"Completely unstable"
Pros: When it works, it works good
Cons: Reverts to factory defaults randomly, WiFi signal is horrible
Summary: I purchased this router because it was the cheapest at the time. I soon found out that I got exactly what I paid for... an unstable little box of plastic and silicon.
The D-Link DIR-450 works OK when it isn't having problems. Unfortunately, it has problems A LOT! Most settings require a restart, which wouldn't be so bad if the router didn't revert to factory defaults randomly. It may restart just fine or it may boot up with no security settings, no ISP settings, and no network settings. Restoring a backup doesn't do any good, because the backup only holds the administrator's login information. Hostname, port forwarding settings, security settings, and ISP settings all have to be reentered.
The router also uses DNS relay by default. I suspect this is the cause of the almost daily crashes. Disabling DNS Relay does no good, since every computer connected to the router continues to retrieve the router's IP as the primary and secondary DNS server instead of the ISP's DNS server.
The WiFi signal is fine as long as you are sitting less than 3 feet away from the router. Step outside of that 3-4 foot radius and your signal will drop to 2 bars. Step to 5 feet and you'll get 1. Not satisfactory.
The bottom line is: no matter how desperate you are and no matter how tight your budget is, DO NOT purchase the D-Link DIR-450.
