"Great scanner!"
Pros: Very easy to use, low noise when scanning, software was easy to use and navigate. Looks fantastic and frees up space!
Cons: Reproduction of color printed material was a bit grainy.
Summary: What a fabulous scanner! I am a graphic designer and working in prepress on Kodak drum scanners and flatbeds. For home, I use my scanner all the time. I really like that you can see what you are scanning and how it is placed, plus it scans large bulky items by simply lifting and placing it on the item, I haven't had a scanner yet that can do that. Even the large industry $45,000+ scanners you have a hard time getting a good scan without cutting the page out (not always an option). This scanner, lift and place; awesome!
Very silent compared to the other fax sounding close top models most are used to. And it's fun to see the scanner work too.
Reproduction of printed magazine material is a bit grainy, but then I haven't yet tried it on sharp high dpi books; so that may be the fact of magazines sometimes using newprint quality paper and lower dpi settings for printing. Needless to say the scans I had when put to 300 dpi (mine defaulted to 200 dpi)and made a few blur adjustments in Photoshop, they were print ready.
HP Director software is easy to use and has several options to alter the scan before doing the final scan. Nice. Didn't install the scan altering software that comes with it (I use Photoshop...bit of a bias I guess). I also updated the drivers at HPs website which I think helps with overall look of scans.
In summary, Great looks, price, and overall convenience with scan quality. I think this will be hard to replace in my home!
