Note: More than a few Karma users, including some at CNET.com, have experienced hard drive problems or even failure after several months of use.
Armed with 20GB of hard disk storage, this beautifully designed portable music player rivals the Apple iPod in terms of ergonomics and ease of use--but at a significantly lower price. It boasts exotic functions not included in any other player, as well as one of the longest battery lives we've seen to date. While it lacks the iPod's intuitive no-moving-parts interface and the iRiver iHP-120's recording features, the Rio Karma's other strengths make it a better choice for many users.
Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click Like most HD-based players, the Rio Karma is intended for users who enjoy the freedom of carrying around thousands of songs (more than 300 hours of 128Kbps music) in a device small enough to clip onto a belt. Just as impressive is the device's tiny form factor and 5.5-ounce weight--less than that of two CDs. Although it's thicker and more voluminous than the Apple iPod, the Karma has a 2.7-by-3-by-1.1 inch chassis and a smaller footprint than even the Apple, and it's quite comfortably operable with one hand.![]() |
| The cradle features a clear, rubberized area for the player to rest while it charges, loads up on music, or sends tunes to your stereo. |
![]() |
| The back of the cradle houses stereo RCA outputs, a USB 1.1/2.0 port, an Ethernet port, and a power input for charging. |
The device's interface is a marvel of simplicity. It includes the obligatory Power, Volume, Hold, and Menu controls, but a highly responsive thumbwheel and joystick handle all other functions. The Karma's spacious 160x128 blue-backlit LCD can be customized to show different types of playback data (including fully functional analog VU meters), and most users will quickly master the device's intuitive menu system without ever cracking a manual. The display and controllers can even be flipped upside down for left-handed operation.
The Karma attaches to your PC using a built-in mini-USB 2.0 port and an included cable (USB 1.1/2.0); placing the player in its chic, blue-illuminated cradle/charger adds a choice of either USB or Ethernet connections (making this the first Ethernet-compatible portable MP3 player). The cradle also provides stereo RCA line-output jacks that can be connected to powered speakers or to a stereo sound system.
The Karma's liberal selection of bundled accessories includes an AC adapter; a carrying pouch; a set of high-quality Sennheiser MX-300 earbuds; and USB, line-out, and Ethernet cables. The only items missing from our wish list are an in-line remote and a form-fitting carrying case--with belt clip--that could protect the device and allow it to be worn outside of the pocket.
The Karma's rich feature set includes all the functionality we've come to expect in a hard drive-based player. Like many other products in its class, it lacks an FM radio tuner, an audio line-in jack, and a voice recorder, but it compensates with an impressive selection of music-playback and organizing features. You can search for tracks by album, artist, genre, and year of release, or you can generate playlists on the fly by simply double-clicking song titles in any of these lists. Unlike the iPod's similar playlist feature, the Karma's lets you save and name the list for later playback.
In addition to a bookmark option for saving your spot, the Karma offers a comprehensive selection of repeat and shuffle options, a five-band equalizer with presets, and the ability to smoothly cross-fade between tracks. We loved the Rio DJ function that can be programmed to automatically build custom playlists by analyzing your personal playback history; it then plays the songs back with cross-fades--somewhat akin to having a real DJ spin your tunes for you.
The Karma's excellent Windows-based Rio Music Manager 2.0 software combines a straightforward interface with a competitive selection of autosynchronization, music-playback, ID3-editing, playlist-creation, and file-transfer capabilities. It can also rip audio CDs to fixed and variable bit-rate MP3 and WMA, as well as the open-source Ogg Vorbis and FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec). The latter is especially prized by audiophiles since it sounds exactly as good as the original CD, at a smaller file size. Music Manager 2.0 also includes an auto-update function that lets you upgrade the Karma's firmware with just a few clicks.
Rio also throws in Rio Taxi software, which lets you use the device as a portable hard drive to transport data files and music tracks between any PCs that have the app installed. In January 2004, Rio plans to release an enhanced version of RealOne designed specifically for this player, as well as Macintosh software and drivers. (Linux and OS X users can use the Ethernet port to transfer files to the device, but those operating systems are not officially supported.)
According to Rio, the Karma produces a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 95dB at its very loud power output (about 60mW per channel at 16 ohms). This translates into more than enough power to cleanly drive most full-size dynamic headphones to top volumes. The bundled Sennheiser MX-300s sound great through all registers, especially in the bass range. But like most buds, they can be tricky to fit into some listener's ears and provide only moderate isolation from external noise. Sound improved when we used our Shure E3c reference headphones.
As you'd expect, the Rio Karma's 480Mbps USB 2.0 interface produced blazing file-transfer speeds. On average, it took about 20 seconds to download a 100MB collection of nine music files to our test unit, for a file-transfer speed of 5MB per second.
Another strength is the Karma's long-lived rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Rio claims that the device will run 15 hours on a charge--about twice as long as the iPod. Our tests confirmed this.
Getting the Karma's network interface to work took a little more effort than we would have liked, but once it was up and running, it purred along. With the device in the cradle and connected via Ethernet, we were also able to perform file-upload, synchronization, and device-management functions on the remotely attached player. But the same files transferred more slowly than expected, at 0.53MB per second (about 10 times slower than via USB 2.0). Rio plans to eventually use this same interface to add the ability to stream music from a player to other devices attached to the same network. The company will also add a remote-control Web interface so that you can control the unit from any networked PC while it's attached to your stereo (making the device a de facto digital audio receiver). At that point, the device's Ethernet compatibility could become a major asset.

