"Capable on paper: Fickle and unreliable on my desk"

by chiamami on March 26, 2006

Pros: Modem & Wireless Router in one unit

    Cons: Doesn't work reliably

Summary: Bought the Actiontec from Verizon to consolidate my current system of a separate modem and router into one piece of equipment. The Actiontec didn't work despite assiduously following the enclosed directions. The pdf instruction book gave little in the way of troubleshooting options. Verizon phone tech support didn't find a solution and, a week later, an onsite tech from Verizon required three hours to fashion a semblance of a repair. We were happy that at least broadband was available. The Verizon tech confessed the gateway was "touchy" and might require occasional reboots. He was right. It has required 3-4 power-off reboots daily and the wireless function (working with my laptop on the table ten feet away when Verizon's tech left) stopped working the following day. Not one thing had been done to the laptop or to the configuration of the Actiontec.

Save your time and exasperation. We are turning this one back into Verizon ASAP.

A lightning strike blew out my whole Verizon FIOS (fibreoptic) broadband. Verizon came the next morning and replaced everything because everything blew, including the router. Great service. A friend had had this Verizon system installed the day before and said he had received a new "super" router.

So when they were about to replace the D-Link with another D-Link, I asked about the "super' router. The tech pulled one out. No that I think back, his expression looked like he was going to say something, but I guess it's not kosher for them to knock their equipment suppliers. It was this Actiontec. It is very fickle, I have had to reset to the factory default to connect to the internet twice (in one day) and a Mac that I use around the house and pool that worked seemlessly with the D-Link can't reach the internet. It has more range than the D-Link, which needed a booster to cover the other end of the house and pool area, but the booster was only $50.

Anyway, I will ask for a D-Link replacement tomorrow.
