While RCA's 20GB Lyra HD Jukebox RD2820 may not be the most compact hard drive-based MP3 player and is missing high-speed connectivity, it sounds great and sports a sturdy design. But perhaps its most alluring feature is its price; currently, the RD2820 is one of the least expensive players in its class, and that should appeal to budget shoppers looking for an easy way to make their music collection portable.

The display is big enough to see plenty of menu items clearly.

A boxy, rectangular affair, the Jukebox RD2820 is approximately double the size of the iPod--5.1 by 1.0 by 0.3 inches--and weighs a pretty hefty 11 ounces. You'll definitely notice the Lyra when it's clipped to your hip, but thanks to the sturdy carrying case, it works just fine for listening to tunes while walking (but not running) or biking. Two joystick-style controls and four multifunction buttons make for easy menu navigation on the roomy, 2-inch, diagonal, backlit LCD, which displays plenty of detailed information, including the battery-life indicator that was missing from the 10GB RD2800.

The included car kit covers power and audio connectivity.

In the connectivity department, the 20GB Jukebox RD2820 comes with a USB 1.1 port, a headphone jack, an analog line-out jack, and a yet-to-be-used slot for connecting a docking station, which RCA may or may not release. The line-out jack provides unaltered sound to your home or car stereo. The player comes with great accessories: a 4.5-foot cord for connecting the Lyra to your stereo and a car kit, which consists of a cigarette lighter and a cassette adapter.

Although the Jukebox RD2820 works flawlessly once you set it up, initial configuration presents a couple of issues. After you load new files, either your PC or the Lyra itself must profile the device's music collection, pulling song information from your MP3s' high-end hard drive players--the profiling process draws out an already lengthy setup time. As a result, filling up the device takes about six hours.

The file-transfer speed might not be the fastest available, but at least the process is smart. Like Creative's Nomad Jukebox line, the Lyra syncs both to and from any PC, a feat that is as horrifying to record labels as it is convenient to consumers. Just use the simple LyraSync software to specify which directories on your PC and the Lyra you want to sync, and files transfer both ways until the directories mirror each other. You can also view the RD2820 as a removable hard drive inside My Computer--or on the desktop if you're using a Mac--and ferry MP3s or any other file types back and forth to any machine with the software installed. One important tip: When transferring tunes, make sure to reserve a few megabytes for storing the profile information; otherwise, the profile process will not be successful.

The RD2820 doesn't have an FM tuner, and it can't record audio or organize your contacts. But it does have everything that you need to play MP3s in a variety of ways; you can sort by artist, album, genre, or directory, or you can use a few different Random and Repeat modes. RCA claims that it's also possible to create 18-song user playlists on the fly, but we couldn't do it without connecting to a PC.

This device plays MP3s and MP3Pro, the next-generation codec developed by RCA. Download RCA's MP3Pro encoder, and you'll be able to store files at half the size of MP3, essentially doubling the RD2820's capacity.

RCA includes a healthy dose of EQ options with the RD2820.

Spinning our favorite test tunes, the Lyra churned out loud, clear, and hiss-free music. In addition, the bundled wraparound headphones delivered better sound quality than those that are normally included with portable devices. Six EQ presets, including one five-slider graphical EQ, augment the audio quality. One small annoyance: We occasionally encountered slight delays when toggling between different screens. RCA told us that this is because the hard drive doesn't spin until the buffer is nearly empty, a measure that conserves power.

The unit never skipped during extensive testing, but we wouldn't recommend treating anything with a built-in hard drive too roughly. This model's internal, rechargeable, lithium-ion battery offers improved life over that of the step-down RD2800, dispensing roughly 17 hours of power between charges. That's better than what the iPod and other hard drive-based players deliver.

We sent a 68.6MB album from our test PC to the RD2820's hard drive in 76 seconds, for a file-transfer time of 0.91MB per second. This is the fastest USB 1.1 file transfer that we've seen from an MP3 player, although we do wish that RCA had included USB 2.0 or FireWire support for even more rapid transfers.

Promises much, no follow-through

Pros: 20Gig,multiple format support, long battery life, resonable price (or so I thought)

Cons: Very slow download. Controls are touchy--either unresponsive or not responsive at all. Downloaded latest software from RCA web site--since then, can't connect to any computer. Bulky, heavy.

