"Consolidates file storage for any small network" on by lschweiss
Pros: Automates downloads, even from bit torrent. Runs linux.
Cons: No support from OpenWRT yet. (5/06)
Summary: For any small network of two or more computers this is a great tool.
Once support is in OpenWRT its possibliities are endless. -
"Unfinished product and over-featured" on by gohaleg
Pros: It's nice on the outside and it has a nice wireless range for it's class. Provides NAT, downloaders, and other good stuff. It can also store data.
Cons: The firmware is highly unstable with loads of errors. It is poorly organized, not every thing works as expected. I never got the torrent downloaded to work properly. Highly unpolished software.
Summary: I have this product over a year now and my experience with it is terrible. I am used to working with linksys (or CISCO) routers and this is just wrong. It has too many features, and most of them are buggy.
Don't get me wrong, the hardware is good, but the software needs to be really enhanced. Here are some examples: It renders differently from browser to browser, there is a static 30 seconds wait when a major setting is changed, the interface is poorly organized with "add" button on top of things to add, NAT tends to fail sometimes...
Yesterday i accidentally unplugged it without turning it off, it's settings automatically reset to it's factory defaults. -
"good, but might run into trouble with vista" on by emailpr
Pros: solid built.. easy interface and set up
Cons: Vista, Norton Internet Security
Summary: I bought this router and immediately was able to use the ezsetup wizard in windows xp partition of my computer and install it without any problems.. but in vista.. I had to go through hell.. first there is a tweak that needs to be done in Vista to allow network lan manager setting to allow LM and NTLM.. (you'll know what these are when you are ready to install it).. secondly.. even after that.. for the longest time, I couldn't map the router hard drive on my vista system.... and FINALLY... I figured out that was because Norton Internet Security firewall was blocking it.. so make sure you first disable firewall permanently... restart your computer.. then the drives will be mapped... then turn on firewall back again.. and now you probably won't be able to access the router drive.. in that case vista tells you what port to allow in norton settings.. once you do that and restart again.. it works fine..

"Great features, but needs some firmware work." on by trogdorix
Pros: HTTP server, FTP server, 160GB networked harddrive, imbedded bittorrent dwnlding
Cons: some features are glitchy
Summary: Some features, are either glitchy or not well programmed--such as a keyword URL blocking feature. it can block Example.info, but will not block Example.info/blah/ .
the HTTP server has a crappy included web layout, and the user needs to know CGI to replace the page, instead of relying on good old html.
Asus's tech support sucks, but other websites can tell you how to fix what you screwed up.
otherwise, the router is amazing, and i expect that the firmware will eventually be updated to get rid of other miscellaneous problems.
