Pros: It worked for about 6 months

Cons: Overheats and requires reboots several times a day

Summary: If you go to Netgear's own forum's (in their support section) you'll find that a lot of users have been complaining about these routers overheating and dropping their connections. The problem extends even up to the 624. Some owners have reported failures as early as day 1 of ownership. Solutions range from ripping open the case, adding heatsinks, to installing fans on the unit. Why go through all that bother?

Netgear's own techs are either clueless or refuse to acknowledge the probem. I've finally given up on it.

In response to the comment about overheating and dropping connections, I tried your suggestion about adding a cooling fan and it worked! I've had my 614 for 5 or 6 years and it worked fine until a few months ago, then it started dropping the connection every 2 hours or so. I remembered I still have an old CPU and they all have a cooling fan in the back, so I opened it up and pulled that fan out (it comes out easily). But its label says it takes 12 volts DC, then I remembered I have an old universal converter and it has a 12 volt setting. I wired it to the fan and placed the fan right behind the netgear. You can feel the air blowing out the other side thru the little vent slots. It runs much cooler to the touch, and so far no more dropped connections. This was a cheap fix (cost me $0). Anyone else with this problem: you probably still have an old CPU and don't know why you kept it. This is why!

This router worked fine the first couple months but as time went on, this router could NOT handle anything. Even 5 MB files, this router would disconnect. It doesn't even reconnect sometimes and I have to do it manually. I do NOT recommend this router at all. Horrible, horrible. Tech support is also awful! They just tell you the normal stuff that is on the manual. Do NOT buy this router!

I bought it at Sept 06 from a public show in Hong Kong. From the very first day of connection, the connection always drop off for no reason. It was definitely no use even I updated the firmware, switched the firewall off and located it somewhere without any hindrance. I totally **** off when I found that the router did not function when the distance with my laptop was more that 3 meters, thought in horizontal level and nothing between.... I finally gave up and buy buffalo WHR -HP-G54 and that never ever happen again. Netgear stuff is terribly suck......

The price was attractive, Ist problem was installing the software, the word error came up twice . I won't make this error again . This router is going back for errorless refund.

I have the router for more than two years, with occassional drop of connection. Nothing to worry about. Recenty I have to up/down load significant amount of data and it drops service every 30 min.

I have one of the Netgear routers, a WGR614, and it does seem to be overheating. Why bother to mod it? Because other than the overheating problem it totally works. I really wanted Linksys to work becuase the user interface is totally responsive, and I like the cases, but the truth is, I've never had anything aproaching an easy time with Linksys. The Linksys routers have caused me endless heartache trying to get their routers to work with our VPN software (from Cysco) which should work sonce they are owned by the same parent company, but they don't. Their installation software for add on Wireless G devices is a nightmare, buggy as hell. If I had to buy new, I'd buy D-Link, because I have NEVER had a problem with a D-link product, but barring that, the Netgear does everything it should when it doesn't seem to overheat. I'd rather keep it, cool it and have something I know works than spend another week trying to get a new router working.

This ticks me off. This is suppose to be a great router. It drops connections from day one. Tech support could not figure it out. I am taking this piece of junk back!
