"Get new Firmware" on by GSES
Pros: Fast at long Distances, Stable
Cons: Old Firmware is useless
Summary: I had endless troubles with this Router when I first purchased it. It would not work properly with any VoIP application, including Skype or MSN Messenger. Connection speeds would also drop to 5mbs, around 5ft from the router. Linksys will provide you with 1.00.12 (Beta) which dramatically improves this router from a paper weight to a solid performer. The router comes with v. 1.00.09 installed.

"Glitchy interface, but buzzes along after all !!" on by TrumanII
Pros: Excellent Wi-Fi coverage, umm...well...
Cons: Promises of 10X only with Linksy SRX400 Wireless NIC products, backwards glitchy web interface, setup disc non-functional
Summary: Well to start I must say that I was wowed by the specs and all those antennas, plus the touting of 10x, oh so gullible me was taken right off. BUT...getting it home and operational out of the box was another story. Was having the same exact perfomance dysfunction that the prior User Reviewed as his own experience, so I commented negativiely as well, but I am a fiddler, read on.
And by the way, PLEASE NOTE:This Linksys SRX400 router the specs are ONLY applicable if you use this router with it's own Linksys propietory SRX400 NIC cards/devices, so with my Linksys Extreme G-Standard card it reads 54.0 MBs, not 10x the 10/100 standard they claim, so of course a nasty Linksys trick play on words. And as well as it will probably play out like most of their prior high speed wireless routers..this SRX400 will probably be the victim of the usual Linksys mayhem, with Hardware Versions sliding out in the market that only reach their climax of promised performance on the third generation of Hardware, (HW Ver. A, B, C).
Web-Interface is backwards, ackward and un-intuitive, obvious they rushed this puppy on the market with a very ackward interface, unlike their One-Step Setup on prior wireless routers, this one cannot even run it's own Install CD, for the applet that pops up does not offer a next step response, like NEXT, or OK or whatever, just sits there.
As with all of their routers, only time will tell they can improve, or maybe a quick Firmware Upgrade to cure all the woes..WRONG!!
Seems that their latest firmware upgrade is a problem, for me at least. For it only works thus far with default factory settings for me...but that is with my situation, using Linksys DWL-G520 Extreme G Wireless NIC and other Laptop wireless connnections to be precise, and this may not be everyone's situation here, but this following may be applicable for your situation.
PLUS...and very important disclaimer. All you reading this are saying, enough of this *#@% why doesn't my wireless devices or VOIP connections function with this oh so wonderful SRX400 router. Well low and behold I found the problem, for me, I hope it may be your problem solved as well I hope.
For some reason on the first setup page on the MTU settings they have an AUTO setting by default. Well, switch that to MANUAL, click APPLY, wait for reboot, and VOILA, we have wireless connections.
They have mistakenly set this by default to AUTO and hopefully this will cure some woes out there as I was facing the fact that having no wireless deemed this router a failure, but this seems to fix that after a day of cursing. Also, with VOIP Telphone that are having failed connections, it seems that you must put them IN FRONT of the router, instead of directly into the SRX400 router's, something I dread but it works.
I.E.) Cable from cable modem directly into WAN on VOIP Modem, then LAN out from VOIP modem to WAN on router, if you didn't know that already.
Maybe setting them up for DMZ maybe another option, but the prior option works, and does not diminish the thoroughput of the Cable Modem in my instance.
Although the transmission speeds on this SRX400 wireless connections seems only to read 54mbs, it does seem to be a rather faster than my previous Netgear RangeMax connection of 105mps, maybe further sucessful firmware upgrades will cure this woe. BTW, my Netgear Rangemax died after exactly one year, thus this Linksys SRX400 replacing that, and the 54mbs rate is my only problem after this fix, which may be of some concern.
VOIP connections seem to be fine now, and the wireless is EXCELLENT in all areas of my two story house, which in my case, at best only received GOOD or sporadic Very Good at prior to this router with the Netgear RangeMax.
So that is my story, hope it helps... -
"Linksys support and quality of this router" on by cmottaripp
Pros: It works about two months
Cons: When it runs is fast
Summary: Today is the third router I received from linksys to replace a defectiver WRT54GX4. The mounting tabs on the back are broken, case is heavily scratched, the sticker that states: "void warranty if broken" It's broken, the reset button is all the way pushed in and locked. Given the physical condition of this unit I'm not gonna even bother since the last two did not work after a couple of months.
This my THIRD replacement (Factory Warranty) router for this one. The last two did not work straight up out of the box. I have spent at least 2 hours with tech support for each router until they finally decide is defective. I have now been on hold for 50 minutes and still holding to just send it back. This device is terrible and so is the service from this Company. I'm sure you would be better of with any of the other manufacturers out there. -

"Firmware Version 1.00.17 seems to work best" on by ericghanson
Pros: Speed and connectivity
Cons: Lengthy, unjustified firmware release cycle
Summary: Now that Firmware version 1.00.17 has been installed I finally have the WRT54GX4 SRX400 that Linksys has been advertising. I have a fairly complex networking environment that was working fine with the WRT54GS with the Linksys High-Gain antenna, but failed when replaced with the WRT54GX4 until the 1.00.17 upgrade. I now stay connected and at a higher speed and the WRE54G extender does not randomly disconnect (at least not after a week of use).
If you can connect the router to a network where you can access and upgrade to the current latest firmware version on the Linksys web site (1.00.17), I would recommend this product.
