"Set up was a NIGHTMARE!"2.5 starson by rosebud1971
Pros: High speed transfer, great signal throughout entire home.
Cons: Set up - After 3 hours, Manual setup via IP was required so I have no access to additional software offered, like guest accounts. Cisco connect did not work at all, so speed setup is unavailable for addit. devices.
- Not dual band
- No USB port
Summary: Valet Plus install for home wifi network, trying to install software on a 8 month old Windows 7 PC (failed), then a 2 month old MacBook OS X Snow Leopard (double fail).
I bought this item as a replacement after my DLink 615 bit the dust, thinking that I would pay a little more and have ease of setup and strong signal. It promised super easy setup for multiple computers from a USB, using the wireless. Simple right? I thought the setup for my old router was bad because it had to be hardwired and accessed from the IP, but this was worse.
Setup was a nightmare! I am fairly computer savvy and after 2 hours of attempting to install the Cisco Connect software which is on a USB drive, multiple resets, and rebooting my modems and computer several times, I finally gave up and called the Cisco Customer Service line. The lady was really nice which was a plus, however we ended up with her remote accessing my computer (very uncomfortable for me) and attempting (and failing) to override settings to get the software to install.
After an hour on the phone with her (we are now at 1 am), she finally went to the modem's IP address and configured it manually, which I should have just done in the first place, but I really hoped to have the additional software that was included. Manual configuration was less than 5 minutes even after we disconnected the remote access and I went back in to reset a new password that she did not know.
After install, the signal was full strength throughout the entire house and I have 4 devices connected. No problems there. Speed is fine, but the modem isn't dual band, so if you connect an older device that runs off b/g then the entire network slows down to the transfer rate of the older device. 3 antennas are internal, which is nice and the unit has screw holes if you want to mount it on the wall. It is fairly pleasing to the eye, looking like a little spaceship sitting on the desk. LOL.
All in all, I wouldn't have even CONSIDERED this modem had I known that I would have had such a terrible time trying to install the software. I paid full price for only partial features and I am still seriously considering returning it and buying the AirPort Extreme. Aside from that, so far the wireless has worked fine.
