The ChromeX lacks the high-end features of its slimmer sibling, but overall, it's a solid performer with good antiskip protection and only a few minor shortcomings.

Large, modern design
The ChromeX isn't nearly as thin as its pricier counterpart. In fact, at 5.4 by 5.8 by 1.2 inches, it's on the large side, but it does have a nice gray-and-black-matte finish and a smooth, round shape. We weren't thrilled that we could slightly jiggle the top of the unit from side to side, and we were disappointed that the battery door exhibits a similar flimsiness. But we should note that these small design flaws didn't cause any problems during our two-week evaluation period.

You get an in-line remote to handle all playback functions, but you'll have to take the ChromeX out of your bag to access more complicated features since the remote lacks its own LCD. As far as the interface goes, it's not quite as intuitive as it should be, even though the unit's display lists lots of song and settings information. We found ourselves wishing that there were a jog dial for navigating the menus, and we weren't crazy about the idea that many of the buttons have two functions depending on the length of time that they're pressed.

Manual is mandatory reading
After a bit of button experimentation and some studying of the manual, we found that it wasn't too difficult to locate songs by directory or playlist, set Shuffle/Repeat modes, change the EQ settings, and program new playlists on the fly. Holding down the Navi/Function button brings up the Settings menu, where you can make all sorts of tweaks, including choosing from 35 languages; activating Resume and Fade-In modes; and selecting among scores of other superfluous options that select users may find useful.

Like the SlimX, the ChromeX offers comprehensive disc and format compatibility, supporting different brands of data CD-Rs and CD-RWs that can be filled with MP3, WMA, and ASF files burned in the ISO 9660 formats. Future formats and file types will be supported through firmware upgrades.

Clean sound, no skips
When it comes to performance, the ChromeX does quite well. Our MP3s and WMAs sounded crisp, full, and free of hiss over our reference headphones. (iRiver includes a set of mediocre earbuds, but you can swap in your own pair and still use the in-line remote.) The company rates the player's antiskip protection at 120 seconds for MP3s and 40 seconds for regular CDs. These figures jibe with our test results, as we didn't encounter any skipping. iRiver should have included rechargeable batteries, but two AAs offer an impressive 16 hours of MP3 playback, though you'll get only 7 hours when playing audio CDs. However, the company did throw in an AC adapter for when you happen to be near an outlet. Our only performance quibble was that like the , the ChromeX's remote connects to the unit via a small, round plug that can come loose easier than the slotted remote connections that we prefer.

When all is said and done, probably the most attractive aspect of the ChromeX is its affordable price tag, which largely offsets the less than slick construction and interface. At $99, this MP3 CD player may not be a steal, but it's priced right, and if you don't mind reading a manual, you won't be disappointed. If you're working with a bigger budget, consider one of .

Great player if you are interested in carrying your music in CDs

Pros: Very stylish, never skips, great sound

Cons: A little bit big, no accesories available that i know

Review: I have had it for almost 3 years and I am really happy with it. If you don't have the money for a jukebox and have available space to carry stuff, this one is for you

Its worth gett'n for features it has

Pros: I liek the fact that you can download firmware to your PC, and load it into the player, does have a variety of features, that you can adjust, plus being able to use different music formats

Cons: The thing I dislike about the unit, is it can eat up batteries, well mine does , and no diplay on the remote, to prevent taking unit out to change folders or tracks, but even though you can adjust the EQ no actual bass boost

Good price, but you get what you pay for.

Pros: Worked beautifully for first month or so. Really had no problems with it. Cool remote, good headphones (kinda), nice functionality. The custom EQ was a nice touch, but wasn't very effective.

Cons: The headphones it comes with are the only ones that are even semi-loud. I forget the reason (I think I saw it in another review), but all other headphones I used were very quiet. If you barely nudge the AC adapter, it turns off. Incredibly low battery

Get it, it does what it should.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought it about 8 months ago, took it on overseas trips, draged it around , even droped it at the airport , it broke one of the lid's hinges (epoxy did magic),works fine for me, its not perfect, yes it does suck the batteries, they usually last me about 7-8 hours if I turn the lcd backlite off, (see you can do that too), yes the remote can come out accidentally, so watch it, yes you can move the lid sideways, but nothing happens it even keeps on playing, so who cares, I like the sound quality but i use Koss "the Plug" headphones they just totally isolate you from your surroundings if your ear canal shaped right hehe, the software is complicated, but that is the price of being able to adjust almost anything that you can think of, so read the manual and customize, I bought it for $99, now it is about $80. I mean you can't go wrong, at the time I bought the samsung's yeupp (or what) mp3 cd player returned it, bought philips' black colored (can't remember the model) sounded good, but no upgradable firmware. Which by the way gave me some problems (V1.20), they improved the battery life and buffer usage, but the unit stoped playing in the middle of the tracks for minutes, like it lost track or something and then suddenly on its own started to play again, so I just went back to v1.12. I also have to disagree with a lot of you, I think the unit does look cool (to me), it got thumbs up on looks from my friends in Europe. I dare you to show me something for $80 that has this many features and an upgradable firmware.

