET community will read this and provide some help - I would just hate it if I was able to double the file size capacity of my player, but couldn't because I'm too stupid. One very minor con is there is not enough accessories for the Pocket DJ players, especially third-party accessories, and especially for the DJ Jr. However, the storage size notwithstanding, the Pocket DJ Jr. still provides a lot of music in a very user-friendly package, and at a very affordable price. For independant-minded music lovers, I would definitely recommend buying it!

don't use musicmatch... otherwise good check for coupon codes
Pros: small, good looking, sounds great, easy to navigate
Cons: earbuds bight, can't charge and sync unlike the 20g dj
When you consider that the price isn't really $200 then it's an even better deal. It works great too. I love mine. As long as you plan on getting some new headphones, you're set.
P.S. The scroll thing is good enough for me.

Dell scroll wheel no match for iPod circular push wheel? pfffft. CNET being paid off by apple.
Pros: The Dell scroll wheel is vastly superior to the frustrating spin wheel used by the way over-hyped ipod mini. Lightweight. All you need, nothing you don't.
Cons: Battery life could be longer. Would like to be able to manipulate playlists by using the player.

Durable, good sound, easy to navigate and upload music to.
Pros: No "leakage" from ear buds, good sound, easy to navigate (even for the tech challenged), easy to upload music to, love the blue lights on the front, replacing lost/damaged ear buds costs just $11.
Cons: Can only get from Dell Web site so price is firm, a little bulkier/heavier than others.

Very Good.......
Pros: Scroll Barrell, Blue screen, easy download
Cons: wasnt free.......
I am not an mp3/computer expert. i got this for the gym and vacations. withing the first 20 minutes i had this product i was putting music on it, which it does quickly in my opinion.
I have had it a month, it didnt freeze or shut off, except when it goes off due to lack of activity which is a nice feature. music sounds great,
What i have to say to all the people who are looking for what i was looking for i think this player will get it done, all i want is music i dont need all the useless features these others brag about. this plays music, battery life is what they claim about 8-10 hours and is backed by a year warranty that made me feel better after all the horror stories you will read about different players, GOOD LUCK!

DJ.
When it came in the mail a couple days later, I was amazed at how much better it looked in real life compared to on the computer screen. It is really tiny, but it is heavy and sturdy enough to feel like it is well made. I have even dropped it on a tile floor before, and the player wasn't damaged. I use it every day in school and at home, and I have only had one minor problem. It froze up on the first day I had it, and i just stuck a paper clip in the reset button and it worked fine after that. One other thing that could be better is the responsiveness of the hard drive. If you press the button for the next song over and over again to get to a song towards the end of a playlist, the screen will take a while to catch up. The best idea is to use the menu navigation button to select the song you want instead.
Overall, I have been extremely impressed with the pocket dj, and would take it over the ipod all over again if given the chance. I recommend it to people who want a high capacity mp3 player without the repetitiveness of the ipod.

Dell Needs To Fix
Pros: Blue LCD, Design
Cons: Almost Everything else, Scroll Barrel
Hmmm, sorry to say about the earlier review, I actually now would give the Dell PDJ a 7 out of 10, instead of a 5. I've been using my friend's(and not my cousin's) Dell and his seems to be working just fine. However, the only thing that is keeping this thing from a 10 or 9 is that it's battery life(10 hrs) is tooooooo short!!! also, the included earbud headphones are lousy(i think everyone agrees with me right here), and the non user removable battery thing(which is really bad because it costs $100 to replace it from Dell). That's a -3 Points right there. But that shouldnt be a let down, the Dell PDJ is still a great player(that is if ur not looking for a lot of extras and all you want is just music). The thing that really intrigues me is it's look. I don't know what people see in the ipod mini(it looks dull to me). I think this is the best loooking mp3 player! It has a nice silver shell, a BLUE(omg, BLUE!! NOT WHITE!! BLUEEEE) LCD, a scroll barrel(which is really fun to play with, touch sensitive stuff gets boring), and the play, rewind, foward, and power buttons light up blue, which is really really cool. I would've gotten this player if it had a user replacable battery(i have a dark blue zen micro btw) because no way am i paying $100 for Dell to replace it.

