"Good and cheap but..."
Summary: I hate the auto-adjust-everything. There's no way to turn it off. For example, I was once scanning a dark-coloured picture, and it took it that I was scanning in grayscale. You can change the output back, but it becomes a pain when you try to scan a whole book. It also doesn't remember settings. Oh well. That's what you get when you buy the cheapest HP scanner you could find. But on the positive note, the drivers are tried-and-true HP idiot-proof. The visual installation guide is amazing, either the large sheet or the computer based version. I originally purchased an Epson scanner, but the CD drivers were worthless, the same with the ones I found online (with a lot of searching...). That was with a Windows ME machine. With XP, the original drivers on CD did not work, but after less then 10 minutes of surfing at HP.com, I found the update, and it worked great! My major beef is that the cheapo Adobe photo software won't work with the new drivers, at least for me, anyways. But anyone who's going to "play" with photos better upgrade the Adobe software REAL quick. The only worthwhile feature I found was the red-eye reduction. For the last complaint: WHat the Hell is HP doing by charging 25$ for a tech call and giving only a 90 DAY warranty? If you feel comfortable enough with your computer and looking for a low-end, reliable scanner, then the ScanJet 2200c is plenty for you. (I've owned my 2200c for 2 years now)
