It goes without saying that when it comes to portable electronics, smaller is almost always better. Newly acquired Rio's 1.5GB Nitrus breaks the latest size barrier by being the first MP3 player to feature an integrated 1-inch hard drive, as opposed to the 1.8-inch drive found in devices such as the Apple iPod. We wish that the Nitrus were cheaper than its current list price ($199), which is the same as the entry-level 10GB iPod's. But it's a slick player that will be worth the cost for users who want better battery life, are looking for a smaller package, and feel that 20 hours' worth of music is plenty to listen to on a given day.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more.

At 2 ounces and 3 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches, the Rio Nitrus has design specs that sound more like those of a flash-based player than a hard drive-based one. (Unlike the official specs, these measurements were taken at the largest points on the device's curved chassis.) The player's outer rim is rubberized, making it easier to grip and less vulnerable to damage if dropped.

In terms of style, the Nitrus presents a clean, slick, mini radar-detector-like appearance, with a shiny black front and a bare minimum of well-placed buttons that make it simple to operate with one hand. A jog dial on the upper-right corner handles navigation on the backlit LCD, which has a high enough resolution (96x64) to display the advanced menu system found on previous Rio products. A red laptop-style multidirectional control in the center of the front panel handles playback and some navigation functions, while a sturdy Hold switch on the back of the player prevents accidental button activation.

No in-line remote or carrying case is included (in fact, all you get is the player, an AC adapter, and Sennheiser earbuds), and neither is offered as an accessory at this time. Since the device is meant to be toted in a pocket, this isn't major faux pas, but a thin, protective case could prevent scratches from keys and other in-pocket objects.

The Nitrus's small, light design makes it suitable for jogging, but jostling the player while it's in the process of reading from the hard drive to the flash-memory buffer can cause your music to skip and may ultimately damage the device (it has 90-day warranty). Rio claims that it is indeed suitable for jogging--and it might be--but you're probably better off with a high-end flash player if you're looking for an athletics-oriented unit.

While it lacks extra features such as voice recording, an FM radio tuner, and line-in encoding, the Rio Nitrus has everything you need for MP3/WMA playback and more. Among its onboard features are a five-band graphic equalizer with moving high-resolution sliders, as well as six EQ presets; nine midtrack bookmarks (great for audiobooks); resume and shuffle/repeat functions; a date/time indicator; and a stopwatch.

Rio Music Manager is a polished, powerful tool for transferring tunes to the Nitrus.

For loading the player with tunes, Nitrus comes with impressive syncing software that makes its 1.5GB capacity actually feel more like 10GB, so long as you don't mind connecting the device to your PC (sorry, no Macs) every few days. Rio Music Manager 2.0 offers a plethora of powerful automatic and manual syncing options. Not only can you transfer individual songs, you can sync specified playlists, albums, artists, or genres and even set an exact percentage of new music to send to the device upon each syncing session. Multiple profiles let you set up different syncs, which can be manually executed later with the click of a button. For instance, you could delete your French-pop playlist and specify that Rio Music Manager transfer '70s jazz onto the player in its place. The well-designed program has too many other outstanding syncing tweaks and stylistic touches to list here, but suffice to say that the company has broken new ground with this software package.

A note about connectivity: While the Nitrus does not show up as a removable drive, it comes with a simple app called Rio Taxi, which allows you to transfer data files of any type to the device's hard drive and subsequently onto another Windows computer running the software.

With its new line of portable players, Rio made a concerted effort to offer superior battery life, especially compared to the iPod. According to company specs, the Nitrus's internal lithium-ion cell lasts up to 16 hours--an impressive claim that our testing verified.

In terms of sound quality, the Nitrus's squeaky-clean 93dB signal-to-noise ratio competes with that of the best-sounding MP3 players. It puts out 8mW of power per channel, which drives the included Sennheisers to deafening levels and provides ample power for higher-end headphones, such as our reference Shure E3c, to reach high volumes as well.

Connecting to a USB 2.0 port, we transferred a playlist with 100MB of music onto the player in 72 seconds, for a transfer rate of 1.39MB per second. Understandably, transfer time was slower over USB 1.1, at 0.45MB per second.

Worst Experience EVER!

Pros: It's shiny

Cons: Breaks!!! Worst customer service, no carrying case, no clip.

Review: I've had countless headaches with this product and this company. First is the $20 you have to pay if you have a question, so that they can tell you that you can't do anything about your broken MP3 player.