good and some bad but, overall very good
Pros: looks good, excellent customer care, syncs w/napster, very easy to use
Cons: less than 10hrs play, ear plugs (too big) , musicmatch bites (use windows media or Napster)
Good News:
(1) I don't know why people keep ragging on it but, the customer care is excellent and 24 hrs! Honestly!
(2)Napster to go.($15 per mo) There are only 3 Mp3 players the Napster to go will sync with which will allow you to download all the music you want (only on to your player) @ no additional cost. U have 2 refresh about every 4 days & only the Dell DJ 5GB not 20GB.
(3)Very easy to use, you can manipulate the controls blind, (so you can keep it in your coat) and it comes with a sleep timer. I got the arm band so I can use it at the gym. easy access, Perfect!
Its not all good: I had a some of problems with the original only stayed charged for around 4hrs. Then the replacement DJ constantly freezed. I am currently on my 3rd replacement. Customer care is always polite and very thorough. I had a replacement both times in 48 hrs or less. In one case spoke to them on Sat and had it Monday!
When I first purchased it they claimed 12hrs of continuous play but, have since revised it to 10. Personally I think it is more like 8> but >6.
It dosen't come with a lot of extra stuff, e.g., alarm, etc. but, I don't want that stuff.
Get your earplugs- they seem alright at first but, it just annoy to readjusting.

Dell products rarely have defects!!
Pros: Everything you love about the DellTM DJ just got a lot more portable. The Pocket DJ lets you bring along your favorite 25001 songs in a package so small you'll forget you're carrying it. At the price
Cons: None that any dell user that likes this can see
Dell is better in everything. Only thing they struggling with at the moment is tabloid computers like gateway. however, pocket dj's are becoming popular and now they are fixing any errors that they might have.Escape the iCult with a player that's got the same weight and dimensions of an iPod Mini; it carries 5 GB and a prettier price tag

Be aware! This is a 4.7GB mp3 player
Pros: Very easy to use, good price, compact size. As the CNET editor described in his review, it is user friendly. You don't need a manual to figure out how to use this mp3 player.
Cons: 4.7GB instead of 5 GB($199), more expensive than 4GB mini Ipod($175)
-i recommend this mp3 players for people that doesn't care much for extra features and design. Very user friendly. scroll and click, that it! I'm getting one for my mom.
- You can store data. good for storing your school report and other data.
-EQ setting: Custom EQ, Acoustic, classical, disco, jazz, new age, pop, rock, vocal.
-10hour playtime (not sure about this, i fell asleep for 6hours, and the battery was drained out)
- sleep timer, date&time, and calendar included
-The player displays other language (ex. Korean song titles and artists in Korean) without any language software installed.

- this is 4.7GB mp3 player. Not sure how other mp3 players are, but dell customer service claims that the dell pocket dj software uses .3GB/ 300MB of your 5GB hard drive. Thats a lot of songs... compared to 256MB mp3 players we use to have back in the days.. They said, too bad.. sorry.. goodbye.
-Dell customer service is horrible. Because of globalization and downsizing, Dell uses people from asia/middle east (ex. India, etc) to deal with technical or other service problems. They will transfer you from on representative to another for hours and hours until you give up and hang up the phone.
- The earphone makes static noise.. a lot of tremble? noise. It's also too big for average ears.
- the player overheats.. i'm worried. it's like a cell phone, if you have it on for a while, the mp3 player gets hot. Hopefully, it doesn't short circuit my player.
-No FM Tuner, No voice recorder, poor and simple design with screws on the side.
-no case, waist clip.. no accessories... you have to buy everything! Only earphone and charger included.
-from Dell.com you'll have to pay $199, plus $10 tax, plus $5-8 S&H, total of $210-$220.
CONCLUSION/OVERALL: This player is for older, and more mature consumer with no preference other than listening to mp3.
-If you're between age 9-16, buy a mini ipod 4GB($175 amazon.com, no tax, free S&H), mainstream player that everyone has and very popular/stylish/cute;
-Age 17-27, Creative Zen Micro 5GB($225-234, no tax, free shipping), one of the smallest mp3 on the market. smaller than mini ipod! very stylish and new. My girlfriend loves it! very stylish, very small. includes FM tuner and voice recorder, and case, belt clip.
-age 28-80, Dell pocket DJ ($199+tax+S&H) User friendly, poor style, no color, no fm tuner, not much option. It took me 5-10 minute to figure out all the options available.
Only reason i bought Pocket DJ was because i had a $75 coupon from Dell. But i still had to pay the tax.. and i bought the player for $135 & free shipping(limited time S&H offer). I would not pay $199+tax+S&H for this item..
This is a follow-up on my original opinion.
- There was a battery problem. The battery would last for only 2 hours instead of 10 hours the dell claims. For some reason, the battery would continue to drain with the power off! very weird, but the dell replaced the Dell Pocket DJ (5gb) in a kind manner.
-It's impossible to reach customer/ technical service through phone. Here is a secret... use the dell online chat customer/tech support... it will only take 1 minute before you speak to a representative, plus, you get to print a copy of your chat and email a copy too..
- No manual for the mp3 player..
- i actually like the scroll on the mp3 player.. it feels like a scroll from your pc mouse.. i like it better than touch pad like ipod and creative zen micro.

