Pros Will make a reasonably good boat anchor if used in shallow water with no wind on a small Jon boat.
Cons Spent two days talking to various HP support including a case manager. The predecessor to this unit at 2 to 3yrs old is so obsolete it will not work with my recently purchased HP laptop with Windoz7.
Summary Even when I proposed such a last ditch work around as setting up duel boot with XP no one would say if it might work. There is no place in all of HP corporation that has a copy of XP that could be installed. Microserve's validation system well not let me install XP from an old unit I scrapped. (HP does provide upgraded drivers for XP and below.)
In desperation I connected the scanner to an old desk top that it had once worked on. I was told the driver was no longer working. (on screen message.) I was not about to re-enter the minimal support system.
I have seen the work this scanner did at one time. It was not great but met expectations. The current version might work as well but be sure you can do without an upgrade of hardware or software for the life of the product.
At one time HP provided both quality products and a reasonable level of support. If you don't need either it does have a nice price point.
Side Note: while you are on hold for long periods you will hear they won an award for being best by an association of tech support companies. It would appear the award was for best kicking the problem to other departments. HP laptop support does not help with scanner issues including lack of drivers to install on the laptop. The scanner department looks up serial number and tells you the warranty has expired call the laptop support for software issues on the laptop.
"Waste of money"on by csbechtold
Pros None that I could find, but to find them would have required the software to operate properly and/or HP to have ANY type of support for this product.
Cons See above.... Bought to scan 20 year old slides. After 6 hours I was finally able to get it to actually produce a scan that was worth saving - only now I don't know where it is because it didn't go into the file I saved it to.
Summary I have several hundred slides to scan. I won't be doing it on this unit I will return this unit ti Staples and put the money towards paying someone to put these on a disc for me. Don't waste your money. I did scan a photo with it, did a nice job BUT no better then the quality of the scan on my multi-function. If you are looking for reliability, ease of use, etc, don't count on it from HP. They have proven that, once again, once you bought it you are on your own.
Pros Very good colors and resolution
Cons Lot of problems with HP Scanning software and no support
Summary 1. Software crashes with "Unexpected internal error" message.
2. The de-installation does not work properly. If you de-install the SW, after the re-installation it would not work. In my case the scanner is visible in the Windows Device manager but HP software says there is no scanner connected. Trying to resolve the issue I re-installed the Windows (OS) few times completely.
3. The infrared dust and scratch removal for negative films works properly on 300dpi only. With 1200+ dpi it crashes. Sometimes it is possilbe to get the result. In those cases I couldn't say it doesn't work at all. It is possible to find slight differences on the huge dust spots but in general I could report that the results are invisible
4. I got a lot of troulbes with Russian service center. It took more than month to discuss the issues with different engineers. It was no results. The last recommendation was to replace the scanner by the refurbished one. It tooks some time but the second scanner had exactly the same issues. It was again replaced by one more refurbished which works absolutely the same way as the first two. It is about 3 moths from the last replacement. The issue is not resolved. The information what has been done in those three months is not provided.
I damn the day when I bought this toy
Pros Color matches my Computer
Cons HP downloads only get you to basic operation. No neg. coping no slide copying
Summary Nice scanner if I could use it on my new computer.
Pros Best scanner I've ever owned. Gets the job done on prints, slides and negatives and old fashioned silver dep. ones - all for low volume archive purposes. I got this scanner after much research. For $160 who can complain?
Cons Why do all scanners have hazing on the underside of the print copy glass when you buy them???
Summary Best scanner I've ever owned. For $160 who can complain? If you want dedicated high volume hardware - just a negative scanner will cost you many times this. As for print scanners - this is the best one. Just to get things in perspective - a 1870 print of my great grandfather is deteriorating. Do I send it off to the local Museum or to eArchiveuroldprints? You gotta be kidding! I scan at max res - file nearly 2Gb in size took over an hour to a Tiff file. Editing in Nikon Capture NX2 approx. 4 hours - still not happy - further hours over the next couple of weeks - Result - a restored blue pigment print, a sepia and a true B&W print. Printed out on Gallery paper and sent to relatives plus a DVD - in albums and framed for important people like close family. My Great grandfather deserves the best before his image fades forever.
I couldn't have done this with the HP3970 or the microtek scanner I have. Just not enough detail to play with