Bought one for my cousin and one for myself. After about six months, they BOTH broke!!! We had to send it in for repair, pay the shipping costs and all. His took about 3 months and mine took 6 months! And that's after fighting with the people that do repairs and even the owner who told me to go screw myself.
After receiving the player, 4 months later, broke again! With the same "upgrage" bug.
Payed again for shipping, and they told me that it's too costly to repair, that they will send me a credit for $75! I spent $175! or why don't they just give me a new one? or a refurbished one?
I'm afraid to call because they might send me to hell again.

An okay player

Pros: good size, price is decent, accessories are cheap

Cons: no belt clip, menus are poorly organized, battery starts losing power after a year or so

Review: I've had this player for close to two years. I did not have the initial problems that many people here have had-- it's worked fine up until now, though I've noticed the battery has been lasting less long, and it did turn off suddenly on me the other day but I turned it back on and it was fine.

This was my first MP3 player, I got it for using primarily at the gym, but also for on the bus (I have a long commute). I was dismayed to find there is no clip on this-- I bought a case with a clip on ebay for $6 but it doesn't hold it very tightly and it's kind of awkward. The joystick thing sticks out too far and if you don't have it on lock it's easy to bump it and pause or jump songs. The menu is layed out in a way that does not make sense-- the "playlist" section is very last instead of towards the top. Oh and somehow recently I got a weird (permanent)squiggly mark on the LCD screen. I have no idea how that happened.

When making a playlist you can't add songs-- if you add a song to an existing playlist the software automatically deletes all the other songs on the list which is incredibly frustrating.

I don't have a huge music selection but I have found 1.5 GB to be insufficient-- I spend a lot of time deleting music to make room for new stuff. The Rio is also not compatible with all online music services.

The good things about it are it is one of the smallest ones I've seen, the price was decent ($100 on ebay) and it has held up pretty well for the past two years-- I'm definitely upgrading to something with at least 4GB soon-- probably either the iRiver clix or the Ipod nano.

Disappointed with my Rio

Pros: Sounds quality great, longevity between recharg great

Cons: Can't upload more songs, have to PAY for tech help

Review: Loved my Rio. I use it when riding my bike and going to the gym. It lasts a long time between recharges. I've had it several years now. The size is great and it stores alot of music. HOWEVER, I went to load more songs in it last week and the rio got stuck in the "waiting" mode. I attemped to connect to my Rio Manager and get a note that says "Failed to connect to player, Data block failed" I went to contact the Rio Tech Support and find they want $19.95 for EACH time you need them. If they can't help you they will offer to send a credit toward the purchase of a new Rio.I have already paid $150 for this little machine. So, I take the chance of calling and paying for tech help and them telling me they can't help me. I don't want their credit, if my machine is not fixable then I'll buy another brand with FREE TECH SUPPORT. I loved my rio but it is dispensible and I can buy another brand. I've not paid for help yet and am debating whether to do so or not. This displeases me very much. So, think twice before buying this rio. My son's rio says it needs to upgrade but when we have tried that nothing happens. So, there is a total of $40 the tech people could make off us with the exception that my son bought a Zune. I may too... It's a shame that Rio is doing this to it's customers.

Why to never buy a Rio

Pros: small size

Cons: It dies and customer support is $20

Review: So, this company wants to charge me $20 to "give" me customer support. That's right, you PAY them to tell you how to fix their defective product. Don't support companies that do business like that.

Works but has its downfalls

Pros: Looks great

Cons: Has a few bugs and control issues. What accessories?

Review: This is a great mp3 player but is just doesnt have the support that i need from an mp3 player. There are no cases for this player and that is a big deal because most people like to use there players on the road or at the gym. Its durable i've droped it a few times and its still ticking but it has reset or froze up twice for no reason at all. The software is easy to use but i would like a way to delete my songs without the use of a computer, which this doesnt have. This isnt an ipot or even close so dont expect that and no matter what you do dont pay over 100 dollar for it cause you might feel a little cheated in the end

