"The document scanner of choice for SO/HO."
Pros
Fast; high-quality scans; ADF usually works very well.
Cons
Expensive; HP Director software is obtuse; ADF needs cleaning at least weekly. The scanner's buttons don't work in WinXP until you download a patch from HP's site.

This is my third scanner, and the first one really intended for documents. The included Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is fast, and usually works very well, even with double-sided scanning (which it handles impressively). However, it needs to be cleaned at least weekly, depending on the volume of work. In a busy small office, I would imagine this would be more like every other day. But HP makes alcohol-soaked cleaning sheets that the user simply feeds in like any other paper, and that usually do an adequate cleaning job after 1-2 passes. The only cheaper document scanners I've seen, at least that scan both sides of the source documents automatically, don't include flat-bed capability, or are considerably slower. You can make PDFs with the included software. This seems to be the one, for now.
