"Great until added a web phone (VoIP)"

    by mercadg3 on July 10, 2005

Pros: Fast (when use a preN laptop card), no drop outs, reliability,Security OK

    Cons: SUPPORT SERVICE !

Summary: I got it last November ī04 (just when released) I use it with a Belkin PreN Card. Got it first for office & worked better than expected, the IT dept could not believe the benefit/price ratio ( we have CISCO pro G wireless in the entire network) ,then the company upgraded some offices with pre N MIMO tech ) as a company test, then I brought it to home and everyone was happy ( had to get two others lapt top PreN Card) I use a 512 Mbs ADSL. Everything was pure love...until.. I decided to get a Voice Over Internet protocol (VoIP)...evrything crashed! I uninstalled everything, but did not work, then the VoIP company suggested was the protocol in the phone box, I was supposed to try on the IP address in the router and try some other formats )not only ppp), did it. Did not work. The VoIP company send a tech personnel and insisted was the router ( actually the voIP worked great when the router was not connected) then they installed a Linksys G router and everything worked )proving the router problem.I had to restart the router severals times since it got frozen or did not recognize the pre N cards, send mails to Belkin every time, but the online service could not detect the problem. They actually could not solve this.
The voIP dept send me an expert and when saw the router indicated me what the problem was, solution: connect the ADSL box to the VoIP first )no matter what Belkin says!!!)then route to router via a 2nd (auxiliary( from the box, then from router to the computers.
Finally ,one laptop (EVO 610N) for a reason we do not get it yet does not accept at first the router security code (even in administrator) so you must type it every time )but works!.
Now we are back to a happy family
Advice: if you now a little a bit routers, this is it! buy this one.
If donīt ,keep the Linksys G or try the other new one with MIMO from Linksys.
This is working great with us now,but unhappy moments we had.

I have a Pre-N and a Sipura 2000 and they work beautifully together...after making a minor adjustment to the Sipura configuration that was listed in the instructions from VoicePulse.

    Modem >>> Vo/IP box >>> Router >>> PC's (Wireless/Wired).

If you have internet server application which require 'port-forwarding' through your router, confirgure the Vo/IP box to port-foward the Router's IP, and configure the Router to port forward for the various PC's.

Should work like a charm. I've used this method with Linksys routers and it works fine. Vo/IP boxes can be weird of you hang them off of switches.

I was using a Netgear WGT624, but found the constant dropping of the connection to be too much hassle, so I returned it to PC World (who exchanged it without a quibble, great customer service from them) and paid an extra Ģ20 for this Belkin instead.

Setup was easy and fairly straightforward (more later), and the range and signal strength have increased dramatically. I used to get a maximum of 20% connection strrength on my Advent laptop's built-in wireless connection when downstairs in my dining room (the router is upstairs). This is in a modern house with thin walls, and I wondered if the metal in the walls was causing a poor signal.

The Belkin router answered me a firm "no, it was your old router that was the problem, mate." I now get a MINIMUM of 60% connection strength, and so far the signal hasn't been intermittant or dropped once.

One slightly odd thing happened when I was setting up the Belkin, however. I went through the software installation, connected up the router to the cable modem and computer, and then the installation software said that it was going to search for the Internet connection, and that it might have to retry up to 10 times. So I let it do just that - it couldn't find the Internet connection.

Without thinking, I opened Internet Explorer, and the connection was there. I checked on the laptop and that was fine as well. So it looks like maybe the installation software isn't as good as the router itself.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this router to anyone looking for a home or small office wireless network. It works exactly as I hoped my first router would, and has given me a much higher opinion of wireless networking.

As for all this Pre-N business, and the whole "will it become obsolete", who cares? It works now, and my laptop's 108.g wireless card is getting terrific speeds and a solid connection.

My Belkin Pre-N router has connected to it two wired PCs, a PC with a Dell 54G external USB device, Vonage voip, a Belkin 54G print server and three laptops (Latitude C840 w/the Belkin Pre-N card, Inspiron 9300 with the internal 54G Intel mini-PCI, and my son's Thinkpad with its' 11b). All work great, no complaints at all.

Has anyone used VoIP with the Netgear WPN824? I've been using VoIP with the D-Link DI-624 and it's been working fine as long as the router held the signal. The router has been dropping the signal so often that we are forced to replace it. The VoIP works great when connected directly to the cable modem, and so does our computer.

you have to have a router that is made for Voip they have to have phone lines coming out of them. now vonage is coming out with a wifi phone here within the next couple of months. that's what i am waiting for because it would work perfectly as a wireless phone around the house especially with this router