The Rio Nitrus Is A Very Well Priced Mp3 Player

Pros: Well Priced, Worth It's Money

Cons: Simple, No Bells And Whistles

Review: Bluntly, the Rio Nitrus is a very nice budget mp3 player. I bought mine nearly a year ago and it has lasted. Although it doesn’t have all a fancy features others have, it is reliable, and worth your money. I will try to the best of my ability to deliver an unbiased, accurate review.
The design of the Rio Nitrus is a fairly decent one, given was one of the older models. However, don’t let this fool you. It has intelligently placed designated volume controls on the left side. The downside of the new mp3 players is, that if you are navigating through a menu and don’t want to lose your spot, you can just turn down the volume without ever changing the screen. On the right side of the Rio Nitrus is the menu button as well as the scroll wheel. To get to the main menu screen, you have to press the menu button (if it isn’t already obvious). The mp3 player can be operated in every way possible without actually using the scroll wheel. The only thing it is used for is to navigate through the menus faster than using the 5-way navigating mini-joysick – or whatever it is called. The scroll wheel can be pushed in to select. The 5-way joysick can be pressed up, down, left, and (bet you knew this was coming) – right. The fifth way is to actually press the joysick in. This is actually a really good idea, because it serves as a way to add more ways to get through the menus. To get through the menus, you can press up or down to scroll. Additionally you can hold it down to keep scrolling. To select, press right or the center. On the play screen press up to start/pause the song, down to stop, left for previous, right for next, and hold left/right for fast forward or rewind which gradually increases speed. The downside to the 5-joysick is that it can collect dust or other uncleanable junk right under it, though this is an almost invisible flaw. This is probably just my falut, because I stick it in my lint-covered pockets. There is a hold funtion (locks all the buttons so you can safely put it away, confiedent it won’t change) on the back which surprisingly is a good place for it. Also, a tip of the hat to ability to choose to lock all the buttons, or all with the exception of the volume and/or just the pause button. I go with the exception of the volume which has enough resistance to not accidently get pressed.
The smart people at Rio put a rubbery coating around the edges of the whole Nitrus that can’t really get scratched or damaged. It is also a genius safety precaution to solve the problem that the average clumsy person drops everything sometime, someplace, and you never know if it will be on concrete.
The Rio Nitrus comes with a set of awesome earbud headphones (in my opinion, I don’t know what kind you like), a power adapter for a wall outlet, and a mini USB 2.0 cable, which transfers about one song in almost two seconds. The only downside is there is no beltclip, armband, or case. They don’t exist so you can’t get them as accessories.
The screen is okay for a low priced mp3 player. It has a nice blue backlight. The resolution isn’t bad, but not praiseworthy. It is what I expected. The top line on the play screen shows the song title, the line below shows the artist (in slightly smaller font), and the line below that shows the album (in the same font as the artist). This, in my opinion is a great setup, however, say the album is something like ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack’, it won’t fit all in the line. It will pause with ‘The Pirates of the Carib…’, then scroll everything by, like some of the old computer screensavers. The small font, coupled with black and white, not fantastic resolution makes it very difficult to read. The same goes for the artist, however the track title is in a larger, bolder font, and is readable. The design was above average for a model that didn’t copy anyone else’s. Way to go originality! (I think that all the Rio mp3 players use the same user interface).
The features on the Rio aren’t numerous, but satisfactory. It has 1.5 gigbites, which holds a nice collection of songs, not necessarily a rack of CDs, but the best songs off each CD. I found to rip songs off of a CD, using Rio Music Manager (the outstanding, bundled software), change the bitrate (under options) to a lower one, like 96kb/s (I think the default is 192kb/s). This slightly decreases the sound quality (I’m not sure the human ear can actually tell the difference, I sure can’t), but dramatically makes the file size much smaller, thus enabling you to fit a heck of a lot more songs on the Rio Nitrus, which I got to about 400 songs with a tiny bit of room left for a few more songs. This strategy for making small file sizes works for all mp3 players and CDs.
The Rio Nirus has a built-in stopwatch that is as accurate to the hundreth of a second. It can also store multiple times and find the difference of the last two, and the average of all of them. Another handy feature I’ve never seen anywhere else is the bookmarks. You can save any point in history and jump right back to it, if it is a favorite song or a ceratin album with shuffle on. It saves the song, how far into the song you were, and what the playback settings were (repeat 1, all, shuffle, or none). You can store multiple, but not an infinite number of them.
The Rio Nitrus comes with a CD that has the computer software, Rio Music Manager Software. I happen to like it because of multiple reasons. First, it starts up very quickly. It periodically scans your music so you can make sure you always have your library up to date. It shows your music already oragnized under the tabs: albums, artists, genres, songs, playlists, and the search tab. Rio Music Manager allows you to edit files right on the Rio Nitrus, if it is plugged in with the mini USB cable. The Rio Nitrus comes with 12 songs already, only a few which I found worth listening to, but that counts for something. Rio Music Manager has playback controls, but are saddly primitive, as well as CD burning capabilites. Interestingly, the ripping technology is nice, but the burning is only possible if you are copying a CD, so you cannot make a custom CD, or at least I’ve not been able to.

