The NeatReceipts scanner is a slim, harmonica-shaped device that measures 10.8 inches by 1.6 inches by 1.3 inches (WDH) and weighs a light 10.6 ounces. You feed pages up to 8.5 inches wide through one side of the device, and they come out the back. This scanner connects to a Windows PC via its USB 2.0 port through the included cable, and it comes with receipt-management software, a carrying pouch, a plastic base stand, and a wall-mounting device. We recommend using the wall mount, as you'll need plenty of clearance to scan those long slips of paper and prevent crooked paper feeds; with the scanner affixed to a wall, you can pop a recycling bin underneath to catch the receipts. (The IRS accepts scanned receipts, so you can dispose of yours once they're digitized--as long as you back up your files!)
Installing the NeatReceipts software is quick and easy, thanks to a well-written installation guide and the CD's helpful tutorials, which walk you through the layout of the software and hardware. The basic protocol: Hook up the scanner to your computer and launch the software, slide a receipt into the scanner, then click the prominently displayed Scan button within the program's main interface.
The software is organized into four main screens: Receipt Manager creates a one-line database entry for each receipt you scan, Expense Reports lets you create a new report into which you enter receipts, Drag And Drop lets you drag the receipts between windows, and Document Manager lets you scan other documents such as utility bills or contracts. The genius of the NeatReceipts software lies in its ability to search scanned receipts for common fields such as date of purchase, total, payment method, and vendor name. Once you've scanned a receipt, its image shows up in the Receipt Manager window, and data such as vendor name and amount appear to the right. Receipt Manager tallies each line automatically and keeps a running total along the bottom of the screen.
Because the software organizes receipts and generates expense reports, you can keep track of receipts for a tax year, a month of expenditures, or a specific business trip. Once you've scanned your receipts, you can drag them into an expense report, e-mail them to someone else who uses NeatReceipts, or export them as HTML or Rich Text format or to programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Money; Intuit Quicken and QuickBooks; and Adobe Acrobat.

Of course, this software does have limitations; it will recognize any vendor already listed among the 500 in its database, but you must manually enter any unknown vendor. Once you've done that, however, NeatReceipts recognizes the vendor and autocompletes this field. The software is hopeless, however, at recognizing data from faded receipts, from noncomputerized cash registers (which means most mom-and-pop shops), and from those tiny receipts on shiny paper from the gas-station pump. In these cases, you can type the information, which, thanks to the software's autocomplete skills, consumes little time.
The scanner's default resolution is 300dpi, which makes for good quality scans so that the software can parse the data. The engine can scan text and images at up to 600dpi, and it works with any TWAIN-based imaging programs. NeatReceipts claims that its device will scan a receipt in about 10 seconds, but we found that if you factor in the software recognition time, actual scan speeds are closer to 25 to 40 seconds for big-box-retailer receipts of average length.
NeatReceipts comes with a one-year warranty that includes free phone support, but it's a toll call. Phone support hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday ET; e-mail support is available during these hours as well as on weekends. When we sent a few e-mail questions about the device to the support address, we got a reply in a matter of hours.

Too bad it only works 25% of the time
Pros: Fast, cute, small, easy - good scans when it works, which leads me to the cons...
Cons: Unfortunately, it fails to scan the majority of the time. Lots and lots and LOTS of blank pages in my library.

No customer support, no phone support, no chat support.
Pros: Ok it's cute.
Cons: Customer Support is a joke. Founder's response on CNET, including his personal e-mail address he gives, is false.
After a couple of rounds on the company's tech-s support website, I only got to the point where I could submit a ticket. After a canned response, I updated the ticket, and twice since then, with absolutely no response. Shame on Neatco.

Their customer service department is AWFUL
Pros: The machine itself is amazing IF it works properly. I had better luck on a PC than I did with their mac version, but because I can't seem to get my issues resolved with their customer service department, I am no longer using the unit.
Cons: Customer Service Department STINKS! I have been emailing them for OVER 2 YEARS and have still not yet had my issues resolved. They keep running me in circles. I asked them to replace the device. Nope. I asked for information to contact the CEO. Nope

