"works great as a wireless access point"

by getnuked on July 15, 2008

Pros: simple to setup, handles interference very well, supports WPA2 PSK security, excellent power supply

Cons: shiny plastic case is a smudge magnet

Summary: I am currently using this as a wireless access point to link my Ethernet LAN with 802.11G/N devices and have yet to observe any problems (I use a dedicated firewall/router running m0n0wall for Internet access). I am using the strongest encryption mode (WPA2 PSK/AES) with no interoperability issues (connecting to both Windows, Linux and embedded devices).

The router performs quite well and has never required rebooting. It is constantly on and has a minimum of 10 Mbps going through it 24/7. When faced with interference the worst that has happened are dropped frames, yet the link always comes back. In comparison, my D-link WBR-1310 (802.11G) constantly requires rebooting when faced with interference.

One of the reasons I chose this router was because of the security features. It supports WPA2 using AES encryption (the best you can get on 802.11). I am using the PSK (Pre-Shared Key) mode, interfacing with various other devices without any problems.

What's interesting is the power supply that ships with it isn't a cheap wall wart. In fact it's designed to take up just one plug position on a power bar (it's small and stands vertically, unlike the large, fat wall warts which take 3 or more positions). In addition, it's rated at 5V and 2.5A, which is way more than the router needs. Many networking companies try to cut costs with poor quality power supplies, it's nice to see one that doesn't skimp on something that is actually quite important.