I bought mine at ubid.com, for a ridiculously low price of about $60, thought you might like to know that.

Groovey!!!

Pros: Multitudes of Songs!

Cons: Rio needs to create a carrier for it!!!

Review: I did extensive studies on the Rio, and got it for a great deal. It holds a vast amount of music and now have a dock for it, which comes in very handy while traveling. The sound is really nice, especially when using Sony's earbuds. It was difficult to find a carrier for it, Rio should make one for it!!! Looking for one now for my daughter!

Perfect for those who don't actually want or need 40GB for mp3s

Pros: Ample space, sleak design, lightweight, durable, cost-effective, informative screen, battery life

Cons: unmountable

Review: I bought a rio nitrus a few years ago and loved it. I have around 2GBs of music total, so the size was attractive. It's got just enough space to fill it with songs that I actually want to listen to right now. If I get bored with the music, I sync it up and switch it up. The screen is big enough to display all the information you need. Navigation isn't exactly second-nature, but once you get the hang of it, it's helpful. Also, the battery usually takes an hour to charge and provides several hours of play time.

I lost my nitrus before Christmas last year, so I had to buy a new mp3 player. I didn't even consider buying anything else...I bought another Nitrus. DEATH TO IPODS.

Do not buy this, lasted 5 months

Pros: no pros to this rip off

Cons: "upgrader" bug, stops working shortly after your warranty is up

Review: I bought this on an impulse because the price seemed right. However, I got even less than I paid for. After 5 months, it stopped working, and all I have now is a screen that says "upgrader". Tried everything possible to fix, but to no avail. Thank goodness that my credit card offers buyer protection, so I might get money back. Cnet should be rating this as a zero, given how many people have lost their money on it.

Worked for a few months

Pros: easy to use

Cons: lousy warranty

Review: I was ticked off to find that Rio only offers a 90 day warranty and two months after the warranty it dies. We've called Rio and went through the troubleshooting. It didn't help. They said they would send an email with an RMA number, but as of this date nothing. I suppose Rio doesn't have much faith in their product if they are giving you a measly 90 days. You can return anything to a store within 30 days, so actually, they are giving you 60 days. Everyone else is giving a year warranty. I will never buy another Rio.

Decent player...with few problems

Pros: Easy interface, software

Cons: Diminishing battery life.

Review: This is the first mp3 player I've owned. After initially returning it to Rio within the warranty period because their upgrading software ruined the first one, I have had it for almost a year without any significant problems. The interface is fairly easy to use, the music quality is great (I bought other headphones), and transferring files is made simple with their software. I haven't experienced any of the other complaints listed here regarding songs skipping, the player shutting off, or getting stuck. And the limited size has only just recently become a problem for me (as I don't need my whole music collection on a portable devise). All in all, I think it is a decent, solid player, however, there are a few gripes as well. I do notice the battery life, though long, is somewhat inconsistent and is starting to deminish. And while you can easily create playlists when connected to your computer with their software, if you later try to add songs to an existing playlist, the program will simply remove all the previous songs on that playlist. This means if you ever want to add new songs, you have to create a new playlist, which is annoying. Because of the diminishing battery and limitation of space (about 350 songs), I am now looking at getting a new player. However, this is a decent mp3 player for anyone who wants something simple, easy to use, with great sound quality, and solid battery life in a small compact size.

This Things Rocks

Pros: Easy to use, transfer, & navigate. Size is just right for the average music collection and can hold about 450 -500 wma files. Has long Battery life. It is just a awsome piece of equitment!

Cons: No case, but can easly find a digi cam case that will fit it no problam.

