Disappointed in Software

Pros: Image quality seems good

Cons: clunky software

Review: Software is not very good:
If you want to scan multiple photos you are not supposed to line them up with the edges of the scanner - but if you don't and they are not square the software does not do a good job of auto-straigtening them and either crops part of the picture off or leaves a white strip down one side.
If you try to do multiple images in "Advanced Scanning mode" it doesn't crop them properly either and yet it won't let you make any manual adjustments to the cropping boxes.
The software is frustrating and mares what otherwise seems like a good product.

Great scanner, great value.

Pros: Well made-solid; slides; color correct; ease of use

Cons: doesnt auto straight photos on platen?

Review: I just bought the Canon 8600F replacing an older Epson. The Epson in 'Auto' mode will straighten pictures that aren't 'exactly' laid perpendicular on the platen. I don't see this function -so far, on the Canon. Does anyone know if it has that capability? Very Handy.
Thank you in advance.

Vista - unsettling

Pros: up and running quickly for scanning

Cons: but negatives lack vitality

Review: I'm taking the functionality on trust, after all it is a Canon product.

I am not sure if I have got the bundled software installed correctly on my brand new Vista Dimension 9200. It seems that Vista has caught vendors by surprise.

There are directions to visit partners' websites to find updates (links given), although I only found the file about this on my desktop by chance - the printed documentation just tells Vista users that they should do it. Not friendly for the novice user.

For Omnipage SE 4.0, after uninstalling the original, the downloaded and unzipped upgrade exe doesn't even display properly on its startup pane. Task Manager says that it is running and there seems to be a little CPU activity, but nothing gets installed. There is an empty box which when clicked terminates it. At least the canon-supplied version loads okay, but as I am not desperate to do some OCR I have been put off checking it out - sadly.

As there seems to be a need for an upgrade, I am left wondering whether the original may cause problems, bad interactions with Vista. Unsettling. There doesn't seem to be any phone support from canon.

Overall, I am somewhat disappointed, but hopefully I'll find its virtues soon.

Canon does it again

Pros: User Friendly, Great Quality, good speed

Cons: No Bigger User Manual, No extra 35mm negative slide mount

Review: If you complain about this scanner being slow, check the resolution you set it at. Sacrifice time for quality. If you complain it is too loud, get out of those pants and hop into a dress. This is my first photo scanner and I am amazed at what it can do. It does a great job, but it wont work miracles. You may find dissapointment in some scanned negative images, but believe me, it is the negatives, not the scanner. People complain about pink lines, its the negatives. People complain about photos coming out grainy,....the negatives.. People dont see the results they want and quickly blame the scanner. This scanner does a hell of a job wether on negatives, or prints. As long as you keep the glass dust free and fingerprint free with a microfiber cloth, you will be happy. It would be nice if they gave you a bigger manual instead of just a quickguide, but nothing like googling problems wont fix.
This scanner meets my standards in what I bought it for. If it doesnt meet yours, make sure you come to that decision within 30 days of purchase so you wont be even more mad that you have to keep it.

Great Scanner, great film scanning

Pros: Film scanning is fantastic, great color and detail.

Cons: scanning can take a very long time, scanning software could be a bit better (mac)

Review: I bought this scanner primarly for scanning 35mm negatives. It does a fantastic job at that. Gives a nice preview, a lot of options such as dust and grain control. Has great color and detail for a scanner for about 160 bucks. It does however take around 60 minutes to scan 12 35mm negatives with good detail, but scanning high dpi always takes awhile however it could be faster.

If you want a great all around scanner, I highly reccomend.

OK is My description of this scanner !

Pros: ease of loading slide and negatives

Cons: the software is mediocre for mac use " too many useless feature "

Review: In My opinion the mac has all the photo prossesing features needed !
The lack of ease of use that Us Mac users are "spoilled " with are rendered useless with the software included !

Best Solution for Slides & great for prints!

Pros: Breeze to setup - was scanning slides 5 min. after installing the software

Cons: Slide adapter could be easier to use. Has to plug in.

Review: After doing extensive research on scanners I nearly purchased a LIDE scanner. Someone mentioned in a review that you had to remove the film from mounted slides to scan them. Not so good! I looked further about when the 8600 was released. It is an amazing scanner. Easy to setup, run, and fast. I have only had it for a few days, but have already scanned hundreds of slides & prints.

Great Upgrade!

Pros: Fast and quiet

Cons: Film scanning not as clear as I hoped

Review: I had an older canon scanner that cost less than half as much as this one at the time (3 years ago). The 8600F scans MUCH faster...seconds compared to minutes on my old one (at 300 dpi). The one touch buttons are programable (I changed mine to Acrobat and Photoshop). If I had to name a fault, and it may be me, but the film scanning seems a little out of focus/blurry to me-it may be the original film was out of focus-so I can't be sure at this point. I shopped and compared alot of reviews, and for the price, this came out on top. I would recommend this scanner to anyone looking in this price range.

Works for me.

Pros: Fast, quiet, simple user interface and high quality document scans.

Cons: Lacks the adjustability of my old HP but that's offset by the straightforward scanning process.

Review: Overall very good, a hair short of the quality of scans of my HP 4570 but the 4570 cost more and is no longer in production. It is light years ahead of the 4370 we bought a few weeks ago (See my review of it). We had none of the issues reported by the previous reviewer, it was out of the box and scanning in minutes in XP Pro SP2. I only gave it a 9 because there are very few 10's in the world but it's a "strong" and for the money it would be hard to beat. I like it more every time I use it and it gets used several times a day 5 days a week doing multi-page color PDF's.

Don't buy it!

Pros: WHEN IT WORKS this is a great scanner.

Cons: It hardly ever works - Twain recognition problems.

Review: There is a major twain recognition problem in the software that appears to effect a fair percentage of computers. I have been in contact with the Canon help desk on 5 occasions for lengthy sessions but to no avail - the poor souls just haven't got an answer to this problem! Canon has concluded that it is my problem not theirs but there are too many hapless purchasers showing up on internet searches for this not to be a widespread problem. I feel like starting a website to collate a case against Canon. Meanwhile the scanner makes for a good paperweight.
