"frequent disconnections"

Pros

ease of setup

Cons

DISRUPTIVE SERVICE, INCOMPETENT TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Summary

This router CANNOT maintain its connection--consistently kicks you off and provides intermittent, SLOW connections. AWFUL.

"This router is junk: continuous disconnections / slow."

0.5 stars  | on by jmacgowans

Pros

Good price and easy setup.

Cons

Continuously disconnects and must be rebooted/restarted - sometimes it requires unplugging from power in order to regain connection to modem. Mostly slow wireless connection with intermittent fast speed. Signal won't reach other side of 2600sqft home

Summary

Spend a little extra for a better router.

Pros

Very attractive price ($30 off).
Excellent signal strength.
Great range.
Solid Tech. Support help for the setup (on a Saturday!)
See my Summary comments for more info.

Cons

I'm not giving the DIR-628 five stars because of the AOL toolbar issue (see the March 8, 2010 comment by review123 for details).

I'm pleased w/ this D-Link DIR-628 dual-band wireless router. In terms of signal strength, I'm getting 5/5 bars on my 3-year-old Compaq laptop. My office is one storey below and at the other end of the house (a large home) from the router, which sits in the upstairs office.

Before I opened the box, I checked a couple of websites for comments, incl. this one, and noted here that someone wrote a comment entitled "With the router you will get uninstallable AOL toolbar". I called D-Link Tech. Support and the guy (w/ a heavy East Indian accent; the Support Center was surely overseas) was patient and helpful. Within 10 minutes, I had my old wireless G router removed and the DIR-628 set up and two computers (wired desktop, wireless laptop) accessing the Internet, no problem.

Will I still think the DIR-628 is a 4-star unit after the warranty expires in a year? Hopefully.