Review: There is nothing I do not like about this product. I bought it from overstock.com for $81 and it came with a two year warentee. My friend has a Rio Carbon and tried to get me to buy one. even though the carbon is bigger the nitrus was easyer to navigate and use. I think the nitrus sounds better. Even though the carbon has a lock feature the one on the nitrus is easyer to use. The 16 hour battery is long enough and the size is enough to keep you occupied for longer than the battery keeps going. It Charges quickly and if you are smart you just charge it at night when you are sleeping. Even though the nitrus is a little smaller than I would like it to be, but after using other players this one is just for me. It hold 500 or more wma files for at least 25 hours of music, and along battery. So more over after resurching for a while and testing other player not to menchon the price of $80 + shipping and if not on special $10 for a two year warentee. If you are thinking about buying it and are swayed by the reviews that it breaks easly just buy It from overstock and get the extended warentee. Also just be carfull with it, it is a fragile piece of equitment, and you bought it why would you want to mistreat it.

An expensive paperweight

Pros: Fun and easy to use while it lasts.

Cons: It only lasts long enough for the 90 day warranty

Review: I loved this player. I read about the "upgrader" bug after I bought it, but it didn't seem to apply to my player...until it did...fresh out of the (90 day) warranty...gone...tech support suggested all the things I had already tried, then told me it needed replaced. Thanks for nothin'. Goodbye Rio, I'll never buy another player from you again...because you knew this would happen, and you still keep selling them...goodbye forever.

Good only if I could make it work with no problems

Pros: good sound quality, compact

Cons: keeps crashing everytime i try to add music

Review: The sound quality is great. I bought it refurbished for $80. Cheap, but with allot of trouble. It also takes forever to transfer my music from my computer to the player. I do not suggest it, since warranty is too short. I bought an i-pod mini for my mom and it is a much better product if you asked me. You get what you pay for. Now I have to contact customer support. Wish me luck, i'm going to need it!

Great Player!

Pros: Cheap, Rechargable Battery, Good Amount Of Space

Cons: Needs a radio, it could stand to be a bit louder

Review: I got mine for like just over 100$ so I think for the ammount of space you get per hundred dollars or so it's cheaper then an iPod. Like for the same money you get one of the iPod's that has 500 megs less memory and doesn't even have a screen. I think 1.5 gigs is about the perfect ammount of space and since it can be had at a good price I'd recommend it to anyone. I've had mine almost a year now and the battery is still good and it hasn't broken or anything.

The Absolute WORST Customer Service

Pros: Small, Lightweight

Cons: Just goes into "re-format" mode

Review: My player was displaying re-format on the screen. After doing what the on-line support suggested, I tried to contact customer service. USELESS. I asked how I could send in my player to have the tech people re-format it for me, and they kept telling me that to replace the unit was $79 and when I sent it in, don't forget the $79. I only bought the player four months ago and paid $169 (without tax) and now I have to pay for the privilege of having a broken player? I could have/should have bought an IPOD. I don't want a replacement, I want the one I have fixed. I am sooo frustrated.

Pros: everything about this player SOUND QUALITY A+

Cons: the earbuds I got some sony headphones

Review: I just received my Nitrus today i ordered it from ebay for the cheapest price and also because the seller i bought from ebay offers a EXTENDED warranty that last 1 full year thats the main reason i bought the nitrus and the software is easy.

worked good for 4 months....

Pros: small, held 300 songs, mp3 mostly

Cons: poor customer support...short warrenty 90 days.

Review: I will definately check the warrenty when I purchase another mp3 player. I bought this for my teen daughter who loved it. At first it kept freezing up and would have to sit and reset. Finally it just froze and we went throught the steps of troubleshooting it and finally called tech support. I was told that the hard drive was shot. Since it was out of warrenty we would have to ship this one to them and they would send us another one for 75.00. With a 30 day warrenty and it would be refurbished. I was very dissapointed. I will check warrenty information much better next time.

very handy player

Pros: sound quality + size

Cons: File storage is not a direct process; organising files not that easy

Review: Rio nitrus is a very handy player with excellent sound quality. Its small size and light weight is a big plus. UI is very friendly and navigation is very easy.

Organising the music files is not that straight forward. Music manager that comes along with this player does not provide import option for playlists which is a definite minus.

doesnt support direct file transfer. to store and retrieve files, you should install rio taxi s/w that comes in teh CD provided. not a flexible option

Worked good... Then...

Pros: Great size, good navigation, looks decent

Cons: Advertised battery is 16 hours. I got 9.