The best Mp3 player to date
Pros: Crossfade, Open-Source, True gap-less playback, Battery life.
Cons: Rio went out of business, no accesories, I'm still waiting for a manufacturer to make a suitable replacement.
This is the best Mp3 player out to-date. I can't wait for the company that scooped up Rio's I.P. to sell the chipset to another manufacturer who wants to keep the Karma's feature set alive.
GAP-LESS, CROSS-FADE, GREAT BATTERY LIFE.... THIS PLYAER TRUELY ROCKS!!!
And the codec is open source, Yea!!!

Audiophile quality output, affordable price, and its not an ipod.
Pros: Interface, beautiful indigo backlight, high output rating, rigid body, affordable, unique design, ethernet connectivity, nice cradle, 5 band parametric and vu meters let one get great sound, battery
Cons: slightly cumbersome, occassional BUT NOT FREQUENT!! lockups that are fixable, smaller hard drive but can be upgraded, not a lot of bonus and customizable stuff, not a mass storage device, discontinued
try to get one off ebay while you can
http://ebay.com
Some day we'll be looking back on these. Ive never had a problem with mine. We'll look forward to the day when some one can top the karma's quality. If you want video, get a friggen portable dvd player and watch it on a 12 inch screen. dont go ipod. be a little different. give it a chance. if you dont like it try some one else then. just dont feed apple your money. for 400$ you could have gotten a laptop. for 100$ you could get a karma. Mp3 players are to play music. theyre supposed to be something affordable. Let your rio express who you are. Be unique, dont follow. Get the history making, best DAP out there. Plus then you can bash on your buddy's crappy sound quality and how much louder your rio is.
The rio karma, something to remember, something unique, it's a rio.
Highly recommended. Again, give it a shot, acquire one while you can. you'll be glad you did. They aint gonna be around forever. that's 5 rios for me and 400$ less for apple. Top that apple. I love you rio!
REST IN PEACE. Rio Audio.
Peace out.

Nice design & software but unreliable construction
Pros: Menu, soft controls, base unit with RCA and CAT connections
Cons: construction, dead at one year
After trying to add more music one evening, it turned into a toaster. Warm to the touch, it now only makes a spinning clicking sound. Given the price of newer players, do I throw it away or try to have it repaired? Don't put yourself into my predicament. Pass on this one unless you get an extended warranty.

JUNK JUNK JUNK
Pros: NOTHING GOOD
Cons: Third one that has broken, this one had a burnt plastic smell after downloading music. Probably a HD issue. Horrible quality, the red control knob broke after a few months of use. Complete CRAP

Do Not buy this player
Pros: There are none
Cons: Hard drive broken, no refund, no repair after 90 days, no work after 6 months
The worse part is that the company does not fix for a reasonable fee after 90 days. I think that is abysmal. This is the USA. We are supposed to stand by our products. $250. for a piece of garbage that did not work after six months. I hardly call that anything but abysmal.