Cons: Software (musicmatch), Mine stoped communicating with my computer, low battery life (mine died after about 3hrs), still would of rather had an I-pod or a creative zen micro

Best for Music Only!
Pros: Well basically, the Dell DJP is just for music like the Ipod; however, the Ipod has all of these extra features making it more expensive such as games, address books, alarms, etc. I say, if you want games, get a gameboy. I'm sure you don't need an addres

2.5X the songs of Ipod mini for 50 bucks less...
Pros: 1. Holds 2500 songs versus 1000 for iPod mini(at 4 mins per song w/WMA encoding). 2. Easy to use scroll wheel on par with iPod clickwheel 3. Aluminum case is very durable, not like the iPod Mini's plastic one.
Cons: Froze once, but this was easily fixed by resetting it w/a paper clip. Resetting doesn't erase anything or even change any settings. It just restarts player

Nice player, but it is NOT even close to Ipod or IRiver or Zen Micro
Pros: Small, easy to use, sound quality is fine, price is very good, WMA files work with it which is good, I guess.
Cons: MUSICMATCH!!!, Scroll wheel/thingy is a step well below the Ipod Mini, MUSICMATCH!!!, Interface could be less cluttered and more like the Ipod, MUSICMATCH!!! I'd buy the Ipod Mini, Zen Micro or Rio carbon over this, but is still a fine player.

An excellent product better than the IPOD Mini
Pros: The software as well as the Dell itself are very easy to use. No need to even read the instructions for most people. Feels solid in spite of it's small size, easy to read screen and the back light are excellent. At 179.00, you can't find a better buy.

Forget The Musicmatch Software!!
Pros: Well----Great sound quality, truly pocket size, easy navigation, supported by Windows Media Player 10, $200 price tag, gets sent straight to your door, very nice form factor!!!
Cons: Musicmatch software is unintuitive and buggy(WMP 10 is infinitely better.) Tech support is an unknown at this point. Throw away the ear buds and buy a pair of Senheiser PX 100 headphones ($40)

A sweet buy, with nice capacity, and a durable case.
Pros: Strong Resistant case, unlike the mini, and the barrel is 100 times more durable then the mini click wheel. And with a larger capacity then the mini it still comes at a cheaper price. And to top it off, top of the line service from Dell.
Cons: Not really any extras.

A mediocre product from a company focused on corporate rather than consumer markets
Pros: Cheaper than iPod mini (you can take the 50 bucks you save from buying this over an iPod and invest it in Apple stock); you can stand out from the iPod crowd and "think different"; You'll even save more money if you wait - Dell continues to drop the price

Pros: Easy to use electronic. Great for someone who does not want to work at having fun. I have a 15G Dell DJ & purchased this for my child who was able to maneuver through the menu right away; simple, sleek, compact & definitely worth taking a look at.
Cons: Not any real cons; the wheel could be alittle smoother to operate and no recorder like its counterpart.

small and cheap
Pros: It holds all my songs and fits in my pocket, so I can't really ask for more than that. It was cheap, my wife has an ipod and loves it but I'm just as happy with mine so far. WM10 is just as easy to use as Itunes, so that doesn't bother me either. I hate

Cons: It's not an I-POD! It won't make as much as a status quo fashion statement with your Von Dutch hat, Your Abercrombie & Fitch T-shirt, AX jeans and Puma sneaks. Boohoo!

