"Great Scanner, but..."
Summary: I've been using my Epson Perfection 2450 Photo for well over a year now, and it has worked flawlessly. I have used it with Windows 2000 Pro as well as with Windows XP Pro. Recently I upgraded my computer from an Athlon-based setup to a Pentium 4 3.06GHz. My new computer only has USB 2.0 ports while the old Athlon system only had USB 1.1. I am running Windows XP (as before) with the latest Epson drivers (5.71 I think) and every time I try to use the scanner I get the error: "Epson Twain 5 Error: Scanner failed to send image during scan." Quickly putting two and two together I realized that the only difference, as far as the scanner was concerned, was the new USB 2.0 vs. the old USB 1.1. So I plugged my old USB 1.1 hub into one of my new USB 2.0 ports and then plugged the scanner into the USB 1.1 hub. Voila! It works like a charm! So I have come to the conclusion that either Epson has a bunch of totally incompetent tech support personnel working for them or they are too dishonest to admit they have a USB 2.0 compatibility problem even though they advertise the Epson Perfection 2450 Photo as a USB 2.0 compatible device. Either way, I have lost a great deal of respect for Epson through this. Nonetheless, the 2450 Photo scanner makes excellent quality scans with great color, contrast and saturation. The built-in transparancy scanning capability with included slide and negative templates work great as well. So overall I don't think you can beat this scanner for the money, even with it's USB 2.0 flaw.