Review: I bought this. It looks decent, has nice simple software. Navigation is super easy. The advertised battery life is 16 hours though I got just 9 hours 22 minutes. (Timed with the built in stopwatch). Also sometimes the battery would just die out after being charged without use. I took it back to Futureshop and they were nice and gladly let me exchange it, even after lots of months. One suggestion when buying mp3 players, always get them from big stores like futureshop. Though they might cost more then online, you have piece of mind you can exchange it if there is a problem. I exchanged it for the Sony NW-E99 (1GB). I am happy with it. Sony lets you use atrac3plus, which takes mp3 files and makes them really small. It is good quality in 48 kbps compared to mp3 in 128 or 192. The only thing is it takes awhile to convert the files (though my computer is only win ME, 700 megahertz celeron with 192 mb ram it took me an hour and a half to convert 100 songs. Some of them 6-12 minutes long.), and its not that conveinent to have 2 versions of a song on your computer. You can delete the mp3 version if you want, but you might outgrow the sony player and need to get one without atrac3plus. I have been able to fit 500+ songs on the 1 gb flash player. Plus battery life is 50 hours for mp3, 60 for atrac3plus, or 70 for atrac3. If you need more then that (dont get an ipod... Just dont.) get an iriver, creative or sony player. Oh, and always search for the user reviews on google on any mp3 player before buying it.

short term fix

Pros: simple design, easy use, nice software, low price

Cons: stops working, annoying bugs, scratches easily, sound could be better

Review: I first bought this item when it was the top-of-the-line MP3 Player. At first, it seemed to be ok, but within the first 24 hours it froze and wouldnt restart without pressing the reset button. Also, a little white speck has popped up on the indside of the screen (overnight) and I have no idea how it got there. It doesn't make a huge difference, but it does interfere with the field of vision slightly. I've now had the player for about 9 months, and the problems previously listed were the only ones I'd been having, so I didn't regret the purchase too much. Tonight I tried to hook it up to my computer because I wanted to update my selection, but it will not communicate. I've tried updating, everything. It refuses to recognize it. I guess I'll have to get a newer, better one after all. I can't recommend this player, but I can recommend the Creative Zen Touch instead.

Very Unimpressed

Pros: It's small. It is 1.5 GB. Playlist capable. Sounds good.

Cons: Low battery life. Software is confusing. "Skipping" during play unacceptable! No case!

Review: I purchased this item on eBay. After 3 weeks of use I began to see that it was not holding a charge as it had initially. More alarming was the fact that songs began to "skip" during play (even while player was motionless on a flat surface). The software was a bit confusing. I guess I had assumed it would be a "drag and drop" type of effort. But it was a bit more taxing than that. You could creat playlists, but getting songs in the order you would like was a huge pain. And there is no carrying case for this thing. You either carry it in your hand or your pocket which I didn't not like. Hey, but it sounds good! I'm sure you can do better than this item.

C-Net Editor DIssappointing

Pros: Small, Light, Good Software

Cons: No FM Radio, No HD, Problem with RealAudio Legal MP3 Downloads

Review: I was very dissappointed with this player. The lack of radio and the hard drive are big issues, and obvious. The biggest problem with the hard drive lacking is that if you wish to take music from a computer that doesnt have the software, you can not. Also, I had to return the first one i bought because even after a firmware upgrade, it would "skip" like a cd player on songs I had downloaded from RealAudio, but was fine for songs I took from CD.

Now, less than a year after I bought this MP3 player, it is not working. The MP3 player is making a lot of clicking sounds and uploading is a major problem. This is one MP3 player I do not recommend. Too many headaches, not enough features. For your money you can get a bigger hard drive and more options and be a lot happier.

Good if you just want an MP3

Pros: It can hold a lot of music and is very small.

Cons: Easily get's scratched, doesn't come with case, and you can't find a case online.

Review: I used to have one until the Rio Carbon came out and then i sold my nitrus to my brother. But it was a good mp3 player and i got good use out of it. But i noticed that it get's scratched very easily and you can't find any cases for it online, or anywhere on earth. So overall, it's good for the people who can't afford the carbon, or just want an MP3 player.

Fruit flies live longer

Pros: Didn't last long enough to find out

Cons: Product life of 5 hours should pretty much sum it up

Review: I found the unit to be aesthetically appealing out of the box. The instructions suggest charging the player for five hours. Unfortunately, after charging for 5 hours the player died and wouldn't turn on again. There is some humor to this situation. I examined Rio's website for troubleshooting assistance. In the FAQ there is a specific question addressing what the user should do if the player doesn't turn on. It suggests turning the player on and using the reset button (if the player is turned off the reset button does nothing). Does anybody else see a problem with that suggestion?