Neat gadget saves time works great. Travels well.
Pros: Small, compact and very easy to use. I carry it with me on my weekly business trips. At the hotel, I plug it into my laptop and empty my wallet of receipts from the previous week and scan them all into one folder of expenses for last weeks trip. easy
Cons: Sometimes the scanner rollers don't grip the slick shiny paper of some receipts and it misfed. Not a big, deal as I can immediately delete the scan and try again. The OCR reader software doesn't recognize fancy fonts of some stores i.e Hudson News
I actually like scanning a bunch of receipts at one time and then "filing" them into folders I create in the software. My accountant likes that I keep my personal receipts in electronic format and provide them to her electronically.
I just hired a part-time book keeper to enter myvery small company expenses into Quickbooks. I have about 2 months of receipts I scanned to give to her electronically. She lives quite a distance away and not having to snail mail her paper would be wonderful time saver. We will soon see how this works with QB.
I also use it to scan documents. I keep property tax bills, paper letters from companies, even warranty cards from products I buy. I keep them in a documents folder within Neat Receipts.
Finally, I had a stack of business cards rubber banded together in my desk drawer. I was never very good at entering the contact info into Outlook. So last weekend I took the stack out of the drawer and started scanning them. I finished the stack in about 1 hour but found a problem. The OCR software doesn't recognize fancy fonts. Some companies business card layouts are not easily read if they have flowing type faces, graphics, or have background colors which hide the text. I learned a lesson. My next set of business cards will have a very simple typeface, no background colors and a very simple layout. I guess IBM and many companies that use a plain white card with ariel or times roman type knew this awhile ago. Once the cards were scanned and I corrected or added data, I exported the whole bunch to Outlook. Then I synched my mobile phone to Outlook and all the contacts are now in my phone. Sweet deal.
Bottom line is it's not a perfect product. It works great for scanning receipts, business cards and documents.

Scanner good but Software v4.0 SP3 is terrible
Pros: Scanner works great very easy to configure
Cons: The software v4.0 SP3 is absolutely terrible, very nonuser friendly. Version 3.0 was very good, but they ruin the program when they went to 4.0 removing some very good functionality.

Completely Useless Software
Pros: Slick scanner, but should have had the scanning surface on top so one can see the receipt as it goes in to the scanner
Cons: Very Slow software
Poorly designed and difficult if not impossible to modify data base
OCR is poor
Cannot change date recognition
Autosize column width has to be reset at each startup
etc. etc.....
Once you get a few hundred receipts in to the system it slows down to the point of being completely useless.
I have no experiences with the newer versions of the scanner and software, but if my experiences are any indication, I would stay away from them as well.

NeatReceipts: beware of this product!
Pros: easy to use
Cons: I bought the Neat Receipts scanner device in 2006, with great expectations. It has been a huge disappointment and I think this product is a ripoff.
It is very slow - takes a long time to enter each item
Does not evenly feed receipts so you have to guide each one by hand
Fails to assign type of store properly, eg a hardware store purchase came out as ?Telecom?
Most of all, it locked up my computer or failed to enter any data AND locked up MicroSoft Office Word as well, giving ?Neat Receipts Error?
You cannot find where NeatReceipts has stored data on your computer so it's hard to retrieve files
It would be a LOT faster and more reliable to enter data by hand into an Excel spreadsheet
I think this product is a total ripoff! I paid about $200 for it.

Great product!
Pros: This was a lifesaver for me. Neat Receipts made it much easier keep track of all of my insurance receipts from a huge flood loss.
Cons: The scanner is slow and it often doesn't recognize all of the receipt information so you end up having to enter some of the data on your own. I wish it would recognize each item on the receipt -- that would be ideal.

Very bad experience for us
Pros: Once running, it does what it says it will do.
Cons: Downloading took forever. Several failed attempts, even with customer support.
I could never recommend this product. For $130, it should be plug & play.

This program is a Mac disaster.
Pros: Sometimes works.

Cons: I really have no qualms with Neatreciepts except for my it still has no software compatible to 64 bit but that is coming

Nice scanner, software doesn't quite work with MS Money
Pros: Scanner is compact and easy to use
Works with MS Outlook for business cards
Great price ($150 at Costco)
Cons: Software doesn't quite work with MS Money
To use this product with MS Money, after scanning my receipts, I have to:
1. Select which receipts to send over to an .OFX file.
2. Enter the full number of the account that the receipts will go to in MS Money
3. Import the .OFX file into MS Money
4. Fix the duplicate charges
This does not in any way simplify my life. I've taken one step and turned it into 4, plus I have to scan each receipt which takes ~15 seconds. However, I do have copies of my receipts now, so I guess that's an advantage.
If I had known it would be this difficult, I probably would not have purchased this product.
My recommendation for the home user that uses MS Money: Wait for either an improved version or a Microsoft acquisition!

