In Epson's new scanner lineup, the reasonably priced Perfection 2400 Photo strikes a comfortable balance between the entry-level Perfection 2450 Photo. Its improved design and interface make it almost as easy to capture transparencies as to capture opaque documents; in addition, its USB 2.0 interface boosts performance noticeably. But some quirks in its capture quality may disappoint hard-core photo enthusiasts.

Now supports USB 2.0
The $229 Perfection 2400 Photo is easy to set up. The illustrated Start Here poster provides clear instructions on installing the scanner and covers basic operation. The Perfection 2400 Photo works with Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP, as well as Mac OS 8.x to 9.x. With its new scanner line, Epson switches to the faster USB 2.0 interface and even includes a cable in the box. Don't have a USB 2.0 port in your machine? Don't worry; USB 2.0 devices are backward-compatible with USB 1.1. An online reference guide covers the scanner in more depth and includes a basic troubleshooting and maintenance section. Epson also bundles Adobe's venerable Photoshop Elements on a second CD to lead you through the most common image-editing tasks.

Improved design, better software
As with previous Epson scanners, the Perfection 2400 Photo has a simple mechanical design. After unplugging the scanner's backlight, you can raise the lid on its hinges or remove it completely to accommodate thick documents. Because switching between opaque and transparent media can be a pain, Epson also improved the lid design. The backlight cover now slips into two grooves on the lid and snaps into place, simplifying the process considerably. The four buttons on the front of the scanner let you launch Epson's Smart Panel software, or you can scan an image and send it to your printer, your e-mail app, or Epson's photo-sharing Web site.

The redesigned Smart Panel software also offers a few enhancements. The program displays more buttons for launching specific tasks; for example, it now can scan to a PDA, convert captures to Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, or invoke Epson's color-matching algorithms with a single click. You also can switch to manual mode and modify the exposure and gamma; set the highlight and shadow thresholds; or adjust the red, green, and blue channels individually.

Faster scans
In CNET Labs' speed tests, the Perfection 2400 Photo performed exceedingly well. It scanned a full-page color image in 14.4 seconds and grayscale images in 12.4 seconds, taking its place as one of the fastest models we've tested. Color-slide and negative scans also were fast, at 24.3 seconds and 52 seconds, respectively. And this was using a test bed with USB 1.1 ports; if your system has the new and quicker USB 2.0, you'll get even faster results.

The scanner's output quality was not as consistently good as its speed. The Perfection 2400 Photo captured lines and curves without distortion, and it even picked up subtle details in the dark areas of our test document. But reds and oranges consistently lacked saturation, whereas white areas took on a grayish cast. Earthier colors such as greens and flesh tones looked more realistic. When scanning transparencies, the Perfection 2400 Photo split the difference; color slides looked excellent with sharp details, but color negatives looked merely fair. Although most users will find the Perfection 2400 Photo more than adequate, those with a real photographic eye may want to step up to the Perfection 2450 Photo.

The Perfection 2400 Photo comes with a one-year warranty, typical for the category. Lifetime phone support is available Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT, but it's a toll call. The Epson Web site offers useful resources such as drivers, manuals, and FAQs.

The Perfection 2400 Photo is a good scanner for anyone with a mix of opaque and transparent documents to scan. It offers fast speeds, above-average output, and improved ease of use.

The Epson Perfection 2400 Photo delivered some of the fastest color and grayscale scans we've seen using a computer equipped with USB 1.1. (The Perfection 2400 Photo also supports the faster USB 2.0 interface.) The output quality also scored above average, especially on color-slide scans.

I really liked this scanner till I tried to use the copy center.

Pros: I really liked what this scanner did in scan-to-file mode. Colors are excellent etc. And The scanner is loaded with features. My low score for this scanner is due to the Copy Center feature.

Cons: The copy Center, which I want to use often, is for the birds. Their techie told me to scan to file first then print. That is fine, but I can do that with any scanner. In Copy mode, the printout is always covered with printed pixels giving a gray hue to th

Great Scanner Great Value

Pros: This is probably the best scanner I've ever used (although to be fair, also the newest). It can scan at really high resolutions and I haven't had any major problems with the software.

