Upside: At four pounds, this scanner is designed to accompany mobile professionals on their travels. It has just four raised buttons--Copy, Scan, File, and E-mail--protected by a slightly protruding front lip. There's a lock button on the back of the scanner that protects the glass and docks the scan head during transport. (Note: We haven't put it through a stress test yet.) Also, you have to remember to bring the USB cable along--it doubles as a power supply.
Downside: Not only is the LiDE 35's design a hand-me-down, its bare-bones feature set is the same as its big brother's. Its minimal software package is designed for light scanning, such as the occasional document or list. We weren't thrilled with the LiDE 50's performance, and unfortunately, since the LiDE 35 has the same specs, we're expecting subpar scans.
Outlook: If your work requires a lot of travel and you deal regularly with on-the-spot photos (as with, for example, the real estate business), the LiDE 35 might be for you. If you're a bit of an enthusiast, you might want to look at a more feature-rich unit, such as Canon's F series or Epson's Perfection line. On the plus side, the Canon LiDE 35's price is just as tempting as its elegant design. As always, we'll give you our full assessment once we get the product into our lab.