BEST MP3 PLAYER EVER!

Pros: Long battery life, big HD, Copy directly to driv ewithout having to use the stupid Music match that is bundled with it. VERY durable. I have dropped it (accidently) sooo many times and it just keeps on tickin'

Cons: Comes with Musicmatch but since you dont have to install it thats ok. I;ve had it over a year and have over 4400 songs and the internal profile no longer works as it can;t handle toe volume but the desktop profiler still works fien and How often do you ne

Not bad for the price, but a number of faults

Pros: Twenty Gigabytes!! - you can get thousands of mp3s, wmas or mp3pros on here, along with any other files. Battery life is considerably long, especially compared to the Ipod which lasts less than 8 hours, this lasts 15, and you can quite easily replace the

Cons: Relatively slow loading music files, and downloading onto the hard drive. However it is still USB so it is not painstakeingly slow. Just have to wait the first time you put the music on, then updating with new music little by little isnt too slow. MOST IM

BUYER BEWARE: Buggy product, shoddy product support

Pros: GOOD FOR CD CHANGER REPLACEMENT: I also want to say it is very nice to use the unit as a CD changer in my car. Finally my tape player has a use again!

Cons: BUYER BEWARE! I purchased this mp3 player and at first it worked just fine for less than an hour. SYNOPSIS: This is a neat toy but has become a very expensive paperweight after just a month. The product tries very hard to be a jukebox/second hard dri

good size HD for the money but customer support sucks

Pros: Large HD for the money.

Cons: The customer support is really bad. The company does not take responsibility for flaws that are obviously theirs. The transfer times were in excess of 3 hours

It's okay no ipod though

Pros: It’s built like a tank. But who wants to use a 1 inch thick mp3 player. So as far as people who want to carry it = not good. Great for data storage. For cars it’s great. Beats the radio, but the screen must become bigger. Sound was great and battery

Cons: Well got mine in March 2003 and now it is just a paper weight. The battery is dead. I think the headphone jack is dead too. Also the carrying case stinks. Headphones are good but people are right they don't sit on your head. Great headphones if you we

Freeze all the time, carrying pouch not very heavy duty

Pros: 20 gig is a lot of space. Can backup anyfile. MP3Pro support.

Cons: Freezes all the time, every two song had to reset the unit, have to use a paperclip or something, who carries paperclips when they are walking ? ANYWAY, the pouch broke down, the metal thing all used up the material. Had buy a "in-store" warranty, they

Replaced twice

Pros: This thing has a great interface, it does the job well, powerful built in amp.

Cons: I've had to take this back to the store TWICE in 8 months due to the headphone jack crapping out. My warranty expires in December, what do I do then? I'll have a $300 paperweight. Great.

RCA has not yet got it right

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am on my third RD2820, it freezes, needs resetting after it has been turned off for more than 1 hr. I have re formatted and loaded it from Music Match as RCA support told me, however it still screws up. I keep returning them for warranty but the new units still fail within the first few hours. I want my money back!!! Never get RCA

Great Companion !

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I must to tell you, his is my very first Mp3 player. For those that think that is bulky I'm agree that it's big and heavy but do not forget that a coin has two faces and you'll be feeling that is reliable, sturdy and very well crafted. Of course takes some time to fill 20 Gb of mp3 with USB 1.0 But, still a superb 'toy' that hold collections of yours favorites. Considering the price that you payed, you can't complain about the performance after all. Regarding company suport I must confess that I never call nobody instead of doing that I figure out how to do everything by my own. Doing probe and error I found my way. It's simple and easy to navigate. It crashed one time at the very beginnings and reseting wasn't a problem. I have mine since last December 2002 and I have already houndreds of houndreds of songs and still have 9 Gb of empty room. I'm glad to this jukebox. Brings me joy and fun. I tested the battery life twice and gave me 10 straight hours of music. Recording with MusicMatch is a breeze. I highly recommend this piece. Of course everything can be improved on time; for instance a USB 2.0 will be a PLUS and, it will be a better choice in the near future, if RCA gives you an option of a player/recorder. "Come on guys if you're reading this give us more fuel" Meantime, ENJOY what you have !! CARPE DIEM

