    "Excellent router with great range"

    by ssavoy0329 on January 16, 2008

Pros: Fast, Better Range, Good firewall, QoS

Cons: Initial setup requires you to use setup CD, Internet goes out frequently when using DMZ

Summary: Due to many daily power outages at my home, the Dl-624 finally called it quits. I though the 624 was a good router, so it was hard deciding which one to buy next.

Setup of this router was easy-but required the use of the CD for the first time instead of using the default IP address (you can use that method to configure it after the 1st config). All was good and it was easy to see if I had internet just by looking at the router.

The design of the router is really nice. Black with blue lights looks sleek on top a black desk. The front panel of lights indicating the status of each feature is great. I don't have to keep clicking refresh to test the connection.

Performance of the router is excellent. While we don't use wireless N too much (only 1 laptop does), we wanted it because we would be using it with any new computers that would be purchased soon. There were no dead spots in my home, but there were areas of low connectivity with the Dl-624. This router improves those issues. In the basement two floors below the router, a laptop gets an Excellent or Very Good connection (54Mbps b/c its Wireless b/g on that PC). The area where the signal has to go through the most walls gets a "Good" connection of about 3 bars.

Configuration after the initial setup is pretty straightforward. There are many options on the left (Firewall, DMZ, DNS settings, etc). My DNS's are OpenDNS and it seems to keep those settings fine. I noticed when I enabled the DMS the internet would continue to drop out randomly. Disabling DMZ fixed the problem.
I also had to change the channel of the wireless network because it was interfering with cordless phones. Changing the channel is easy so if phones interfere with it at your home you can easily change the channel.

The firewall doesn't seem the easiest to establish but it does give a list of over 50 preconfigured settings for games such as Age of Empires, Flight Simulator- as well as other things like Skype and video chat services.

QoS is a nice feature to have.
