"Unbelievable design flaws spoil what could have been a great product."

    by mjkphoto--2008 on October 29, 2005

Pros: Good sound for listening to iPod or radio. Small footprint fits almost anywhere.

Cons: Absolutely terrible as alarm clock. The alarm volume rachets up to level 19 (extremely LOUD) in about three seconds. No way to set alarm volume. The remote lacks menu button for full iPod control.

Summary: This is one of those products that just makes you mad. What could have been a break-out product turns out to be riddled with unbelievable design flaws.

    1) Remote lacks Menu button for full iPod control. If you want to select specific albums, genres, playlists, you've got to do it from your iPod. Dumb!

    2) The product jokingly promotes what it calls a "gentle wake-up" feature, wherein the alarm volume slowly increases to "gently wake you up." Well, the volume rachets up to level 19 in about three seconds. It's alarming alright! Absolutely terrible design.

    3) An ear-piercing beep, reminiscent of a smoke detector alarm, sounds off each time to press a settings button. This is another incredibly stupid design flaw, not to mention that it is painful to listen to.

All in all, this product has been nothing but frustration from the moment I set it up. It teases you with what it could have been, an outstanding product, then terribly disappoints you with idiotic design impairments that anyone with a brain would nix in the testing phase.

If you're looking for an iPod enabled clock radio, the iH5r is NOT FOR YOU.

How do you set the alarm volume? I've looked everywhere and i can't figure it out. I'm starting to think it can't be done.

Your review is based on erroneous info. If you don't want to read the product's instructions (which clearly tell you how to set the alarm volume), then please don't write product reviews. It's not fair to those of us who take user opinions into account before purchasing a product.

This product is quite decent. It's not quite up to my personal design standards, but for the price, it is an exceptional buy (it even has a digital tuner for those who are annoyed by alarm clocks with manual dials that never quite tune in the station).

I don't know about yours, but mine will alarm up to the loudness level that I have it set at on radio on setting. Maybe you need to read the directions again. You set alarm volume by standard volume setting, sleep volume by hitting sleep setting, then holding button on back and adjusting volume with wheel. The alarm will sound @ the level you have your normal sound setting at.

this was bought for me as a birthday present -- we both were quite excited -- but has turned out to be a terrible frustration and a disappointment. the iPod alarm volume is absurdly loud (which their customer service confirmed can't be changed) and is just flat-out painful to wake up to. we have thought of every workaround and been unable to accomodate this design flaw and so will be returning it. we are both completely bummed. i am sad to recomment that you stay away from this product until they upgrade.

It's really too bad that these guys blew it when they left out a way to control the alarm volume. I like everything else about this product, and would say it is a great deal for $99 at Costco (including remote) but the blaring alarm is a real bummer.