Tough, great sounding player...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I spent a lot of time trying to decide which HD player to get. I really wanted an iPOD but couldn't stand the price, the Zen has lots of bad consumer reviews on CNET, and then a friend got me a deal on the Lyra 2820. It sounds great - even with the stock headphones, synchrinizes flawlessly, shows up on my computer as a removable drive (SWEET!), and is bulletproof (I dropped it 4 feet onto a metal girder and it got a small dent but works fine, the menus are easy to navigate. Issues? It has crashed a few times - just freezes but a handy pin resets the machine. Big - it barely fits in my shirt pocket and you sure know it is there. It is great in the car tho' - love having my ENTIRE collection with me plus a back up of My Documents! Sorting - you can't shuffle a genre - it wanders off after the first track or so - it always drills down to the artist. Oh well, the user playlists are easy to make. I would reccommend the player to anyone who is looking for one.

VAL-U

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great price, great unit. If you like to throw away cash, get an iPod. If you like saving $$ get this. It fits in your coat pocket or briefcase and really does the job. Warning, transfers are S-L-O, but do it over night or while eating supper or something.

Finally an MP3 Pro player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: MP3 Pro files are half the size of MP3, and sound just as good or better. This is one of the very few portable devices that supports this new format. While it's not as sleek as the iPod or Nomad Jukebox, the price is a bargain, and the 20 GB drive is like a 40 GB if you use MP3 Pro instead of MP3.

Great Product / Crappy Support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have owned not one but two of the Creative Jukebox units. I didn't buy a third because I wasn't willing to reward Creative for making a product that required three replacements in 3 years. The Creative Box was great -- but durability was severely lacking. I went looking for an alternative and for 30$ more than the 10GB Creative Box, I found the RCA Lyra 20GB unit. It had a steel case, rubberized grips and felt more sturdy as soon as I put it in my hands. I've never been a fan of the MusicMatch software and that hasn't changed one bit - it is very counter-intuitive and convoluted. Fortunately, the RCA unit simply showed up as a HD on MY COMPUTER in Windows XP and I copied all the WMA files I had from my Creative unit straight to the Lyra without skipping a beat; and WIHTOUT using the infernal MusicMatch software. The load time was considerably shorter and far more reliable than I had experienced on the Creative Box. I was able to load 1200 songs in about 40 minutes, which took about 2-3 hours on my last Creative Jukebox. The fact that RCA unit came with all the accessories you would want for home or car, and read the GENRE and ALBUM information I had assigned the tracks in my Creative Jukebox made me very happy. Interestingly, my Creative Jukebox had a weird crackle when using the cassette adapter in my car which I had attributed to my car's lousy electrical system. The Lyra however has no such buzz or noise at all. Overall, the only complaint I have against the Lyra is that the website for support "Lyrazone.com" barely makes mention of the 2820 and there are virtually no downloads for the unit there. (IE: XP drivers etc) -- nor mention of the need for them or lack thereof.

best i can find

Pros:

Cons:

Review: hey im a teen in highschool so to drop a couple hundrd dollars is a lot. I wanted to make sure to get the best possible product available at a good price so i spent several weeks on the internet reading many reports on each product. i looked at close to a hundred(lol i didnt even knew they made that many). I was mainly looking for a name brand i could trust, a good price, huge capacity, and quality music playback. I found all of these qualaties in this product. The only thing i didnt like is i had to order over the internet because they dont have them in stores yet. If u are considering buying a mp3 player this is by far the best there is out there.

Neat Gadget

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I actually purchased this unit to do backups of my file server. After playing with it the ease of use and setup for playing mp3's are amazing. Downloaded over 900 songs and played it on a trip to California from Kansas City. Bye bye FM radio. It comes with a cassette adapter and cigarete lighter adapter for automotive use. The sound quality is surprisingly good and it had no trouble playing mp3's in any format including VBR. The display is very informative but you have to be able to read small letters since it is rather small. I would say it is an excellent mp3 solution if you wish to store a large amount of files. As far as backing up my server it works great but is somewhat slow due to the USB connection. I REALLY like it.
