The Rio S10 is essentially a less expensive version of Sonicblue's Rio S50. This model includes only 64MB of memory, but that can be expanded with an SD or MMC card. The S10 also lacks the FM tuner included with the other models in the line, but it offers the same smooth design and reliable performance.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click
When the player is in the case, it's well protected but a bit harder to use.

Measuring 3.1 by 2.2 by 0.8 inches and weighing 3.2 ounces with the battery, the S10 is understated. It sports a slightly trapezoidal shape, a light-blue front, rubber sides, and a backlit LCD with a rounded aesthetic. Expanding text bubbles and graphical sliders, controlled via the large, round, four-way toggle button on the front, enable easy song and menu navigation. The cable of the included earbuds barely reaches from your belt to your ears, but that's fine by us since we don't like wires swinging around everywhere we go. A padded, black, faux-leather case protects the S10's already durable body and attaches it firmly to your belt. Occasionally, the buttons on the player don't line up precisely with the holes in the case, but you'll still be able to operate the S10.

Unlike some other MP3 players, the S10 comes with a USB cable that actually reaches from the back of a computer on the floor to the top of a desk. If you don't have a hub and must connect the cable directly to your computer, this will save you a lot of aggravation. The S10 is Sonicblue's budget option, so no voice-recording features are available. To add bass or treble while playing MP3 and WMA files, you can access six EQ presets manually or with graphical sliders. You can bookmark your place in a file--great for audiobook fans. The standard repeat and shuffle features are included as well. The S10 comes with only 64MB of onboard memory for digital music storage, but it has an MMC expansion slot for adding more.

The included RealOne software does a fine job of encoding MP3 files at bit rates of up to 320Kbps (compared with the free version's 96Kbps), and the clean and simple Rio Music Manager transfers files to the player. Mac users will find that iTunes handles both functions with aplomb.

You also get a trial version of MoodLogic, which fixes incorrect song information in the ID3 tags of 100 MP3 files before asking you to register. While the step-up models in the Rio S series have a removable AA nickel-metal-hydride battery, the S10 comes with a regular alkaline battery. However, if you buy your own nickel-metal-hydride battery, you'll be able to charge it directly within the unit using either the USB connection or the AC adapter (available separately). Sonicblue claims the alkaline AA has a 35-hour life, and we got just less than 20 hours from a nickel-metal-hydride battery--both very respectable times.

Rio Music Manager does a fine job of transferring songs to the S10 without getting in your way.

When we listened to music through the included headphones, the S10's sound quality did not knock our socks off but was definitely acceptable. Our test headphones improved the sound, though perhaps not enough for serious audiophiles with exacting standards.

The S10's file-transfer speed is a relatively decent 0.42MB per second, meaning it takes about three minutes to fill the 64MB capacity.

My Rio S10 has an FM Tuner

Pros: Very reliable over time

Cons: No upload, Not wireless

Review: I owned the Rio S-10 for several years, have never had any problems with it.

I'll buy a newer model whenever they come up with a bluetooth download model. it's a pain to always have to dig up the cable to download or change the music.

and with built in bluetooth would be nice to have wireless headphones, get tired of messing with wires everywhere.

Very nice for 1st generation player, and from what I've seen there hasn't been a second gen yet it a keeper.

I Love This Little Sucker, It Does What It Needs Too

Pros: Easy To Use, Small, Bastery Lasts Forever

Cons: Need to add your own memory, and not so well with rugged use.

Review: I got it for my b-day one year. I've had it for about a year and a half, and the thing still runs. The only problem is that ever since i added my 512 MB card (from 16-25 songs to 194 to 236)it seems to have problems like not detecting it or freezing when i want to turn up the volume. Of course that doesn't go with out saying that where ever i've gone that thing has been with me and so its taking a few beatings. But it still works and the programs that puts the music on there works fine.
If you want a player where it shuffles your music, then buythis one becuase it works great for that. If you want to listen to entire albums, then i would look for somthing bigger personally, considering that if you even want songs on there you need a card. Its great for walking to and fro and car rides.
I must say though that i am wanting a bigger player, becuse there is not as much memeory as you would like, its more for just some songs and not whole albums (which is what i want).
I probally sound like one huge contradiction, but thats becuase I LOVE IT for what it does, but like any body, it has its shortcomings, and those are what sre to be addressed.

Great Reliable Player

Pros: Amazing battery life, durable construction, nice case w/belt clip.