Cons: Software has a batch job mode but doesn't work to well.

Forget scanning color negatives

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this mainly to scan the thousands of slides and negatives I have stored. The problem is that when you attempt to scan a set of negatives, the software determines that several images are one, thus you have left having to crop/scan to get them seperated. Very time consuming!!

Review: I've been stuck with this message for several weeks now. Thanks to SSonnentag review I can now use my scanner. I also recently bought a new PC with only USB 2.0 ports. As suggested I plugged my old USB 1.1 hub into one of my new USB 2.0 ports and then plugged the scanner into the USB 1.1 hub. It now works!

excellent for slide and negative scans

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bought the scanner primarily for scanning old slides and negatives. Very pleased with the results compared with my old Canon 660DU which by comparison was very medeocre. The scan are very sharp and have good colour depth, although this very much depends on the quality of the source material. Quality obtained is equivalent to my Sony 3.2 megapixal digital camera and in my opinion should satisfy most home users. Only drawback is the relatively poor documentation, however, it operation is quite intuitive. I had considered the Canon CS5000f as an alternative but after my previous experience wanted to try another brand. The FARE technology offered by Canon does seem to be worth serious consideration, although other reviews that I have read seem to indicate that it has some drawbacks.

Expensive, but worth every penny

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had several scanners in the past and have been dissapointed with every one of them. This time I bit the bullet and paid more ($199) for equipment that most reviewers reported as high quality. Well, I am SO glad I listened to them. The Epson 2400 is absolutely worth penny. It was easy to install (on Windows XP) and get setup. Other people reporting problems on Windows XP may be due to using Service Pack 1. I don't know but, I sure didn't have any problems. The best things I can say about this scanner is the incredably fast speed and the automatic features. Also, the images are very crisp. The color I thought was good (the best I've ever had), but I thought they could be better for a $200 scanner. Overall, this scanner is a winner!!!

Slide scanning design defective

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a qualified negative review. The quality of flatbed scans are incredible. However, negatives and slides cannot scan to the capability of the scanner because the light hood design is defective. I've made pristine scans of negatives and slides with this unit, but not using the light hood. Using a simple HP scanjet slide adapter on the glass (with the hood up), the slide and neg. scans blow away anything you can make with the hood down. Believe it has to do with the diffuse nature of light created by the hood lamp. Anyway, because of this, the cost of this unit is not justified for the value

Cons:

Epson Printer is Required

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I thought I did all the homework in selecting a scanner. I settled on the Epson 2400 over the Canon 5000F. (This was based on reviews and comments.) I followed all the directions to install the scanner. No problems. I tried OCR, Photo, Scan all seemed to work execept "COPY". I would get a C++ runtime error every time I tried to use "COPY". I reinstalled all the software. Same results using COPY, C++ runtime error. I went to the EPSON web site and downloaded all the new drivers and a fix for the Copy function. Same results when COPY is launched C++ runtime error. All of this mucking around consumed about 8 hours of complete frustration. After loading and reloading I sent a E Mail to Epson support about the C++ runtime error. The response was very quick. The E Mail instructions were to install a EPSON print driver. Then make the "Virtual" Epson printer as the default printer when the copy function is involked. This printer requirement was not stated in the specs! Plus the CNET and ZDNet reviews made no comment on this requirement to make the copy function work. Fortunately I was able to return the scanner to Sam's Club. I have now purchased a Canon 5000F and all print functions work with my HP printer! Albeit, the Canon is a bit slower but no messing around with default printer settings. My advice to any one looking to purchae this scanner: DON'T BUY THIS SCANNER IF YOU DON'T HAVE A EPSON PRINTER!

Great Scanner even on Mac OSX

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this scanner a month ago and haven't had any problems. Scanner seems to work great on Pictures and negatives. The negatives usually need a little tweeking but come out fine with Photoshop 7.0. I downloaded the OSX Twain driver off of the Epson webpage and installed it like it said. Worked great and scan photos right into Photoshop 7.0. I only have two issues with the scanner, 1)The buttons on the front of the scanner don't work with this driver. 2)There isn't a power button! Or either I can't find it. I have to pull the plug to shut it off when not using it.

