"Netgear is going down the tubes"

    by ces_gonzalez on March 7, 2005

Pros: Great througput, Great range when it works

Cons: Unstable, mediocre web interface, limited flexibilitiy

Summary: I have had this for about 4 days. Let me say the first day i had it i was up and running in about 1 hour with my machines either connecting 54 Megs or 108. I was loving life. In the morning however all my machines lost their connection. I have all different wireless cards 11b, 11g, 11superg and they all quit. Well after having to reset this baby i was up and running again for a whopping 4 hours then i had to reconfigure all my crap again. It fluxuates from 54 meg (on my 11g) to 1 meg! This is horrible. I am actually in process as i write this of running a hard line. I did a bit of research and saw complaints on this firewall earlier but i put it on user error. Now i see that it is a poorly designed machine. I know some of you say what if its interference? i have checked and run my 11b router and everything runs fine. So i think netgear's quality might be slipping. I still like them and am writing this product off but i still like their other network products. Especially their biz stuff. Anyway stay away from this product, i would suggest checking out other firewalls i have wasted too much time on the promise of wireless. My old wireless router is great for surfing but for real biz nothing beats cable

I have experienced the same problem not only Netgear but other routers as well. If a router has not been setup with the ISP's DNS servers and your login information, then the drop-out problem will exist unless you have to configure within it.