As discussed by other reviewers, Rio requires the owner to pay shipping charges and wait approximately 1-4 weeks before getting the player back in working order (with no guarantee or extended warranty to protect from the same thing happening again). Why hasn't there been a lawsuit against Rio yet?

A couple of bugs but works fine

Pros: lightweight, sleek, compact, good sound quality, large enough HD for people who don't need 5000 songs in an mp3 player

Cons: HD is too sensitive, medium battery life, no belt clip

Review: Ok, I've actually had my Rio Nitrus for a solid 8 months of constant use. I've bought it blindly without reading reviews because my last mp3 player was a RioOne and that little thing lasted me 2 yrs, and it's been through a lot. To have something last that long, I don't think I could go wrong with the Nitrus.

As far as I'm concern, I'm pretty happy with my nitrus. I've read bad reviews, but people fail to take in mind that a HD based mp3 player is not something you should carelessly toy with, by shaking it around, dropping it, sitting on it, stepping on it, whatever. You paid good money for a product, then take better care of it.

This product is basic and to the point. It has a nice digital screen that has the name of the song, artist, volume, battery life, etc. The software is easy to use, and you can make playlists. I love music, but I don't like having to browse through 1000 different artists or 5000 tracks to play one song. I'm a "one song on repeat forever" type of listener, and nitrus is just big enough for my music needs without making me feel guilty for not using the remaining 19.5GB if I were to have an iPod.

The cons, there are a few. First of all, after about 6 months, many said their nitrus simply died. Well I'm proud to say that mine has survived that deadline and works. Only about the same time, I've noticed that it made a unsettling shrieking noise in my earplugs if I started running with it, it prompted the HD to shake, so it messed up the song I was listening to. Luckily the shrieking can be stopped by pressing stop. So I try not to shake the HD. That's what I dislike about these new mp3 players, HD drives are highly sensitive to movement, so you have to be really careful how you handle it, while a flash-based memory card was way more durable, you could shake as much as you want and it's still play fine. On occasions for some unknown reason, it may bug during a song, but nothing serious.

Battery life was longer when I first charged it for the first time, but now I'd say the battery life is about 5-6hrs of music and takes about 3-5hrs to charge.

The final and very minor gripe, no belt clip!! I think a belt clip feature would've been great because the nitrus looks great. But I can understand that due to the shaking involved when walking could disrupt the HD.

I've used the Rio300, the RioOne and now the Rio Nitrus, all 3 products were great. I love Rio, and though Nitrus is more sensitive than my flash-based Rios, I think it's still a great product if you take care of it. This product is not for very active people or people who put it through durability tests! Because remember, this thing isn't made of steel, it's made of plastic.

Pros: Simple, compact, look good, quality sound, good battery life

Cons: Bad battery quality, sometimes, it will simply not start

Great product if 1.5gb is enough space

Pros: I have had the rio nitrus for about 4 months, and it is a good product. It holds up great, and is very small; barely making a bulge in your pocket. At 2 ounces, the Rio is also very light and unnoticable to hold. The equalizer is also pretty good.

Cons: The Ipod's click wheel is much simpler to use than the navigation system of the Nitrus. Also, it only holds 250 mp3s if they are very low quality. If you think you can use more than 1.5 gb, your really better off buying an Ipod or similar product with m

Pros: Small and light weight.Extremely easy to load music (good software..."holds moe then enough music") and well designed unit which makes it very easy to use..! Sounds great. Very good battery life!! Solid, well built. Props to Rio!

Cons: The only possible thing I could think of is that they should have made the LCD screen a touch bigger to make it easier to read.. but that's being picky. The unit is killer!

Creative's Muvo2 is better

Pros: My sister has a Nitrus. I really like the design and feel of this mp3 player. It is small and comfortable. The interface is very intuitive and it was actually a pleasure to run with...

Cons: However, I was disappointed with the necessity of installing drivers and Rio software to access the HD on the Nitrus. That disadvantage alone prompted me to buy a Muvo2 for myself. I couldn't be happier with the Muvo 2. I can use it to transport files

Pros: I upgraded from a Rio S50 to the Nitrus. I think this is a great MP3 player I love all types of music I have a little over 300 songs on it which is fine for me. It's perfect for trips one player with all your favorite songs no more carrying around cd disc