Can't beat the value

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Many posters have commented that it's not a bad deal for $99. Nowadays, the price has come down to $59 inc a rebate. Played well any and all CDs I inserted in it, mostly in the MP3pro format. Good sound quality coming out of my car's speakers, which is where I use it 90% of the time. I was deciding between this model and it's upscale brother, the imp350 which sells for twice as much. Realized that I already had much of the extra hardware the imp-350 comes with and the 150 don't (car kit, rechargeable batteries w charger, don't care for slimmer size). On the down side, it takes it's time to start playing songs when you search them with the FF and RW buttons.

You will NOT get a better $59 MP3 player!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought mine for $79 after initially settling for a $49 Memorex (which itself wasn't so bad). The Memorex was barebones -- no hold switch, no remote, not much of a display screen -- but a good buy for $49. I digress. Tired of feeling like I settled for the Memorex, I decided to read up on its closest competitors in price. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read up on the IRiver Imp ChromeX 150 -- at $79! Remote, backlit display, 16 hours on two AA's (for MP3's)! And those are just a few of the details!!! It's a little weighty, but what were you expecting -- an IPod? ;) The earbud phones felt cheap, but who the heck gives out earphones of any quality nowadays? I'm using my Sony Studio Monitors, and they're just great. (This baby has six different EQ settings, for gosh sake!) In about two years, when I can afford an IPod, I'll realize how inferior portable CD MP3 players are. But for now, I've found nirvana in the form of an IRiver IMP ChromeX 150. COST: $79 (J&R Music World) REBATE: $20 (mail-in) FINAL COST: $59. That's fifty-freakin'nine dollars. You have NO excuse not to buy one!

At last a good player!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've bought one mp3 player 2 years ago, but the main problem with it was the batteries life. It only worked for 2 hours with 850mAh rechargeable batteries. Now, one week ago, I've bought the Chromex player, and it is quite good, in my opinion. With 1800mAh rechargeable batteries, it works for hours (I use it for 1 or 2 hours a day and it continues working since 5 days ago.). The sound is quite good as well, and the design is awesome. The buttons seem to be strong. I recommend it, because of its price and quality.

great player at a great price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Before buying the iMP-150 I was using a RioVolt player that was not as well put together and idin't have as many features but costs twice as much. For the money this product is great and works well in the car with the opt. car kit you can buy direct from iRiver.

Good product for a small price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bought it a few days ago. Good quality, codec handles correctly high bit-rate VBR tracks. Just one thing to regret is that you cannot reload the batteries in the player (need an external charger). Firmware upgrade is a great idea, so maybe we can in the future use other encoding methods without buying a new unit.

Excellent Player at Great Price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was very impressed with this player. It's packed full of features, including firmware upgradable. Battery Life is impressive. I drove all the way from DC to Pittsburgh and back (about 10 hours), and only put a dent in batteries. The case and remote do feel a bit "cheesy". Recommend you don't drop it.

A great deal for a great player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The ChromeX is by no means cheaply built. The plastic feels solid, and the buttons are very well made. The lid's action is also very good, and the joint is strong. The interface is clean, but informative, and the list of options is much larger than that of any other player in this price range (and many more expensive ones). Skip protection is more than adequate, and sound and volume are great. Very highly recommended.

Great Player in a bad Package

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The player works great, has many features and sounds good. Why the thumbs down? The lid wobbles like it is going to come off when you push a button, the battery cover moves around like it is loose, when using an AC adapter the slightest touch shuts down the power (and that is right next to 3 important buttons) Also the display started to go bad after the first week (a line across the top of missing LCD lights. I returned the unit and upgraded to the imp-350 model - The same thing in a re-designed package.

Good budget player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just bought this a week ago and its pretty cool. There have been a lot of problems with it recognizing disks though. The first time i got it, i popped a cd-rw mp3 disc i made inot it, and it worked fine. Later that night it stopped working and would play not one cd i owned. It gradually solved itself (how? i have no clue) and that part scares me. Right now it is working awesome, but still has problems reading a disc, so i have to turn it off and put the disc in again, then it works. The design is ok, the lid on mine is kinda shaky and feels like it might break. The play/stop buttons on the player itself have become depressed from using them (i've only had it for a week)and it takes more to push them down, like they wore out or something :/. Overall, it's a really thrifty solution for portable audio, but if you have a bigger budget, i would suggest you stay away. There a lot better players out there!

May be good for PC users

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This player seems to really be a PC in disguise. It runs on a PC framework, whose firmware you can download and update. I have occasional access to a PC, so it's not so much a hassle to me. Mac users should not bother. In general, oftentimes it would fail to register discs i burned. When it did, it took a long, long time. It sucks batteries, big time. And if carrying in a bag, sometimes buttons are pressed by mistake. Nice features, and probably easier to use with PC stuff.

Great for the value!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bot the ChromeX, 3 weeks ago. It's perfect for traveling or for everyday use. I was surpriced by the battery life. It last and lasts like the duracell bunny no kidding. And it never skipped once, played every Cd I have even the crappy ones. It got alots of features. In summary if you're looking for a Mp3 player, and you want a good product choose ChromeX, trust me! and sorry Sony you'r one step behind..