Mac scanner problems
Pros: Saves time and storage of credit card receipt paper files... allows easy monthly reconciling with accounting software.
Cons: It is very difficult to start receipt feed into Mac scanner regardless of receipt orientation or paper quality resulting in false scans that have to be deleted. Processing is very slow.

H/W: fine, Mac SW: non-intuitive and non-functional
Pros: Great form factor, clever concept, responsive technical service
Cons: After 9 software upgrades (Mac version now at 1.1.4) I still cannot get the hardware/software to OCR a receipt or store a scanned image to a destination I select.

great product to keep you organized, you will be a fan
Pros: I love the forced organization for tax returns. Simple to get started, you get used to its preferences. Makes it easy to pull up a copy of a receipt when you need it later, even a couple of years later. Can't live without it now
Cons: Slow to install, it is a memory hog for the backups. It could scan faster than it does currently
I also love being able to get copies of receipts when my wife asks for it. Once I got used to the preferences it became easy to use. Just a little slow to install, but that was only once. Their website helped me solve a problem I was having with a setting for auto back-up ( I now do manual backups each week as I use the program )
I would not want to be without the program again and have recommended it to several people.

A Business and Professional Career Must Have!!
Pros: Excellent product to allow for organized receipts for business expenses, taxes, misc, or whatever your needs if dealing with receipts is in your cards. Inexpensive and very easy to use.
Cons: Are there any? The product is customizable with respect to fields, report generation, etc. The product upgrades astutely adapts to accomodate user input and needs.

Software Quirky, Not Intuitive, Difficult to Update
Pros: Travel Size
Cons: See Summary and Opinion
Having tried to use it, and then trying to download the undate to 2.8.x (gave error msg and then said I had an older version installed (really?) so the update could not continue (but nowhere did it say to uninstall the older version) I gave up. Having experienced many problems (there are many more than I've listed) not to mention the wasted time, I would not have bought it.
The screens, in my opinion, are not intuitive. In these days of the rising Applehood and how easy they are to use (I have an iPhone), software should be "easy" and fool-proof. Since I'm goin' OS-X soon, I'll find another scanner that works both ways.

My experience with Neat Receipts
Pros: The concept is a good idea
Cons: Could not get product to work
1. Software didn't work after installation.
2. Went to website to see if new version existed. The download site was down.
3. Once I was finally able to download software from the site, it was difficult to install and get working. Even after I got it working, It was far from reliable.
4. After the software was finally working, I found that the scanner doesn't work at all.
Overall, it turned out to be a complete waste of time.

It scans perfectly; old and worn receipts become more legible.

Cons: Importing of documents to program. Difficulty identifying email client.

Not perfect, but does alleviate some labor
Pros: Interfaces with Quicken 2005 and later (with QIF!)
Cons: Scanalyze results need frequent checking, corrections
After getting it opened and set up, I learned that it uses QIF files to export to Quicken! I already knew that 2005 and later versions don't support this method to input data to checking and savings accounts. If I had seen that on the packaging, I wouldn't have bought this thing.
Good thing they didn't put it on the label, because if you follow the instructions from the Neat Receipts website, it does actually work. I just upgraded to Quicken 2008, but I decided to follow the instructions and give it a try.
In Quicken, export a QIF file containing only your account names. Import this QIF into Neat Receipts. Then, when you have some receipts to send to Quicken, export the selected receipts, then specify the account to import them to. Import the QIF file with Quicken, and it works! Quicken sends the transactions to the appropriate account; it look just like you've downloaded transactions from a website. Approve them (match them up if they need to be), and you're all set.
This has significantly reduced the time I spend handling receipts. Yes, about 1/3 to 1/2 of the receipts get entered in incorrectly, but rest usually work pretty well, and it gives me a single bucket (folder) to put them in. I can then sort by the credit card account, date, vendor, etc.
When I get a transaction that doesn't match up with the my monthly statement, I don't have to root through the box to find the paper receipt, I can quickly locate the scanned image in Neat Receipts and determine what the problem is.
It would be nicer if it had better recognition, but I'm very happy with the product.

phenomenally unsuitable (to purpose) product
Pros: nice appearance
Cons: almost completely unsuited to purpose
2. the machine is painfully slow, as (for example with business cards), it doesn't just scan it performs "intelligent analysis" of some sort, which generally is not worth the time it takes, if you are trying to feed it anything but standard U.S. business cards.
in short, it's pretty, and it's useless, b/c you will spend three times the time trying to convince it to "see" a receipt as you would if you just got a flatbed.
so, i regifted mine (serial no: s/n: 574F79020461) to a friend (with an explicit warning) and got a flatbed scanner for 40% of the price and never looked back.
please, before you buy this product, try it out. i really can't remember being this disappointed in any piece of office equipment. incidentally, it takes MySQL, where every "less intelligent" scanner seems to do fine.
for a few bells and whistles, which are largely pointless, i think it raised my blood pressure by 10 points.

