"Cool to have XM in my hand, but reception is spotty"
Pros: Content is king and XM has much more than broadcast radio
Cons: The reception issues are significant enough that this won't get rid of 20GB iPod
Summary: I have considered getting one of these since it was announced last year. I tend to listen to XM at work via my PC (free feed). Thought it'd be nice to listen to the content in my car and my home theatre. I won a Tao recently and have been playing w/ it for about 2 weeks.
The concept is promising but the execution leaves a little to be desired.
Pluses:
-It's nice to have access to all the content and be able to schedule recordings up to 5 hours.
-Comes w/ most of the accessories you'll need.
-Relatively small form factor.
-Stock ticker is cool.
Minuses:
-FM transmitter doesn't work that great. I end up using a tape adapter, but that means more cables in the car.
-Can't get good reception at my desk, even though I'm near a window. It's NW facing though.
-Antenna must always see the sky, so bridges, tunnels and overpasses cause drop outs.
-You can only schedule 2 different programs.
-You can only schedule programs while in the home dock.
-Sound quality is variable, depending on the channel.
-5 hr battery life is pretty short.
-Doesn't come w/ lipstick antenna like MyFi.
W/ the convenience of podcasts w/ iTunes 4.9, it's hard for my Tao to beat my 20GB 4G iPod. Sound is cleaner and more consistent. And, I don't have to deal w/ an antenna.
But for a free unit, I can't complain.

Do you have to be outside for the thing to work without the external antena? I want to get one for my job but I don't have a window to be pointing at.
