"Easy set-up and does its job (sort of)"

by forkboy on August 10, 2009

Pros: Easy set-up CD-ROM included; nice looking device (if that's important to you); plenty of flexibility in set-up, but likely far more than the average consumer needs/wants/is aware of

Cons: Doesn't have the range I expected (no better than my 3-year old, middle-of-the-road Linksys); no option to change user name (at least that I could find); directions for set-up of WEP or WPA could be better explained/illustrated

Summary: Conceded, I have only had the device a day, but either it works or it doesn't, right? Set-up was pretty straight-forward following along with the wizard, which I didn't need, but made things easy enough. No option to change user name that I could find in user's guide or online, which is a let down considering changing such is a smart security technique. Set-up of MAC filtering was easy.

After initial success with setting up the unit (no special things done to unit, like MAC filtering, turning off SSID broadcast, etc.) and testing for Internet connectivity, we lost both LAN and wireless connectivity on all devices. Rebooted all laptops and the PC to which it is attached and all returned to normal and remained such after turning off the SSID broadcast, enabling MAC filtering, etc. (but no WEP or WPA - yet).

Hoped for better range performance than our previous Linksys (which was fine - always had connectivity: wireless router in basement and laptop on second floor at other end of house). This Netgear reaches just as well, but no better. Could be the lack of MIMO support by the wireless cards in the laptops, but still....I would have hoped for better in a product that is 3-years newer than our now defunct Linksys.

Still...it does what it says it will do. Set-up was a breeze. Don't understand the sudden down-time, but it's back up and appears to be fine. That's good in my book.