Cool product but disappointed with support
Pros: Decent image quality, makes organizing expenses easy, Powered by USB
Cons: Disappointing software support, buggy when importing TIFF's
However, their software support policy leaves something to be desired. Out of the box, I found that the included software was an older version and the new version included features I was looking for. But to get the latest features, I'd have to pay an additional $40.
I would recommend the product, but check the software version and make sure you're getting the most recent version, or plan on some sticker shock.

Do not waste your money
Pros: Reads the receipts well
Cons: Software too complicated, quirky, overpriced
out of 54 user reviews
Good but a bit limited
Pros: Easy to take along, decent scanner
Cons: Can't change database directory
The only thing I don't like is that the database is in a fixed subdirectory. My laptop doesn't have a huge hard drive and I'd like to have an archive of documents on my home network. The underlying software is Microsoft SQL Server so it shouldn't be too hard to add the ability to save to a different D.B.

A little upset with the scanner
Pros: Scans fast
Cons: Scans image with a dark 'shadow' besides image
I called tech support they asked me to upgrade the software - which I did. Did not make any difference. They asked me to clean the scanner - I did. No difference. They even mailed me a kit to clean the scanner - It made no difference. You will have to learn to live with this problem.
Another problem is - when a crumpled receipt gets jammed in the scanner - you cannot hit escape or anything to stop the scanner. This can take upto few minutes before the scanner shows the scanned 'garbled' image of the messed up receipt.

Wait for Vista support before buying
Pros: Easy to use, well organized, great for tax prep
Cons: Not vista ready still; Does not support Office 2007
The company is suppose have an update sometime soon but they are also producing a new version of the software witch they will charge for for anyone who owns one at the same time. I am disappointed that NeatReceipts choose to alienate Vista and Office 2007 users for so long and then think those same users would spring for software that should have been include with the purchase. While we happy with what we have I am technically savvy enough to have gotten it to work, I would not recommend anyone buy this until they get their software up to speed. They have been promising Vista support since March and it is now the end of September and still they keep moving the date of release

VERY POOR!! HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED!!
Pros: NOTHING positive
Cons: NO WHERE IN THE PACKAGING TELLS YOU WHAT O.S. REQUIRED. It will install on x64 bit but will not work, and their is no way to uninstall. I even download the most recent update version 2.5.7!

Very quarky Software, Not for advanced users
Pros: Slick design, Fast Scanning, full size scanning.
Cons: OCR Software Bad, Slow software (buggy Freezes), more.....
At first I thought it seemed like a logical solution. As i began to scan in reciepts I ran into these issues.
1.) Software memory hungry. Exteremly Slow
2.) OCR Software sub-par. Does not recognize the text well.
3.) Picture editing after scanning sub-par
4.) "CANNOT SAVE TO SERVER DIRECTLY" I was disappointed that i needed to have SQL installed locally when I have an SQL server. I know it can backup but i don't want the database on my PC. Not Enterprise friendly.
5.) Application freezes, lost work more then a few times. Waisted a ton of time. How is there no crash recovery. I though they said there was no reason to have a save button since its a DB. Someone dropped the ball in the programming. It should of saved up until the crash.
Overall i give only a plus to the Scanner itself. Other than that I think that its back to the drawing board with the software. And Back to my boxes goes my receipts.

Teething problems with software
Pros: Compact Size, Concept,PDF Export
Cons: Software, Price
I am waiting on version 2.5 in the hopes it eliminates some of the warts of the current release. It would seem a shame that this scanner is probably more than capable of scanning a multitude of things, but it only does text. Photos? Fuggetaboutit! Photo's are completely unintelligible. I blame this again on the software as I suspect the scanner itself is fine.
I'm rating it a six only because I am trying to be optomistic that they will at some point get the software right. Also at $200 you are paying for the software, as the device is hardly worth it. Scanners have gotten very inexpensive.