Great scanner for demanding users.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got one of these recently and have been nothing but thrilled. For a very reasonable $160 plus shipping this scanner is by far the best one I've ever used (Although it is the newest model I've ever used). It's high-resolution allows me to scan and enlarge images at high percentages and still maintain clarity and detail. The negative and film scanning are better than a lot of scanners I've used. As far as speed goes I have no complaints. It seems like most user complaints about this scanner are about compatibility. I'm running XP and have had no problems with either twain or WIA, and I believe I have it plugged into my USB 2.0 port as well. Complaints would be a lack of a good way to do batch scans. As well as a lack of any documentation. You get one book thats like a couple pages and thats it I believe.

Exceeded my expectations

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This scanner is excellent for both scanning prints/pages and film. It's also very fast compared to all the other scanners I've used. Most people I've talked to on message boards and such told me that flatbed scanner don't do that great of a job on negative. Well, I've scanned a bunch of negatives and they look excellent. I'm sure that the increase to 2400dpi helps a ton. Most cheaper dedicated film scanners don't have that much higher of a resolution. I've printed some 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 prints and they look pretty darn good. I think the only problems with the prints have to do with the color and I'm sure it has to do with the old printer I'm using. I would highly recommend the Epson 2400 to any "pro-sumer" on a budget. I was really impressed with one scan in particular. It was a portrait that was taken outside in the snow. The original print was quite washed out and you could not see a lot of detail. But on the negative scan, I got all the detail and with a little bit of color correction, it made for a beautiful print. If I would have scanned the print instead, it would not have even come close. I'm quite happy.

Weak software, weak support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Having used an AGFA scanner for years, I assumed the Epson Perfection 2400 would be a welcome upgrade. Once you muddle through the clumsy and awkward Epson software, the quality is great. However, the accompanying Epson software is a hodgepodge of confusing interfaces, especially if you need the OCR function. I don't recall ever reading the manual for my AGFA, and when you read the Epson manual, you realize that it must've been put together five minutes before the product shipped. Epson quality is great, and the features are excellent, but more often than not, you can't do what you need because the Epson software stands in the way.

great scanner for slides/negatives, price, quality can't be beat

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can't say anything negative about my Epson Perfection 2400. I use the Twain 5 driver on manual and scan slides and negatives at 1200-2400 depending on how large a print I expect to make. File size at 2400 is close to 30 mB, but I just move them to CD. Adobe Photo Elements is great for tweaking the result. Both installed flawlessly on my XP system; 700 mHz Celeron, 256 mB RAM, USB 1.1. I can't comment on support--haven't needed it.

Very nice so far but auto function flawed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Here is a copy of my email follow-up to tech support: "Hi, I followed the procedure you outlined but I am still getting the same behavior. My test photo in 5" x 7" (0.7143 h:w) in but it seems to scan in auto mode as 4 11/16" x 6 13/16" or 4.6875" x 6.8125" (0.6881 h:w). This puts the scanned image out of whack in terms of aspect ratio by 3.7%, and it is noticible. The only reason I have done such an analysis is I happen to be a software developer that deals with scanning applications so I sort of know what to look for. I read the troubleshooting FAQ and see the entry on "clipping" of the image and I can see that happenning too, but this is more of a "scrunching" or "compression" of pixels along the y-axis. Seems to work fine in manual mode."