Pros: it plays music. i hope. great portable drive for windoz users. Paper-weight for Mac users.

great value if you're not a slave to ipod fashion
Pros: Great sound. Lots of storage for such a small device. Great price. Controls were easy and intuitive. Feeding it music was easy with included Music Match. If you're not a slave to fashion this is a great value.
Cons: Battery life seems a bit shorter than advertised - maybe downloading uses more. The DJ seems to have trouble with USB 1.1 - requires resetting with the paperclip. Upgrading with a relatively inexpensive USB 2.0 card solved the problem. Dell should add F

Far Exceeds the iPod in all categories
Pros: Great price, I saved $50 dollars not buying an iPod mini. It also has the 5 GB HD, 1 gig bigger than Apple's. Battery life as good as they say (10 Hours) and sure beats the iPod. Scroll wheel is at least as good as that of the iPod. The size is that of a
Cons: If you have a lot of music, and I do, be prepared not to use the DJ for the first few hours after the initial charge. Transfering 20 albums basically drains the entire battery. Since the usb is the power it can't run off of the AC while you are transferri

Awesome productu compared to mini
Pros: The dell dj has more storage then the 4gb ipod mini which is actually 3.7gb. It has way better features like deleting songs from the dj while listening and making playlists.
Cons: You should be able to put notes in the calender and have a clock that shows up while you are listening

Make's an IPOD look like junk
Pros: 5GB, Cheap price, 10 hours battery. This product is better than a mini ipod in almost every way, and is about 50 dollars cheaper. Dell should be more trusted than Apple anyhow.
Cons: Lousy scrolling mechanism.

Definitely a Thumbs Up!
Pros: Just received my pocket DJ for X-mas. It is my first mp3 player so I don't have anything to really compare it to. Out of the box, extremely easy to use. Simply charged it for 2.5 hours, then plugged it into my PC and download 360 songs (all I have so f
Cons: When I downloaded my music from my PC to the DJ, it didn't transfer my playlists. Either I haven't figured out how to do that or you are unable to. You can create your own via the DJ but haven't played around with that yet.

ipod mini's much better

iPod mini has some competition
Pros: the price is pretty good beating iPodmini by a good 50$...hold 5G instead of iPods 4G...and beats the battery life by and hour
Cons: not the prettiest of them all..doesnt have too many extras like games, but thats why its cheaper...and a little complicated to use at first

Poor functionality and bad support
Pros: Claims to hold a lot of music and have decent battery life.
Cons: Actually "crashed" with the "Shutting Down..." window open the 2nd time I turned it on. That window stayed open until the batter ran out - could not ever be restarted. Dell did not answer phone or emails after 3 days. iPod has much better interface.

Excellent MP# Player
Pros: I just received my DJ 5 and it is awesome. Very easy to use with no extra bells/whistles that are really not necessary. It has a louder volume than the iPods. It has a nice classy look too.
Cons: An FM radio would be nice.

Adequate and Cheap... Good combo!
Pros: My Dell Pocket DJ (5 GB) just arrived today, and I'm very content with what it has to offer. With MP3/WMA playback, excellent audio quality, and a standard media library its very simple yet still maintains great functionality. Sure, there aren't any bells
Cons: None, though I kind of wish it did have an FM tuner... And, who cares it it isn't an iPod? The iPod is the best, hands down - but if you're looking for value here's your answer.

This Owns the iPod Mini
Pros: Seriously, if you had a chouce of the iPod Mini or teh Dell Pocket DJ why would you not get the Pocket DJ? for $50 less you get MORE storage, a whole Gigabyte more, and longer battery life.
Cons: iPod Mini people are going to shove it out the door without thinking

Wow! So many comments about the DELL DJ before its even out in the market!
Pros: The number of people trying to give a review even before seeing the actual product in-person just shows how much this little baby is attractive. I'm getting this one for Christmas! Can't wait to give everyone a real usage review of the product!
Cons: Too bad they(DELL) don't have marketing money like the other guys... It does do the job of making people know about alternatives. I guess they pay there workers instead of paying the Madison Ave advertising people in NYC :)

Better than the iPod Mini
Pros: Why is this better than the iPod Mini??? 1. 5 GBs of storage compared to 4 GBs, Apple, get with it 2. 10 hours of battery life compared to 8 hrs, Nice! Now while I am jamming out iPod Mini users will be recharging! 3. $50 cheaper, so I can buy more music
Cons: Umm I cant honestly think of any, I would like the 10 hour battery life ot be expanded.

One step towards apple's shares!!
Pros: The new Pocket DJ is beautiful and functional, putting it on the spotlight for a mini hard-drive player of choice. At $200, the player's best feature is in it's price! Thats $50 less than the compettition!
Cons: Like it's parents the Dell Pocket DJ has no FM tuner, no support for not so popular formats such as OGG, and there is no option for in-line recording. Dell also bundles it rebranded music manager, Musicmatch, which is to say- trivial.
