"Buyer's Remorse"

3 stars  | on

Pros

on 22-Feb-2005 08:37:30 PM Pros: Nice design. Like the docking station. Like Sirrus services for sure.

Cons

Cons: Horrible FM transmitter. The glue back used to mount docking station wouldn't stick to anything. The power, antenna, FM booter and audio jacks in the docking station are too cheap - poor quality. Keep shoping and make the strength of the FM tranceiv

"Great Way to own great service"

Pros

Design, features, ease of use

Cons

Sound not as good as with digital output or as good as a CD

In my opinion a great Sirius receiver, that has a great boombox that you can buy with it. Can't say much bad about it other than on a good stereo it doesn't sound as good as my XM XRT-12 which has digital optical output. For that reason I just ordered the Kenwood DT-7000s which has an optical output. Overall I would highly recommend this receiver!!

Pros

Lots of good programming

- Warranty service abominable - Link to FM radio marginal - No ACC football , it's on XM

WARNING: Do NOT expect expeditious warranty service. My Sportster failed mid January after four months service. After repeated phone calls, as of March 26 I am still without a receiver. They finally admitted there is too much demand for new receivers for them to provide priority warranty service. Also they require you to pay for shipping to their New Jersey plant.

Don't take my word for it. Call Sportster tech support and ask them how long for warranty service - 800 869 5590 TT#1 TT #2 Then WAIT for Tech.

Unit works OK when it works at all but if it fails you're pretty much on your own

Contrary to my pre-purchase impression from Sirius advertising, Sirius does NOT broadcast ACC football. They are good with NFL.

The instructions do not tell you the "FM OUT" jack on the back of the car kit is to plug is a piece of wire to act as antenna feeding signal to a nearby FM radio. Without that antenna the FM modulator output is unsatisfactory. With the antenna the modulator output is marginal. Even a moderately strong FM station will override the Sportster. It's also pretty tricky to change the modulator output frequency - not much problem if you stay in the same area but on a long trip you'll have to make several frequency changes. The audio output jack gives acceptable sound if you can plug it in to an audio amplifier.

If you insist on buying this product, recommend getting it from a store like BestBuy and pay the extra charge for extended warranty so you don't have to deal with Sirius/Sportster tech support. Next time I'll go with XM. Might not be any better but couldn't be any worse.