Great on negitives of several sizes

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I upgraded from the Epson Perfection 1600SU to the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo. I loved my 1600SU but a spot of Windex glass cleaner got through the seal and stained the scanning bar at the top. All scans had a blue line in them after that. I'll be more careful with the new 2400. I read many reviews but they didn't answer some important questions about the 2400 that I wanted to know before I made the purchase. These answers. I scan lot of negatives. The Perfection 2400 Twain drivers that come with the scanner make it possible to control whatever film you want to scan within the area of the back light. ( 2.24 inches by 10 inches) I can scan any film 120mm ( 2 1/4 ) or smaller. I can scan two 35mm strips side by side if desired. There is a film holder with the scanner that will hold a strip of 35mm film and by turning it around it will hold down120mm film in the two and a quarter format. You can also lay negatives or slides directly on the glass. Originally I took a quick look at the more automatic software that comes with the scanner. But it tried to guess my needs way too much for my taste. Just change the "full auto" mode to "manual mode" when the software program is opened, and your set. The scanner installed without a hitch on my Windows XP system. But I was already familiar with Epson products and I use two Epson printers with the scanner. The printer turns itself off when not in use. I actually like this feature as compared with my Epson 1600 which had an off button. Sometimes I pushed the off button on my 1600 when I finished a scanning project and if I had not closed the software first it froze my Pain Shop Pro program and I lost my work. Now I just figure Epson knows best how often to turn off the scan bulb. I paid $169 at Costco in Feb 2003.

Newsoft Software Sucks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Previous entry: "The controlling software, "Smart Panel" is written and supported by a company called Newsoft and its an utter disaster!" Absolutely true folks. Up to this point, I had spent a week installing the perfect XP machine which had nary a single hiccup until I installed the Epson Smart Panel software by Newsoft. There must have been atleast 10 error messages during the install... "cannot find....blah, blah, blah." I am still giving this scanner a thumbs up because, in spite of the crappy third party software, the scanner's twain driver works well with my clean install of XP. I use Paint Shop Pro ver. 7.0, and acquiring the scans directly to my software works flawlessly, so I'm happy. I'd much rather be working within and sending from my graphics software, rather than from the moronic "smart" panel that New Soft tries to install. The price from Costco was right at $169.00.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The scanner is very fast. Scans seem of high quality for both photos and slides. Great scanner, weak drivers.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This scanner is capable of spectacular results, even from negatives and positive film. I have two (one at work, one at home) and have had frustrating driver problems with them on Windows 2000 machines. On one I upgraded to Photoshop 7 and lost the scanner. On the other my Epson 1270 printer seems to have caused an unrecoverable corruption. Epson support was able to help me, eventually, with one but the other still does not work 3 weeks later. Be sure to download the latest drivers for best results. They correct more issues than the description would indicate. On Windows XP and Windows ME machines, I have had no problems and fantastic results.

moronic support staff

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am unable to install the included photoshop elements. Rather than making a toll call to Adobe I asked for assistance on the Epson web site. Got a fairly prompt response telling me in detail how to unistall and re-install the twain driver. When I responded saying this had nothing whatsoever to do with the problem got another response with an even fancier way to uninstall and re-install the twain software. Clearly they work from scripts that they do not understand. For scanning photos the scanner is actually very nice, easy to use, good color and fast. Scanning slides is iffy. Sometimes a scan will work, sometimes it gets lost in never, never land.

Works finc with XP and Copy Function Works as Well

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Not sure what is causing some people to have problems with this scanner on XP as it is working great for me. Ditto for the Copy button, you have to configure it but it does a scan and sends it to my Canon i850 with no problems. You can get a better scan in my opinion by doing a Manual Scan from from Epson's Twain driver and setting up for the scan yourself. Negatives scan well but will only be as good as your source. Some 400 speed negs I had didn't look that great but I scanned some Kodak Portra 160 (professional film) and the scans will make nice 8x10's For those new to scanning if doing a negative or slide set the scanner 2400 dpi and 24bit and if your negative is good so will your scan. Print enlargements can be made from 4x6 snapshots at either 600 or 1200dpi (a great looking print scanned at 600 will give a nice 8x10 and the file is not to big) As for the color problems some are having, no scanner will give perfect color on every scan. There are plenty of resonably priced tools to adjust brightness, contrast an color. (Adobe Photo Elements, Ulead Photoimpact) The color tools from within any Twain Driver are going to be limited. That said most of the time this if you set the Twain driver for "Auto" on color from the Manual Twain scan the color is great or very close. I tested this scanner against a Microtek 5900 and the Epson is quite a bit faster and anyone who thinks the Epson Driver is hard to figure out should check out Microtek's ScanWizard (its very complicated) I find Epsons Twain Driver to be simple but effective. My motherboard only has USB 1.1 but the scanner does scans at 300dpi and below lightning fast, 600-1200 are very quick for this resolution. If you are doing negatives at 2400dpi then select all you want and come back in a few minutes. Any scanner will be slow on this however. No scanner is perfect, but for the $179 (Sam's) I paid I think its a bargain. My System is: WinXP Pro Epox 8K3A+ (AMD KT333 chipset) AMD 1900+ 256mb PC2700

