Pros: Too expensive to beat with a hammer.
Cons: Droped packets, wild ping rates, reboots even when you only save a setting, At one time it would not save any settings, but it loved to reboot.
Summary: As a Project Manager I realize that my expectations may be higher then others. But I do expect a product to perform as advertised. I my last router was a D-Link and performed as expected therefore I was really looking forward to this unit.
The D-Link DGL-4500 has been a dismal failure, from dropped packets to outright nightmarish performance. A hub would have performed better. I expected a lot from all the write ups. For starters that beautiful blue screen to always be showing me what lines are active, line performance, etc. No it does not. In fact it is as black as the unit it?s self. Only when re-booting or if you press on of the black buttons and scroll through a menu will it light up. Otherwise all you will see is the blue on light.
I have scoured the internet and read the manual for how to set this unit up to perform its magic. Game fuel is at best a bad joke. If your check the settings, basically all you do is open all the ports and give your computer top priority. That?s it. My unit has been a nightmare for even basic performance. Let me be clear, I updated the firmware upon set up and configured the unit for optimum gaming performance. The result, my pings are ranging wildly from 62 to 999 and everything in between. The fluctuations are amazing, here is a taste of what happened in only three minutes 62, 130, 142, 540, 632, 82, 62, 999??, 78, 140, 135, 245, 110, 720, 45, 999?.., 420, 187, 125, 110, 140, 64, 540, 999.., 260. You can see that it makes for the most frustrating experience when gaming. I have pinged my service provider, formatted my computer, reset to factory defaults, replaced the service providers modem you name it. I have even disabled my firewall and anti virus. There was no measurable improvement. The only thing that does work is to go direct to the internet, then the performance returns. But obviously I did not buy a router if I didn?t have a need for one.
This product was obviously rolled out prematurely and is full of performance issues. I believe it is a manufacturing or design issue as well as poor software. If you persist and purchase one your on your own. D-Link support will try to help you but ultimately you will own this incredible paper weight. I have replaced it with a basic router from Linksys and I have my performance back. D-Link and I are soon to meet in small claims court. When the judgment comes I will update this file.
