  • "Faulty Router: Dual Wireless Drops Out Constantly"
    0.5 stars
    on by ralphandrew

Pros: None (except for its looks).

Cons: 1. Dual band wireless drops constantly resulting in intermittent connections.
    2. Requires frequent reboots (and resets automatically sometimes).
    3. User guide has errors (does not correctly address light patterns).
    4. Incompetent technical support.

Summary: Having gone through two WRT610N routers in two days, I can confirm this router is faulty and not ready for real-world use. I tested it in an environment with new MacBook Pros (gigabit ethernet and wireless N capability) and Windows PCs, and the wireless signal drops out constantly requiring me to reboot the router. At one point, after rebooting the router, it reset all of its settings to factory defaults. On other occasions the 5 Ghz band disappeared completely, requiring a reboot as well. I have experienced exactly the same problems with both routers (the first one and its replacement). So now I am forced to replace it with another brand/model.

I have spoken with Linksys support supervisors and Level II technicians for hours, and none has been able to come up with a solution. Moreover, I have tried soft resets, hard resets, firmware upgrades and configuring the wireless bands with different channels and encryption types, to no avail.

Please be advised that there are serious problems with the WRT610N router that Linksys needs to address immediately. It has not been thoroughly tested.

go into the wireless settings and don't run the router in dual-band mode, kind of defeats the purpose, but it works in "N" mode

I have the same problem. I have already seen THIS firmware upgrade in Cisco page (2.00.01.15) for ver 2.0.

I'm going to upgrade now, and tell you about the results.
    Here is the address: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/EU/es/support/WRT610N/download
Take into account the version of the router (1 or 2)

It's the FIRST upgrade since the original 2.00.00 B05 that comes with the ver.2.0

Anyway, in the comments, they don't say ANYTHING of resolving problems of desconnectios. Here is the "comment" about this new firmware:

    Last Release Date: 09 / 13 / 10
    Last Firmware version: 2.0.01 B015

    - Fixed Slow Internet speed issue.
    - Fixed Access Resticitions issue.
    - Fixed USB storage relative issues.
    - Fixed DynDns relative issues.
    - Fixed some browser-based configuration utility issues.
    - Fixed some minor issues.

    Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina
    I'll post my results

I have the same problem. This device work fine for a month and now the router freezes. I need to turn it off and sometimes when I start it, loses the configurarion. I am trying with a USB cooler because I suspect that is a heat problem and now the device works fine. A terrible solution.

I have the same problem. it worked for about two weeks and now drops signal constantly. I can get it back by hard rebooting it only but that doesn't last long. Lame.

I have the same problem, and i found out that every time 1 of the users of the routers drops, everyone drops. We've tried hours and hours to fix this but to no avail. We've returned this modem to replace with the same type but still, there's no difference. It still reboots and sometimes it goes back to factory setting. We haven't contacted the manufacturer since we are of a different country. We are now trying to find another router and Linksys is not one of them.

I agree, I have already boxed it up for return.... Worked well for a day then dropped signal on either or both bands. I spent hours configuring with all recommended settings of Cisco and product owners...this thing is a piece of junk.

Wish I had seen your post and the others that followed. Have spent hours troubleshooting network, which frequently lost connection due to this router. Always thought CISCO/Linksys offered quality until now.

I recently purchased this same model, 07-01-09 and have the same consistent issue. I cant believe they have the same issue going on a year later. Thanks for posting this.LA-AL