Great Idea, Bad Product
Pros: Sound quality, intuitive interface, powerful software, amazing battery life
Cons: Chunky and heavy, extremely unreliable
I have a huge library of WMA and MP3 files from my personal CD collection. On the first night, I synced around 200 songs with no trouble. I started playing them and found that the Karma recognized about 10 of them as "Bad Tracks" and either locked up, or skipped to the next track(s).
I read all the support pages, official and unofficial. I tried deleting the "Bad Tracks", and then re-syncing the same tracks at a lower bit rate. Same result! I don't understand how some songs just won't play on the Karma. They do on my old 2GB player.
About two weeks into it, I was really growing attached to this thing. Despite its refusal to play about 5% of the tracks I send to it; It's got some great features, like the EQ, "Entertain Me", VU meters, battery life and more.
However, I started having to carry around a safety pin which I used to reset it throughout the work day. Then, one day, it was sitting on my desk, doing what it should for about two hours and I noticed that there was no music. The song was showing and it was in play, but the VU meters weren't bouncing and the time was not advancing. I reset it and when it came up, it shut off. I recharged it the next night and turned it on to see a blank backlit screen. The screen stayed backlit and I could not turn it off.
I went to their website, reinstalled the latest update and it worked again for a few hours, then blank screen of death!
Now, it plays in the cradle after resetting it so long as the power supply remains connected when you first turn it on. I will look into shipping it off, but at riovolution.com, there are stories of unusually long wait times. So, I'll replace it, then get it fixed and sell it right after that.
Maybe I won mine in a contest, but it was the new retail version and the asking price is high enough that you should expect it to simply work and continue to work well.
One other note, I baby my stuff and even bought a neoprene case for it at Target. It already has minor scratches on its soft plastic back just from laying it on my desk at work.
BTW: One of the other guys who received one is also going through my original Karma symptoms.
If this was reliable and lighter, it would almost be the "perfect" Portable DAP. RIO defiantly has an impressive sound, easy library management and so many things going for them. Unfortunatly, this looks like their only jukebox size DAP, so I'm looking to other brands like iAudio for a replacement.

Absolutely Awful
Pros: Good, when it works
Cons: After 8-9 months it quit working
Rio customer support is about as useful as the player itself. My first detailed description of the problem and the myriad of troubleshooting I'd already attempted was greeted by a standard troubleshooting e-mail. There were a couple things I had not tried, so I did them with no result. My player still didn't work. I e-mailed Rio customer support again detailing my problems and their trouble shooting e-mail and was greeted by another canned e-mail from another so-called technician. I crafted another highly detailed e-mail and have sent it to them twice ... they now do not even acknowledge my e-mails. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER RIO PRODUCT AGAIN, their products don't last & their customer support is non-existent!

What use is the features if hardware is garbage?
Pros: Loseless codec support, Battery life, Network Connection
Cons: Horrible hard disks, amateurish software
Luckily I spent far less than £270 (retail price in the UK) since I bought it tax-free in Japan.
Features are great - support for flac and ogg vorbis makes it a heavy weight contender to overhyped mainstream garbage iPod.
The cradle features a network connection using which you can manage tracks on the player and the battery life is a dream.
However, and it's a big however I would advise you NEVER to be seduced by the features. Main reason for that is that the player is notoriously known for having faulty hard disk. It can die at any time, without any interraction on your part!
About 3 months after purchase the player's hard disk died. Physically died. It could not cope with a large MP3 file.
The support was efficient and helpful and replaced the unit relatively quickly.
However, the hard disk died again about a month ago. Imagine my frustration when I have been told that it was no longer covered by warranty and could not be replaced.
If your product has been repaired/replacemed, all you will have remaining is 3 months.
Additionally, the RIO Karma as a product has been discontinued. 1,5 year's lifespan????
What does it tell me?
Buy a Rio product again and you will be paying for the manufacturing faults, because Rio will not take the responsibility.
All in all it's not surprising that Rio has lost the market they once dominated.

Bad drives, bad support.
Pros: Great capacity and software. Nice player when it worked.
Cons: It only worked for 3 days; Rio has been non-responsive
Well, finally after more than a month and a dozen phone calls and e-mails, I got my replacement player. It was a scuffed up refurb unit but it seemed to work. Until I tried to adjust the volume. The buttons don't work at all! Nice. So I'm now trying to decide whether to go through shipping it back and waiting for another Karma, or having them send me a 5G Carbon (they won't even pony up with a 6G). Even though the Carbon holds far less and costs far less, it might be worth it.

Pros: Small, great sound, cheap
Cons: Easy scratch screen
I was suspicious of this thing in the beginning with people saying the hard drive breaks easily. When it first arrived i used it for a couple days and the hard drive did have some problems with crashing and stalling for a while. So i formatted the thing completely and moved all my stuff on it again, and up untill now it works perfectly with no more problems. My suggestion is just don't go jogging or anything with it, I usually use it when i walk to school or do homework in the library. But other than the hd freezing that one time, i think this is a great product at a low price. This things over the overratted ipod anyday.

