Given its user-friendly operation, range of features, and high-quality photo scans, the Epson Perfection 1670 Photo offers good value for its price, especially if you already have a good image-enhancement program, such as Adobe Photoshop. If you prefer a hefty software package over film- and slide-scanning capabilities, the cheaper Canon LiDE 50 may be a better fit.

Epson dresses up the completely bland, light-gray, textured-plastic skin of the Perfection 1670 with a darker gray base and a slim, shiny, metallic-plastic control panel. The panel contains four clearly labeled buttons, one each for scanning, e-mailing, copying, and sharing images. Inside the scanner's lid, the padded document mat slides out to reveal a built-in transparency unit for scanning slides and film negatives. A black-plastic film and slide holder is included to position those media types underneath the transparency unit. The holder has room for one negative film strip (six exposures) and two slides.

The Perfection 1670 is USB 2.0 enabled, and it comes with a USB cable, a power adapter, and a power cord, making it a breeze to set up. Epson's scan driver, EpsonScan, offers users three scanning modes--Professional, Home, and Full Auto--and its installation is intuitive. With Professional mode, users select all of their own settings; Home mode allows users to choose some settings; and Full Auto mode automates the entire scanning process. The Perfection 1670 also comes with Epson Smart Panel software, an app for organizing scanning tasks; Abbyy FineReader 5.0, an OCR (optical character recognition) toolset; and ArcSoft PhotoImpression, a limited set of image-manipulation tools.

Best of all, the Perfection 1670 skillfully scans color photographs and black-and-white documents. Viewed on a 19-inch Samsung SyncMaster 957MB monitor, the 1670's color scans looked bright and crisp with little or no scanner-induced interference. Black-and-white documents showed good detail and a high level of shading subtleties, and text scans came out nicely dark and sharp.

Good scanner for a low price

Pros: Easy to use, very good reproduction, reliable

Cons: No 'On/Off' toggle switch

Review: I bought this scanner at Office Depot for $49.00. So for that price, you really can't lodge too many complaints about its functionality or durability. I only use it casually, maybe a couple to a few times a month, and have had it for about 4 years. It's refreshingly predictable in its operation and hasn't failed me yet. In an effort to provide a technical answer to previous posts...the scans apparently get sent to the default folder on your computer, in my case, the "My Documents" folder. I've used it to scan pages of text, and was able to successfully convert the pages in a usable format with OCR, although you do have to proofread thoroughly to catch any character transfer errors, but still, it saved me a lot of work regarding retyping everything. The majority of my use of the scanner has been for color photo reproduction. The color photo scans are good to very good, in my opinion. My operating system is Windows XP, and maybe that's one reason why I've had no technical issues--it could be that the scanner was developed and optimized for Windows users initially. Until I read these posts today, I never even realized that the scanner had the capability of reading slides, which makes it even more of a bargain. Overall, for such a cheap price, and even at $99, this Epson scanner performs admirably. I suppose if there's a need for some heavy duty and 'work horse' type scanning needs, a person could investigate scanners with a higher price tag.

don't buy this scanner!

Pros: didn't lose a lot of $ on this one

Cons: bad software; hangs up all the time

Review: i can scan maybe one to three pages on this scanner before it hangs up and have to reboot the computer to reset the scanner; have tried many ways to deal with this problem without success. I spend more time trying to fix the scanner than using it. Don't buy it. The review is very misleading.

arcane software - where do files go?

Pros: good resolution

Cons: no way to consistently tell it where to save files

Review: The software was written by chimps. The help files are useless. I just want to scan documents to files. Can't be done with this overbloated, bells and whistles ridden software.

Works with Mac OSX, but software poor

Pros: Considering the quality of photo scans it does, this scanner is reasonably priced at $99, but the poor quality of the software makes it frustrating to use.

Cons: The software that runs the scanner is of a poor design, with very skimpy documentation, and it crashed every time with OS X 10.6 when I first installed it. I had to download several software updates from Epson's web site to make it work. Once I finally g

User-UNFRIENDLY, IRRITATING Software design

Pros: 1. installed on Win 98SE. Installed software first and then attached the scanner. no problem. easy setup. 2. scanning quality OK.

Great scans, great value

Pros: Excellent scans from both photos and slides/negatives, adequate, easy to use software package, great price. I don't care if the CNET reviewer thinks it looks "bland", it's how the scans look that counts!

Cons: Slide/Negative adapter (included) can only see 3 frames and must be flipped over to see the remaining frames

OS X just fine

Pros: Installed on a Mac 12" Powerbook running OS X 10.2.x. Already use Photoshop so I did not need to download anything from epson. worked just fine right out of the box. 300-600+ dpi photo scanning with no problems or noticable reductions in quality.

Cons: it is sort of bland and ugly, but that's not really the point.

Decent for the price.

Pros: 'Makes relatively fast great quaity scans and decent quality slide scans. The Smart panel is convenient to use for choosing the type of scan needed.

Cons: I read the horrible reviews from Mac owners and was suspect. I rec'd a defective scanner as well. It had software that crashed often and produced dreadful scans. I anxiously exchanged it for another 1670 and have had no problems in its operation.

Terrible for Mac Users

very please

Pros: easy to do basic scans Good quality. Just don't expect 'pro' drum scanner results on slides, but as good as a high street processing shop.

Cons: Manual not very informative, especially regarding neg/slide work. Wondering if continual use of neg/slide template will scratch the glass?

Cons: Sets out to do so much but makes hard work of some of the simplest tasks. Instructions too superficial and poorly written. Also image quality could be better.