Frustrating and no help

Pros:

Cons:

Review: To make this short and simple, I was very disapointed in this product. Although the quality of the scans on pictures was very good. Trying to scan negatives and slides was a nightmare. Because of the lack of information on how to these features was non-existant in the manuel and on the web sight, I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out on my own. In fact, the downloads of the manuel offered by epson only included basic advertising and no detail on how to use the scanner. When I could got it working, it only scans negatives 1 frame at a time (if you are lucky). Also, you must spend a lot of time making the negative is straight to get a proper scan because there is no pocket or grove to keep it straight. I thought the software that came with the scanner was very poor and difficult to work with. You had to invest a lot of time to figure it out how to get it to scan to your preferences. Also, I had problems when I loaded the software in terms of error messages. The downloads that were offered did nothing. I was very disapointed in this product which was so highly recomended. I am returning it and maybe investing in a another company for a scanner

1 Word- Excellent

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Don't know what the negative reviews are talking about, it works fine with XP. They must work for other scanner companies. Prints, slides and documents all reproduced with excellent results. Highly recommend this scanner, I have had 3 other brands in the past and this one beats all of them. Just check out some of the digital photo web sites for their reviews and see for yourself. Nothing beats it in the price range.

Kicks some serious butt!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After reading some of the reviews and noticing the requirement that it be connected to a computer that has an OEM OS (or an upgrade from an OEM OS) I had some trepidation about buying this scanner. I have a homebuilt PIII running Win98SE installed from an upgrade CD, and have never had any other OS on this machine. My worries were for nothing, as the software installed without any errors, and has worked perfectly since day one. Don't believe the people that say you can only copy to an Epson printer - I have a Samsung ML1430, and the copy function works perfectly. Also, I've had absolutely no problems with the Twain driver or the Smart Panel software. As far as scanning quality goes, I give it a thumbs up. It's fast and, to my eye, the color quality is good. The only problem I've encountered so far is with the automatic thumbnailing feature when scanning some negatives. The shots I was scanning were taken in a nightclub and contained a lot of black, and this seemed to confuse the software so it cut off the negatives in the wrong place. As has been said before, Costco seems to have the best price - I got it for $200. Can't comment on support because I haven't needed it.

Good scanner for phot prints, but not negatives

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this, so I could scan some of my photos, negatives, and slides. This product does a good job on a postive prints (pictures and slides) but not so good on negative, the color was off, too much yellow. I had ran into one problem that scanner could not scan a 8x10 portrait that has white back ground and hazy filter was used. scanned multiple times but allways scans crooked, I finally got it to work by placing some object next to the picture. some how scanner gets confused. other than that it's working pretty good form me. at this price I do not expect to do all the wonders.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Set-up was incredibly easy. Was up and running within minutes. Works perfectly with my XP, scans are beautiful. Even though this is my first scanner, I'm glad I waited. Got it at a great price from Costco, $169. All I can say is WOW.

Good Hardware, impossible software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had this scanner for two weeks. Tomorrow it goes back to the retailer. The control software (Smart Panel) is so poorly designed, it makes even the simplest tasks a multi-step hoop jumping excercise. The copy function will only work with epson printers. Unacceptable in the world we live in today.