Great DAP! Offers MORE Than Most!
Pros: 15 hr Battery life, 3-Sec Crossfade, Smart Rio-DJ Mixer, Customizable EQ, Supports Various Formats
Cons: Shoddy Build, Skips Sometimes, Freezes
This player is a sort of 'beefed' up version of the iPod. Where the iPod offers pointless PDA-like features, the Rio Karma OFFERS MORE in the AUDIO DEPT!
There are tons of goodies for the music lover,.. Customizable 5-Band EQ lets you tweak the audio however you like it (for bass lovers, you won't be disappointed!!) Supports various audio formats, such as MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV etc. You get roughly 15 hours of playback for when you're on the go. The Rio Karma has a cool "Rio-DJ" feature that is smart and useful when you want to play mixes at a party. Play by year, genre, when the last time you played the track, your top 10-100 songs etc. All in all, it's an awesome player as long as you are careful with it.
This player is not designed to be used for jogging with, as long as you hold the player in your hand, it will be fine.
There have been tons of complaints, dealing with HD failures (this is entirely from factory defects) or resets. If you take proper precautions, your player will last for a long time until there is an update!
This is indeed a model for all other DAP manufacturers. If you are tired of hearing about the iPod and want to be different, the Rio Karma is just for you. I am very happy with what I've got, I still use it to this very day.

Ex-iPod user who loves it!
Pros: Battery, Sound, display and changeable-interface
Cons: Less-intuitive design than iPod
Picked up the Karma for $150 (no rebates) and got twice the capacity of my old iPod.
-The interface takes a little getting used to and is not as intuitive as the Ipod scroll wheel. BUT I like the ability to redefine keys and change the orientation of the display.
-LCD Display is fantastic since the font gets smaller with larger titles, etc.
-Software is simple and non-intrusive (i.e. it doesn't try to become your favorite media device)
-Sound is far superior to the iPod, I have a lot of songs that would "bass-out" on the iPod at any eq setting, but play fine on the Karma. Also can you say CROSSFADE!
-Dock is a nice addition.
-Can't use iTunes music store, but who cares?

Buyers Beware!
Pros: Does Ogg, FLAC, WMA, etc. the only one on the market that supports as many codecs
Cons: Reliability!
So, thank God for replacement warrenty programs. I exchanged it, same thing happened, only in less time. Exchanged it again, same thing. Again and again. 5 times in total!!!! The last time it locked up I traded in for an iPod. I've transcoded a lot of my music files from Ogg to MP3 - that really sucks. If you check the forums at www.riovolution.com you will see LOADS of stories like mine. I realize they are not endorsed by this site, but it is more buyer feedback.
In summery, this is a great device to hook up to a home stereo. Don't take it with you anywhere, not even in the car - you might ruin it! This is not a solid portable device!

Great until it died
Pros: Massive storage, great sorting, easy software, long battery life
Cons: Won't start up!
However over time it develop issues, first hanging up so that I was forced to reset it and reformat the player. This is fine, you sometimes have to do this with a PC too.
However recently it stopped booting all together, and RIO has no interest in helping me out. Their tech support was very courteous, but not helpful and said they'd give me a refurbished replacement for $124!!
Now I realize why it only comes with a 90-day warranty. I should have bought the extended warranty from Best Buy-- however I think even tho I hate Apple, I'm switching to iPOD because they offer a better standard warranty.
I'd recommend this product if it just sits on your desk all day and you really don't use it. Otherwise, STAY AWAY.

Excellent Player for the Price
Pros: OGG / FLAC / MP3 / WMA - Excellent Sound
Cons: Shape and Lack of Accessories and Quirky Interface
1. This player sounds great, the built in EQ is excellent, and the volume is plenty loud.
2. The player plays more useful formats than most.
3. The cross fading feature is excellent.
4. I purchased it for $199 with a $50 rebate (Net $149) so it was 1/2 the cost of the iPod 20.
Negatives
1. The player is fradgile, and easily scratched.
2. The warranty SUCKS, way way below industry standards.
3. The interface is good, but it could definitely use improvements. Rio if your reading contact me I have specific minor suggestions that could make the interface substantially more friendly.
4. No accessory market like the iPod. I whish there was something like the IceLink for this player.

King Karma Rocks! For those who LISTEN to Their Music.
Pros: I had a limited amount of money to spend. I thought long and hard about the decision to buy the best mp3 player. Read reviews and went to different forums to educate myself. Found a ton of info. Commercials about the Ipod were everywhere. Where do I start
Cons: My only gripe is that the face scratches pretty easy. But if put a plastic screen protector, presto chango looks good as new. Even old scratches don't show anymore.