Cons: Only 64mb of built-in memory, no hold button (have to go into the menu), probably too big for the market nowadays.

Review: All in all the Rio S10 provides excellent sound quality in an affordable package. There is a recent firmware upgrade which enhances usage of the player even moreso. The biggest problem I found with this player is the memory which is only 64mb. However, it does support up to 1GB of memory which I cuurently fit 236 songs on. Of course an extra gigabyte of memory will raise the price of this affordable unit unless you can find a SD card on sale or get one off e-bay. I rated the S10 a nine due to its durability (mine has had its share of bumps while using in the gym), its amazing battery life which is rated at 30 hours, its great sound quality, and its ease of use. If you can find one of these still kicking around somewhere for a reasonable price I highly recommend it.

A great player . Especially with newer firmware

Pros: Sound, Battery Life, Features.

Cons: no fm radio but I knew that before I bought it.

Review: I have had the rio s11 (128mb version of the s10) for over a year and it has been problem free and am very happy with my purchase. The key is to go to the rio website and download the latest firmware. This firmware improves
and adds more features than the previous version had. With the improvements, you would be hard pressed to find a better flash memory player. Look for one if you can find it.

Excellent Small, reliable machine

Pros: Bought for $26.00 on Ebay, updated the firmware in a few seconds, it works great! Its my first MP3 player. Very impressed.

Cons: Why do people complain about the memory? Did you not know the memory amount before you bought it? Learn to read and then you wont be suprised. I put a 512 card in this and it recognised it fine with the updated firmware

Great Price and expandable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my 3rd MP3 player. Owned Diamond Rio PMP 300 and the Intel Pocket Concert. I'm way over the honeymoon stage with MP3 players. They all look cool until you drop them. All I want now is memory and low cost. The S10 is low cost but comes with limited memory (64Mb). The key with this player is the expansion slot which according to Sonicblue is expandable to 576 Mb with an MMC or SD. For the money, it is much more cost effective to buy a cheaper player and add memory (memory prices will only go down over time). I also looked at the Pogo ripflash plus and the Rio s50. I decided to go with the S10 due to cost. Support from Sonicblue is not that great but I had only called to ask a question before I bought the player. As long as you dont have to talk to a human being, this is a great product. Also, look at thier refurbished units on the sonicblue website. I was skeptical about the quality and condition but I bought a refurbished unit and it looks and feels brand new, with the same warranty, and $40 cheaper. Installation was a breeze. No MusicMatch support so I had to install (and become accustomed) to Real One. Rio music manager is ok but I'd rather use a commercial quality player like musicmatch or real player.

Great Player, Great price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my first MP3 player experience and I am happy with my player. It is very light and very portable. It uses only one battery and has a long life. Has a good display and is no problem at all to operate. Downloading is a breeze and deleting/adding files takes only seconds. Pretty cool carrying case considering the price. Drawbacks: built in memory is too small. Think about buying more. Great if you are using it on a rather quick outing (walking, working out, around the house) but any lenghth of time beyond that and you'll run out of tunes. Also, the on/off slider is difficult to engage. Headphones are not the greatest, but better than none at all. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. It's cheap..it's easy..and it works well. No problems

However, instead of providing me with the appropriate warranty information, they have decided to send me through an endless loop with their technical support, who are hopeless when contacted whether by phone or email. Best Player I've Had So Far

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bought this player about 5 months ago and had no problems with it until now. Used it for about 8 hours a week and only changed the battery once in the whole time, easily the best mp3 player for battery life out there. It does support SD memory cards as you can download a patch for them on the sonicblue website contrary to what one review says. However, I dropped my player one too many times and it just froze up and turned off every time I tried to play a song from then on. I recommend buying yours from somewhere with a warranty, I got mine from Best Buy with the replacement plan and am awaiting the check presently, wish I could buy another one of these but they don't carry them anymore. But when it stopped functioning correctly I called Rio support first and the people who tried to help were complete morons, they told me about 15 times that the problem was the battery when I had tried 4 different batteries, until they finally offered to fix it, but I figure it's time to upgrade to a larger capacity player anyway.