Down and dirty receipt managment
Pros: Simple and direct receipt managment
Cons: Somewhat slow
NeatReceipts, being purpose driven has changed the way I now track expenses. It has significantly reduced the amount of typing I have to do. Another important feature is that it stores the image and the detail of the receipts together. This is a handy feature.
The only complaint I have is the slowness of the scanner. The specs say it can do three full size pages a minute. I wish it were faster. The flip side of the scanner is that it is highly portable and doesn’t occupy much desk space.
This is a good product.

First Look at NeatReceipts PRO version
Pros: Improved OCR and does Business Cards too!
Cons: OCR stil isnt "perfect"
On a product that was already very useful. PRO version captures perfect images of receipts first time, everytime (no more fiddling with contract adjustemts, MUCH easier than trying to photocopy faded, creased receipts). New Business card scanning capability is even more accurate and is at least as good as the existing products such as Cardscan.

Its the neatest way to save receipts/docs
Pros: User friendly, scanner is multipurpose, Making reports is so easy
Cons: Slightly Expensive, Cannot add own columns, Doesnt read faded receipts
The software works like my own little system with all my paperwork in it. Looking for receipts and documents is just like "click here...click there"
The scanner is nice. The image quaality of receipts seen on the screen is far better than you would expect from a normal scanner. Also the scanner is portable and feels sturdy when you hold it. The scanner works great with all other applpications as well.
User has to use only the columns that exist in the software. I use columns like 'project ID' and transaction ID to tag the receipts. It does not read anything from the faded receipts. Although one can just enter the information manually.
I bought it for 200 bucks, I still think thats expensive, but I knew I was losing atleast 100 bucks of reimbursable receipts every month. SO this works out way cheaper for me

NeatReceipts Founder Responds
Pros: Lots of uses and functionality, helps you get organized, saves you time, IRS accepted, reads data from receipts, free upgrades, free customer support
Cons: Not 100% when reading data, No Mac, Does not recognize hand written receipts
My name is Rafi Spero and I am the founder of NeatReceipts. I wanted to take a moment to address some of the issues raised in this forum.
1. We take customer support very seriously at NeatReceipts. We provide free technical support (phone or email), pay for shipping on returns and provide free updates and upgrades. We have always honored our 30 day money back guarantee.
2. I am not familiar with the problem of slick receipts. We switched scanners back in February which utilizes a different tracking system that pulls in documents when you scan. I personally tested the mechanism and can assure you that it works very well.
3. Our price on our website is 229.95. You can purchase at a number of different web store fronts for 199.95 including: TigerDirect, CDW, TechDepot, Softmart, MobilePlanet, eCost, PC Mall and others.
4. Our software file is proprietary yet we work quite well with Quicken, Quickbooks, MS Money, PDF, Excel, Word, HTML and CSV. We currently support these applications for 2004. When we release our 2005 version (which all current users get a free upgrade to) we will support all applications listed above for 2005.
Again, we take our customers seriously and value their input and any issues they encounter. Feel free to email me directly at rspero@neatreceipts.com
Sincerely,

Responding to Jabre's comment
Pros: Sounds like a real timesaver
Cons: Not worth the risk based on the scanner problems and refund issues
After reading Jabre's comments, I decided to abandon the idea of buying this product and look no further...most of the receipts I get are the "slick" style and since this scanner does not have an adjustable guide to prevent sliding around, it is just not worth the hassle.
What really bothered me is Neat receipts' claim that they offer a no-hassle refund. A lot of companies make this claim but in the end can't live up to it.
If you do buy this, buy it from a reputable vendor such as Staples.

Cons: Doesn't read hand written receipts

Moderate software, poor hardware, overpriced
Pros: OCR for receipt management
Cons: Receipts slip while scanning, proprietary file format
Hardware: Full page sheets feed through moderately well. But, slick receipts, which are what the product was intended for, slide around and scan very poorly.
Software: OK if you are willing to work exclusively within their software. But, the image format is proprietary. The export function is cumbersome. Interfacing to other software packages is not as automated as it should be and they do not even support Quicken 2005.
Support: Be very cautious. They promise a money back gaurantee. I put them to the test and found they failed. The did not honor the gaurantee and left me to pay for the return and dispute the charge on the credit card.
Mediocre software, poor hardware, non-trustworthy customer support.
update 111
Clarification on customer support:
Neatreceipts did not provide the return shipping as represented in their warranty. I received credit for purchse 3 weeks after they received the return.
