"Horrible device, which should be recalled." on by Bigromeo

Pros: easy set-up, tech support understandable, if not a little arrogant.

Cons: tech support specialists sometime impatient. Device resets itself every 10 min, causing disconnect. Useless for online gaming.

Summary: If you still decide to purchase this device: shame on you! Set-up is very easy, even for the begginer. For web surfing, e-mail reading, and basic usage it's fine. But for heavy downloading, and online gaming it's useless, as it keeps resetting itself, and disconnecting internet. D-Link is aware of this problem but won't admit it unless you force the issue or get the right tech. They keep trying to fix it with firmware updates, but personnally, I believe it's a hardware defect, which requires a recall. But that'll never happen. Anyway, trying to get a rma so I can send this garbage back. I'm using Linksys now and I'm completely satisfied. But I've only had 3 days. Got my fingers crossed. Well that's it. Good surfing!

"Watch your firmware update" on by Simmon Li

    Pros: Very easy to configure.

Cons: Initially, it drops the wireless connection frequently. Firmware upgrade helped. But please read on.

Summary: Many users have already written numerous reviews on this router. I do not want to repeat anything here. But I would like to share my experience with firmware upgrade on this router.

When I first set up the router on WPA about a year ago, the wireless connection dropped frequently. Then one day, I realized that I should visit D-Link's web site to check if a firmware update is available. Sure enough, there was a "newer" version. So I downloaded the firmware file, and updating the firmware was a piece of cake.

However, the router refused to operate under WAP wireless after the firmware update. To continue using the wireless router, I had to change to the less secured WEP.

I went to Office Depot (where I bought the router) and talked to a staff about the problem after the firmware update. He told me to update the firmware one more time to ensure that it is installed properly. I downloaded the same firmware file again, and updated the firmware one more time. Bingo! The router is working very well again in WAP, without any disconnection. Thanks to the Office Depot staff.

If you experience any problems after a firmware update, repeat the update once more. That may just cure the problem altogether.

"Will not work with SBC DSL speedstream 5100a" on by JC191482

    Pros: ease of set up

    Cons: useless CD documentation

Summary: Attention SBC DSL subscribers: This and many other routers will not work with SBC Yahoo DSL's speedstream 5100a. Their other DSL modem the 5100b needs to be bridged and re-configured for it to work. A very intimidating endeavor for the average user. Got mine from Newegg.com which was the only good thing about it. Customer service were very nice and promptly sent me a RMA number right away so I could return it. I was unable to evaluate the router since it will not work with my set up. SBC wanted me to buy their own router, the 2wire gateway which is a lot more expensive, a lot slower and a lot less secure. The moral of the story: Wireless set ups are difficult to do if you are an SBC DSL subscriber.

"Very effective wireless router in a difficult, high-interference setting" on by eman01

Pros: Good range, reliable signal, no dropoffs

    Cons: None so far

Summary: Have had DI-624 for 2 mos.(located in basement)on a system w/ 2 wired desktops and wireless to 2 laptops (802.11g only). Can use laptop anywhere in 3000 sq ft house with "excellent - v. good" signal @ 54 Mbps on main floor and "good" signal @ ~27 Mbps on top floor. I happen to also have a 2.4 GHz phone system AND a 100m (Class I) bluetooth dongle on one desktop, all coexisting nicely w/o apparent problems (amazing if you ask me). VERY happy with this product.

Tech support has been decent w/ good help with initial setup & signal loss problems (now gone), but unable to help with errors in browser-based setup program (program had trouble accessing router after using msconfig>startup to remove all drivers for printer problem; prob. disappeared after startup programs reinstalled).

    "Monumental P.O.S." on

    Pros: None

Cons: Product quality is complete crap. Lasted a whole 3 days...before "something" ruined it...three surge protectors and UPS, yet somehow its so delicate that it stopped working overnight.
