    "Okay for pictures, awful for documents"

    Summary: Unlike other reviewers, I found that the 5400c produced good (though not wonderful) photo scans -- quite reasonable for the price. For documents, however, the scanner is dreadful. Auto-exposure is invariably way too light; attempts to darken the image produce artifacts around the letters. The software is mediocre at best: it's missing the critical "Rotate N degrees" feature (only includes multiples of 90 degrees).