Random florescent colors

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can scan the same picture or photo negative 4 times with the same settings and get 4 different results. 3 out of 4 times, extreme dark or extreme light areas of the photo/negative will come out a florescent red or blue or green. Returned the scanner and bought another with same results. Tech suppt said uninstall/reinstall drivers and if that didn't fix the problem, the scanner must be broke, but I suppose the problem could be with my computer. AMD K6-333, 128MB RAM, 40 GB HD, USB 2.0 card.

Easy to use and good quality output.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Scans color photos good and copies forms good. This is my third scanner in the last two months and this is a keeper. I was getting tired of returning scanners. This is my first Epson scanner. I have factory installed Windows XP and a usb 2.0 port. Easy installation and starts off without any glitches. Bought it at Cosco for $200.00.

Make sure you can return it without cost/hassle

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was impressed with the features and the price so I ignored the reviews that warned about the software. Software wouldn't install properly on my new Pentium IV/XP Home machine and as a result no functions were operational. Epson support at website offers no help and there is no toll free line. Glad I read the earlier reviews and therefore bought mine at Costco where it was returned without hassle or cost.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: What a nice product! It installed in my XP without a hitch (sixteen minutes for installation).Couple minutes later my Epson 1200 printer created a flawless photo from a scanned 35mm print in Auto mode. Then I used 35mm neg. and proceeded again, to my surprise a nice photo, matched both prints with photos, nice job! Didn't use photoshop either .I can rest my digital and start using my 35mm again for neg?

A perfect fit

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have almost been nothing but happy with this scanner. I bought a Perfection 1250 at Fry's for $170 and then found the 2400 for $200 at Costco and decided to spend an extra $30 to quadruple the resolution. The software that comes with the system looks nice, but I couldn't get it to work with my Mac running OS X. I also didn't install the Photoshop Elements software as I already had Photoshop. After some searching online I found the necessary Twain driver and have had no problems since. I've been launching the Twain from Photoshop with no issues. The Twain interface is actually very good and fits my needs well. Scanning both color negative and color positive film, I've found the output to be a little blue/cyan for my tastes, but overall very good. I am mostly scanning my archive of slides and the Perfection 2400 has fit the bill nicely.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have BIG problem with the twain driver running under win2k pro. It is unstable. The twain accquire software hang could not be re-opened after you use and close it. Need reboot to get it back to work. This is the worst scanner I have used. The image quality is very good, comparable to image quality deliver by pro scanner. The speed seems fast. I would not recommend this scanner due to the software problems.

fast scanner

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My old scanner became uselss because I forgot to save the drivers when I installed XP to replace my old OS so I figured I might as well buy a new scanner. My old scanner was super slow so it was a pain to use so this time around I decided that was the feature I wanted the most. This scanner was fast so I was really happy. The quality of the scans was good. The only problem I had with it was the size. Seems more bulky than necessary but it was easy to hook up. I bought mine at buy.com with free shipping for about $206.

This Scanner ROCKS!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been waiting a long time for a scanner that did well at both photo and negative scanning, and this one fits the bill! For comparison, I formerly used an HP DeskScan (1200 dpi), but I was not happy with the scan speed, the negative adapter, or the scan quality (especially the negative scans). For my first experiment with the Epson 2400, I scanned a 4x5 photo at 400 dpi, then I scanned the negative for the same photo at 2400 dpi. The photo scan was impressively fast and good quality. The negative adapter was not described at all in the documentation, but it was easy to figure out and I was *STUNNED* by the quality of the scan. I AM SO HAPPY WITH THIS SCANNER!

All you could ask for!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Purchased 10/29 took a few minutes to hook it up, &load software. WIthin minutes I was making my first scan - a school portrait of my son. Colors were fantastic. The Adobe Elements software is great. I like the "Smart Panel" program. My wife can use it easily. She is not computer literate but this scanner was a breeze. This would be a great choice for a new person into scanning. This is my fourth scanner and the best. Epson has a winner here.

Perfect scanner for the money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: We have a $1400 Epson at my work that's 2 years old. The 2400 out performs it in every aspect exept speed. But at home who cares how fast it is! It is the best scanner for home use on the market. I print photo quality pictures of my son with NO problems. Software is great, in manual mode. Every and I mean every scanner has to have it's output tweaked to be perfect!

