Pros Saves space, very versatile
Cons Keep the drivers up to date
Summary I had similar problems with banding UNTIL I contacted HP technical support and they referred me to a new driver. I downloaded the new software and drivers, reinstalled them all, and voila, a great scanner with great printouts! I am so happy now that I picked up the baby brother version (HP 4600) on special at a local office supply chain, and now I use it as a portable scanner with my laptop. I love how I can just lay the scanner on a book or other larger item and it scans great.
"Great scanner!"on by triker13
Pros Very easy to use, low noise when scanning, software was easy to use and navigate. Looks fantastic and frees up space!
Cons Reproduction of color printed material was a bit grainy.
Summary What a fabulous scanner! I am a graphic designer and working in prepress on Kodak drum scanners and flatbeds. For home, I use my scanner all the time. I really like that you can see what you are scanning and how it is placed, plus it scans large bulky items by simply lifting and placing it on the item, I haven't had a scanner yet that can do that. Even the large industry $45,000+ scanners you have a hard time getting a good scan without cutting the page out (not always an option). This scanner, lift and place; awesome!
Very silent compared to the other fax sounding close top models most are used to. And it's fun to see the scanner work too.
Reproduction of printed magazine material is a bit grainy, but then I haven't yet tried it on sharp high dpi books; so that may be the fact of magazines sometimes using newprint quality paper and lower dpi settings for printing. Needless to say the scans I had when put to 300 dpi (mine defaulted to 200 dpi)and made a few blur adjustments in Photoshop, they were print ready.
HP Director software is easy to use and has several options to alter the scan before doing the final scan. Nice. Didn't install the scan altering software that comes with it (I use Photoshop...bit of a bias I guess). I also updated the drivers at HPs website which I think helps with overall look of scans.
In summary, Great looks, price, and overall convenience with scan quality. I think this will be hard to replace in my home!
Pros The quality of the images at any resolution and scaling are excellent. With low resolution and normal scaling, the scans are very fast and still maintain quality. Vertical scanning with a clear glass cover allows you to compare scan with original, saving
Cons The HTML based software can be difficult to work with, and is very slow even on fast machines. The scanner is so good that some images are difficult to scan. (What we see and what actually is on the page are two different things.) For instance, I could no
Pros great design
Cons BANDING/STRIPING PROBLEMS
Summary i've bought and returned 5 of this scanner (both 4600 and 4670). all with the same problem with the banding no matter what i scan and it's not just on the image but the whole scan area. i'm on a mac powerbook g4 with all the trimmings and latest os.
hp support is useless and all they can do is replace. but after a few of this nonsense, i made them refund everything. but since i love the design so much i thought if i just start over and maybe i'll get lucky. no such luck. i just opened mine and it's the same problem so i'm packing it right up and getting something else.
Pros Sleek and cool looking. Looks nice on your desk or bookshelf. See through scanner, lets you see exactly what you are scanning.
Cons Horribly slow software that can be troublesome to install. Had to install it 3 times to get the scanner to work properly. I am a computer technician and software developer, so consider myself tech savvy. I have had three HP scanners, the software has i