I use Windows XP and it was recognized and downloaded, deleted and re-loaded songs without a single problem. The software works fine as well. I have to thank the above comments for giving me the heads up on the firm-ware update :) I'm downloading it right now so I can get the bigger memory upgrade as I wasn't to enthused about the MMC only option. But, I was aware of that when I bought it, so I can't complain about it :)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For your money, this player is a pretty good option, easy to use software and quick upload speed from a PC(Windows XP), decent display, and great battery life. I however was lured in by the possiblilty of expanding the memory all the way to 192 MB...good luck. The only cards that the S10 supports is strictly MMC only. If you think, sure but SecureDigital should work as well, no it doesn't. The drawback here: MMC is obsolete, it isn't made very much anymore, the largest card I could find is 64 MB and the format is not secure. Bottom line: For me no way, I want a player that will give me 4 hours of music. For others who use it only during workouts, shorter periods of time, should suit you just fine. If you

Fit's The Bill

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Got the unit for Christmas. at first I was disappointed because I wanted the S35S, but I figured that this one will do fine...especially when I found out it can be upgraded to more than 329MB. Sound is good, even with WMA files. And with that much memory, I don't even miss having an FM radio. The case and belt clip are sturdy and I rigged an armband for when I go running. the no-look controls are a blessing. Very VERY happy with my Rio so far...

Firmware Upgrade Supports 512 MB

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When my wife gave me the S10 for Christmas, the first thing I did was cringe (trying not to show it) because I wanted a minimum 128 MB flash memory MP3 player and this unit is only 64 MB internally. Officially, the S10 supports a maximum of 192 MB (via MMC expansion card). However, some research on the Net dug up a user review that claimed the S10 could be firmware upgraded to 1.60, which would 1) allow it to recognize SD memory cards (not just the officially supported MMC cards) and 2) up to 320 MB of memory. I checked the SonicBlue Web site (www.sonicblue.com) and found that the firmware upgrade actually allows the unit to recognize 512 MB of total memory! Thus, I will be purchasing a 256 MB SD card (the largest capacity at this time) and enjoying a total of 320 MB of storage in the unit. The firmware upgrade went smoothly and as described in SonicBlue's online support documents. Upgrading to the S50 (about $50 more expensive) gives you 128 MB internal memory, a darker body color, an FM tuner, and a NiMH rechargable battery. For me, the S50 is not worth the extra money now that I know I can max out at 512 MB on the S10 with the firmware upgrade. But if the FM tuner and a single NiMH battery (relatively inexpensive, even with charger) are worth it to you, go for the S50. Other positive observations: 1) Very small form factor, 2) backlight in display, 3) stopwatch (great for runners), 4) equilizer, 5) bookmarks, 6) user-configurable timeouts for the backlight and power save features, and 7) clock. What it doesn't have: 1) USB 2.0 support and 2) display doesn't include encoded bitrate of current MP3 song. But for just over $100, this unit is a good value IMO. The bundled headphones stink, of course. They are earbuds which fall out easily (very frustrating during exercise) and don't have a great frequency response. I personally recommend HeadRoom at www.headphone.com. Don't shortchange the money you've spent on your MP3 player and all of the time you've invested in building your MP3 collection on a cheap pair of headphones. HeadRoom offers excellent technical support, a large catalog of superior quality products, and good prices. They also offer some models not typically available thru North American resellers (like the excellent Sennheiser PX200). These guys are hardcore headphone geeks who can recommend the most appropriate headphones for your budget and tastes and then sell them to you at a good price.

Not disappointed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I researched the limited selections for MP3 players in the under $200 category for a christmas present for my wife. She is an avid jogger and carrying a CD player is just annoying. Well, the S10 won out. I plugged in the software last night and everything was a snap. Digital One rips the songs off your CDs easily. You just pop in a CD and a message comes up that says this music is not in your library, do you want to copy it now. How easy is that for the computer illiterate? Rio Music Manager has a top/bottom interface. Top is the music library on your computer and bottom is the songs on the MP3 player. To transfer you just click on a song or multiple songs and then click transfer. Just that easy you have music on your MP3 that's ready to go. I found the MoodLogic software to be worthless. The earphones look nice but you will want to upgrade. They can't handle the highest volumes but my $10 Sony's can handle it just great. Sounds louder and better than my portable CD player. Anyway, I read all the reviews on here and they were very helpful so I thought I would share my thoughts as well.

Very pleased with player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bought one to jog with and belt clip case works great. Software easy to use. Intuitive controls and large main button make operating a breeze. Also, battery life is quite long. Haven't owned other mp3 players, but I did a bit of research and am very happy with this one.