Image quality is poor

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Got it from CostCo for $199. The same photos scanned using either negative or 4x6 print result in poor image quality (compared the scanned images by CostCo's Kodak CD): (1). Color balance is off - too much red. (2). Image details are lost regardless of the pixel density or color depth chosen. They should have done a better job calibrating the scanner, or at least give the user a standard sheet and software to calibrate it. I am hezitating whether to return it to CostCo.

Dog slow software on MacOS 9

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this scanner to replace a retired Umax scanner. The Epson Perfection 2400 looks great. Seems to scan fast. But the software is incredibly sluggish, overiding any speed gained from the hardware. If I only needed to attach it to my Windows XP laptop it might be fine. But I have to connect it to my MacOS 9 machine. The scans, when you finally ge them are beautiful, but this machine overall underperforms a scanner that cost $95 four years ago. I'm going to take this scanner back.

Software From Hell

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The controlling software, "Smart Panel" is written and supported by a company called Newsoft and its an utter disaster. Smart Panel installed improperly, failed to uninstall properly, and won't reinstall at all because it must uninstall prior reinstallation, but it can't uninstall properly(classic Catch-22). This software is fatal for this product and will cause you frustration and failure. If you want to buy against my advice, don't buy this Epson online else risk a return hassle nor would I buy it at a store with a restocking fee. If I get it to work, I'll review the 2400 again.

Very good scanner but epson software should be better

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have an epson perfection scanner photo 2400 (269 euros incl taxes in France)with an AMD 1600 XP, 256 Mo DDR, USB 1.1. It's very good and fast scanner but you have to take care about the automatic scan setting in the previsualisation frame : you really need to increase color saturation and brightness before complete scan. Then you will get excellent results even with color slides and films. (as good as epson 2450 sold 485 euros!).

Scan to Copy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use a scanner to do 95% of the faxing. I was given a procedure to follow by Epson Support. Use the copy function then select fax as output device. When I selected the copy function, I got a runtime error. Working with Support, I found out my hp photosmart 1215 will not work with the copy function. I was told all printers were not covered by the software. The work around was to copy to file and print file. Before buying this scanner, check to see if it is compatable with your printer.

Fantastic Scanner for the Price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Unbelievable value for only 199??!?! This scanner does a pretty flawless job scanning my photos and negatives. I'm not a fan of the Smart Panel that is provided. Well I guess you can't expect much since it is free bundled software. I rather just scan from photoshop. People who complain about scan to fax or email , just send it as an attachment. Its really not too hard, that extra 10 seconds won't hurt. You might even lose a few calories in the process. The copy utility, epson has a work around... it works with hp printers.. once again not many people can take that extra 10 seconds to make the adjustments needed. Lets make this simple.. this is a scanner, not a freakin fax machine, photocopier, or some sort of email machine. It scans your images. That's it.. plain and simple. What you want to do with that image afterwards is up to you. Go send it as an attachment, go open it up in a application and press print. Don't expect the world. As for mac osx, yeah, there are no drivers for it, and all other companies neither have them. Except for beta drivers, epson has beta drivers available on their developer page. Mac osx is simply not ready yet. And its taking an awfully long time.... but i can manage for now. But bottom line, this is real deal bang for the buck scanner.

High Quality Scans Easy!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The scanner is really great. It took me under 10 minutes to install the software (I'm running XP Pro), plug in the scanner, and scan my first picture. The software works great with Windows XP, and I was really happy with the results of the scanning. The USB 2.0 interface really rocks, as the scans came out blindgly fast. I don't know what the people are talking about who say that the can't find the product. There was a stack of 40 of them at the CostCo in my Chicago neighborhood. Even the local CDW sells them too. The one I picked up at CostCo was only 199 bucks! Whoo hoo!

