"Good mobile solution for some; beware setup frustration"2.5 starson by lionspawg
Pros: I set this up for elderly parent who travels between 2 homes. Good, inexpensive solution compared to maintaining cable / DSL access in 2 places. Fast & efficient connection when tethered (wireless spotty). 3.0 GB data plan sufficient for light use.
Cons: Phone support didn't solve wireless connect issue & said problem was brand new laptop. Told me to go back to Best Buy. Instead, I found 2 online tips that seemed to help: update driver in ctrl panel; remove global card. Wireless still inconsistent.
Summary: When tethered to the computer with the USB connector, the device performance was flawless, although turning on the power and waiting for it show up in the VZAccess window was a bit of a time consuming chore. The connection seemed sufficiently fast for light use.
When used wirelessly, the performance was inconsistent: sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. This is after going through hours of phone support in 2 different American based call centers (who tried to help but eventually gave up, telling me to go back to Best Buy and return the brand new Windows 7 computer). I eventually found two online tips that may have helped, although I'm not sure to what extent. As this is a gift for a low tech elderly parent, I instructed her to use the device tethered at all times to avoid the frustration.
Finally, I have a minor gripe in that it takes an especially long time to power off the device - you have to hold down the power button for about 10 seconds.
In summary, I am sufficiently satisfied that this device is an inexpensive and satisfactory alternative to maintaining two internet services in two different homes. Furthermore, the device was free and Best Buy gave $100 off a laptop purchase (with a 2 year Verizon contract, of course). I selected the 3.0 GB plan for $35 per month. This data plan seems sufficient, as I used up less than 10% of that allotment over several days of setting up and using the new computer with the Fivespot. With the above caveats, I recommend the device.