Epson tech says dahhhhhhh

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have a xp os on my computer and the soft wear does not work with other than epson printers. When you open the copy utility it dissapears in about 2 sec. After calling Epson tech and finding they dont know anything about prob I called New Soft and was told that every time you want to use the copy utility you would have to go to your printer properties and change it to choose a printer other than the HP that I have and than back when your done. also the e-mail would not send till you manually open the e-mail program. I read in another review that others were having fogged glass on the bottom where it could not be cleaned (kind of like what forms on inside of windsheild of a car. I had it on the first one I bought and returned it for new one at Costco but new one was like it also. You cant see it till the scanner lite comes on from under glass. Epson blamed New Soft (the software maker) and New Soft blamed Epson. Im taking second one back till Epson gets their act together and sends out clean glass and fixed soft. The little I used it showed good quality scans and very quite operation. It has hispeed 2.0 usb and good resolution along with slide and neg scanning it looks good on paper but not in use.

Quality Product, Easy to Operate, Excellent Performance!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After looking at the reviews for this item, I almost dismissed it before even taking a look at it. At the time, there were 12 reviews and the feedback was running about 50/50 between positive and negative. Then I took a closer look and noticed that only one or two of the reviewers had actually used the product! Most of them were griping because they hadn’t even been able to find one! The scanners were selling out as soon as they hit the stores! I decided I’d better go check it out for myself. I needed a scanner that could scan great photos, that would be easy to use for scanning my old slide collection, and that would also produce good documents without having to correct half the words. The Epson 2400 does all of this and makes it look like child’s play. The only thing I could have wished for would be a printed manual that I could hold in my own 2 hands instead of having to read it on the computer. Fortunately, the scanner is so intuitive that I have hardly had to read anything. However, there is a printed folder for setting up the scanner, and this is very well written and easy to follow. Even a technologically challenged person such as myself had it up and scanning within a few minutes. The other thing I like is that this scanner can read my mind a whole lot better than my husband. It automatically knows exactly what you are scanning and makes all the necessary adjustments for optimum quality. If you prefer, you can also manually adjust your own settings, but I haven’t even needed to use that feature. Just insert the item to be scanned, push one button to determine where to send it, then sit back and relax. Forget about running to the kitchen for a beer…..you’re not going to have time!

p.s. here's a c.c. of a letter to EA HQs:

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Thank you for taking the time to review my complaint. Hopefully, by resolving this issue, EA will be able to offer a more reliable product to the public, while accommodating other EA customers. The Epson Perfection 1650 is a beautiful scanner with one major flaw: it doesn’t support faxing. Moreover, Epson automated support, Epson store, Epson technical support, and Epson America corporate headquarters do not support faxing using this scanner. I have called 562 276 1300/4382, 800 922 8911, 800 463 7766, and 562 981 3840 regarding this issue, and searched for “fax” in the Epson online FAQ’s with no results. The tragedy here is that the people who manufactured this scanner are going to get a bad reputation because the software developers, NewSoft, dropped the ball. Adding insult to injury is NewSoft’s claim that “fax is not supported” by their software, but should be supported by a “third party,” and that I should contact Microsoft, or search for fax support somewhere else. Microsoft position on faxing clearly states: “To fax a document 1. In any Windows-based program that contains a Print command, click File, and then click Print to open the Print dialog box. 2. Select the fax printer, and then click Print … “ My Win2000 PC has a modem, and fax is fully supported. The problem is that the “Windows-based program,” the Epson Smart Panel by NewSoft is not supporting fax. The point of failure is NewSoft. Their Smart Panel is the program that is not conforming to Microsoft standards. To own a scanner, a modem, and an operating system that fully supports fax while not being able to fax is beyond normal human comprehension. But to deny that a problem exists, to shirk responsibility, and then to place the blame elsewhere for your shortcomings is an insidious marketing ploy that is not going to be tolerated by the consumer. “Working around the problem” by selecting the fax as the default printer, and using the Smart Panel’s “Copy” button will not support multiple page faxes. Using the “Scan to File” button, opening the file with an application, then printing to fax does not support multiple page faxes. Can someone at Epson please tell me how to fax a ten-page document using the Perfection 1650 without having to send ten separate faxes? Sincerely, ‘Jack’ Mazuji hmazuji@hotmail.com
